Bei der Anreise ins Zielgebiet hat das Auto gestern Geräusche wie ein Düsenjet gemacht, die Sicht im Regen war oft ziemlich bescheiden und die Autobahn voll. Obwohl ich gut angekommen bin, hoffe ich, daß es heute etwas entspannter läuft.

The happiness of seeing the first bluethroat of this year is overshadowed by the news the Spectacled Eider of Texel died this morning.

Ecomare on Instagram: “The bird was brought to Ecomare in a weakened state at the end of December. Despite intensive care and treatment, the spectacled eagle continued to suffer from health problems.
In the week leading up to its death, a
worm infection flared up again. On Thursday, the bird stopped eating and its condition deteriorated visibly over the last few days. The exact cause of death is not yet known.”

I’m grateful that I was able to see the bird on Christmas Day.

If you like birds, particularly the vulture kind, you will enjoy this live webcam from a Bearded vulture (known also as a Lammergeier) nest. The chick is a couple of weeks old now, I first started when there was just an egg being incubated by the parents. I check in a few times a day. Fascinating stuff.

A few more birds during a gorgeous day at the Marine Nature Study Area, on March 10, but very quiet. As though the marsh residents had been shell-shocked by this winter's intense cold and major snow cover. Winter Ducks are moving out, and soon spring migrants will arrive. A day later, Ospreys arrived.

We had some time on beautiful Stewart Island, Rakiura, earlier this week. The Oban harbour at Halfmoon Bay hosts a number of seabirds, including albatrosses, muttonbirds (Shearwaters), and terns.

I managed to get some shots of this albatross (White-capped, I think) as it ran along the water as part of its take-off.
