Here is another interesting small feature of the tall frozen #waterfall (85'; 26m) shown at the beginning of this thread. I carefully walked up the partially frozen stream to capture this #closeup at the base of the waterfall. Icicles with an inverted shape (I believe called "ice bells") hang inside an #ice cave and water seen flowing below. #Vermont #mountains #winter

This innocent looking trail I hiked last week leads to a steep class-II descent down the wall of a gorge. Reward-- a beautiful frozen #waterfall! June 29, 1983, 43 years ago today: After a seven-mile morning, I followed the half-mile side trail from the AT to Wiggins Spring Shelter. I had been told that the water from this spring was worth the trip in itself, and, anyway, a backpacker needs a place at which to lay back with his boots off at some point during the course of a twenty-two-mile day.

The Windchimes, granite tors near Mt. Prindle in the White Mountains National Recreation Area, early June, still plenty of snow on the ground. These formations are remnants of granite intrusions exposed by millions of years of frost shattering and erosion of the surrounding rock.

May 6, 1983: My camera received heavy use this morning, as I traversed another group of scenic ridges with equally picturesque names. The six miles of trail between Neels Gap and Tesnatee Gap featured a long uphill climb similar to yesterday’s and some steep downhills, but most of the trail was nicely graded.

September 8, 1983: It was mostly cloudy in Crawford Notch at 12:30 when I set out on the #AppalachianTrail. A nice, stiff breeze was blowing, the air was fresh and dry, and the day was much cooler than the last few had been. As usual, that 12:30 start was considerably later than I wanted it to be.

June 29, 1983: The remainder of the trail was densely wooded, generally lacking in viewpoints. That was of little consequence today. The cold rain intensified and lingered into the night. Rain makes for a much more introverted hiking experience than on a clear day. Far-off vistas disappear and distant colors are muted into shades of gray.

May 18, 1983: Derrick Knob shelter was in an excellent spot, similar in appearance to Russell Field. About a dozen small deer were wandering around nibbling the grass and the lower leaves, and they let me approach surprisingly close. It is pretty amazing how brave the deer are in the national parks, where no hunting is allowed.

June 14, 1983: Another steamy day began with seven miles of trudging up and down short, steep climbs, occasionally crossing hollows with sluggish brown creeks. Then I had a long, steep climb up to and along Chestnut Ridge to Chestnut Knob. Both were attractive. An extensive swath of grassy, flowering meadow ran along the ridge crest up to and past the knob.

August 22, 1983: About halfway through the hike, high up on the slope of Glastenbury Mountain, I arrived at Glastenbury Mountain Shelter. A heavy downpour had just concluded, and the sky was brightening considerably as the rain tapered off into a fine mist. July 4, 1983: The first half-mile from the hut this morning climbed along the crest of the ridge forming the western rim of the ravine. This led to an interesting summit called Blackrock. It rose above the wooded ridge crest, a huge, barren mound of gray boulders smeared liberally with streaks of green paint.

The AT reached the ridgeline of the mountain and traversed a series of rocky knobs, several of which had open ledges. The sun had finally broken through, and the day had turned clear and beautiful. August 18, 1983: The highlight of my day occurred when I brilliantly attempted to cross a bog bridge at full speed in the rain. Bog bridges are wooden walkways built across muddy areas to prevent heavy hiker traffic from tearing up fragile wetlands. This one was constructed of split tree trunks with the flat side up.

From the pass it was an easy ascent to Laguna Pollone. This is a special place. We sat down, ate some energy bars and just gazed at that awesome, dramatic scene. The reflections of the mountains echoed in the waters of the lake, which still had some morning ice drifting across. All was still. No wind. Such a tranquil moment for us both.

I got a chance to do a s24o with the Zpack Pivot Solo tent. It's really roomy inside. It wasn't hard to set up, but I had to fuss around to get a perfect pitch that made the bathtub floors work right. I assume I'll get faster the more I use it. As I expected, it had condensation on the walls (I was camped next to a lake on a moist night), but with the screen on the foot side, my sleeping bag's foot didn't get wet like in other shelters like this.

“Afternoon Light” — Storms build as late afternoon light shines on a Sierra ridge, across the water from a rocky bluff and a patch of snow.

In the backcountry I usually spend the first and last few hours of the day photographing. In the morning I’m up before sunrise and not back in camp for hours. I head out again hours before sunset and usually keep at it until it is nearly dark. Dropping down into the hugely impressive amphitheater of the Corral del Veleta yesterday. I never fail to be impressed by the scale of these huge rock walls.

The Coral de Veleta was the site of the last glacier in Spain's Sierra Nevada range. In fact technically it is still a glacier, a "rock glacier" meaning permafrost lies below the surface.

Worth a visit!
