Climber of the Quiet Tree

This image of a male red‑bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is from my backyard. I’m curious about the feathers on its throat—they’re so bright and white that they almost blend into the fence behind it. It’s probably just the lighting; the sky was overcast, and sometimes I really have to crank up the ISO. Still, I like the effect. It’s not perfect, but it’s visually striking.

Squarespace SEO experiments are off to a decent start 📈

In under 24 hours, my article on Squarespace Vs WordPress for Photographers is on page one of Google with a mention in the AI overview, too 🙌🏻

This is without any SEO plugin (they have one called SEO Space, which is like Yoast). Just using the basic tools that are already built in.

No focus keywords, naturally written, no affiliate links or CTA's, etc.

Designed by Otto Wagner in 1898, this elevator is a hallmark of the Vienna Secession movement. It blends industrial ironwork with delicate Art Nouveau motifs, transforming a functional machine into a centerpiece of urban architecture. His work captures the exact moment Vienna transitioned from imperial tradition into modern, geometric elegance.

Egret in the Shallows

I captured this image of a snowy egret (Egretta thula) one morning in Gulfport, Mississippi. The egret was hunting in a shallow tidal pool near the surf.

Loropetalum Blooms

This is a photo of some Chinese fringe flowers (Loropetalum chinense). The blooms are a vivid pink, each made of many long, narrow petals. It’s somewhere in my backyard, though I honestly don’t remember taking the picture — probably along the back fence.

Keep in mind that the primary purpose of the description is to paint a vivid picture of the image using words for people who cannot see. Recommend 10 short titles of the image.

Ok folks, I need some advice from the “veterans” of the platform: I can’t seem to find those many #portrait photographers. That’s what I primarily do so that’s what I’m mainly interested in. Any suggestions? How to find them? Anyone you personally know to recommend? I’d like to switch my focus here and need to understand the logics.
Thanks guys!

Back‑Wing Scratch

This isn’t the image I intended to post today. I was planning to share a photo of a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum), just not this one. I accidentally grabbed it and moved it into my working directory, then figured, what the hay — so here we are.

Robins Rest

Here is a photo of an American Robin (Turdus migratorius). It occurred to me that I’d never photographed one on a sunny day. They’re year‑round residents here, but I mostly only see them around this time of year. I took this photo in the spring of 2023.

“Four Desert Star Flowers” — Four tiny desert star (monoptilon bellioides) flowers, Death Valley.

The desert star flower has become a bit of a… star here at the blog recently. It is one of the small flowers that you might easily overlook in Death Valley, but once you spot them they are abundant, poking up just above the ground, often in small groups. They are pretty flowers, but you have to get down close to the ground to appreciate them…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/04/04/fo…
