Heute mal wieder ein Höckerschwan. Natürlich am Morgen bei Sonnenaufgang mit etwas Nebel über dem See. Praktischerweise war der Schwan dabei sehr kooperativ und hatte sich kurz vorher der Gefiederpflege gewidmet.

Another afternoon in Central Park in NYC, before the weather turns cold again. Two views of a downy woodpecker—in the first, you can see its tongue if you look carefully; in the second, it's scored some food. Then there’s a ruby-crowned kinglet, which really shouldn't be here in January (though they're not unknown). Finally, a huddled great blue heron, either ignoring or proving the sign saying “Please Do Not Enter—Wildlife Sensitive Area”.

A male Northern flickers lunges at a starling who has landed on the suet feeder where he is feeding. With the flicker's long, sharp beak inches away from it, the starling raises its wings in alarm.
This photo was taken shortly after the previous photo. The starling backpedals with its wings, escaping the wrath of the flicker... this time.

This is a Barbi-bird--a small male purple finch--who looks as if he has been dipped in pink ink. He has brownish wings, but instead of white wingbars, eyebrows and chest, he has pink.

Went snowshoeing today on that fresh layer of snow that fell overnight. Taught a six-year-old family member how to snowshoe. Just before we headed out, this fine four-legged creature posed outside our window. Saw lots of small hoof prints in the snow (upper left pic)— deer or elk? Having a blast!! 😀⛰️❄️
