Most woodpeckers have a bit of an edge. They're beautiful and I have never seen one act aggressively, but they have that look in their eyes like if you bother them they just might 'mistake' your head for a lump of wood. But this little Coppersmith Barbet is nothing but sweetness and light.

Iโ€™m convinced this emu was mid-sentence.

Curious eyes, open beak, full personality. Australiaโ€™s wildlife always delivers.

This is the prettiest fox that I've ever seen. I saw it by the side of the road at dusk in Prince Edward Island National Park. I actually saw 99% of all the foxes I've ever seen there. I don't see too many of them around where I live in Southwestern Ontario but I know they do exist here. I've photographed one in the middle of winter.

Another recent bit of wildlife: a European Mouflon from the Lainzer Tiergarten in #Wien!

Unlike the true mouflon, which is the wild precursor to domestic sheep, the European Mouflon is a subspecies of domestic sheep: but it's a subspecies that went feral in Corsica & Sardinia thousands of years ago, a sort of snapshot of early domestic sheep that went down a wilder path. 1/2

This is an alleged Common Iora. I only saw one the entire time I was in Sri Lanka and there were only about three or four minutes of any given day when I didn't have my binoculars to my eyes, so not so common as the name would have you believe.

Some photos of Purple Pipers at Jones Beach, NY, last Saturday (Feb. 28).

Unusually there were dozens if not more of these shorebirds present, and not only on their favored rocky habitats, but running around on the beach in multitudes with Sanderlings and Dunlins. I suspect the intense cold and snow storms we've had over the past two months affected their food supply on the jetties, leading them to forage with their cousins. These birds nest in the Arctic tundra and overwinter in our middle latitudes. In a sense, by favoring the expansion of the polar vortex, climate change was bringing the Arctic conditions they migrate away from right to them.

Tigress F2 goes for a swim. Itโ€™s always a lovely sight to see a tiger in the wild, swimming. In Gothangaon, Umred Karhandla, after the morning tussle with her son (see my earlier post for the video), we encountered the majestic F2 again in the evening, taking a dip in the lake just as the sun was setting. She looked at us curiously and waded out of the water. But the light had dimmed and we had to say goodbye.

Guardian of the jungle in full glory ๐Ÿฆœ
Colors so intense it feels like a rainbow was poured into the heart of the rainforest. In the silence between the leaves, you can hear only the rustle of wings and the breath of nature. Moments like this remind us that the world can still amaze without filters.
