Ein Guirakuckuck (Guira guira) sitzt in der Gabelung eines kahlen, fast senkrecht stehenden Astes. Der Betrachter sieht ihn im Profil. Der Guirakuckuck erreicht eine Körperlänge zwischen 36 und 42 Zentimeter, davon entfallen durchschnittlich 20 Zentimeter auf den Schwanz. Die Flügel sind kurz und abgerundet. Die Körperoberseite ist dunkelbraun mit einer weißen Strichelung, die Köderunterseite ist weißlich beige und weist an Kehle und Brust eine sehr feine schwarze Strichelung auf. Die ockerfarbene Federhaube ist schütter, das ungefiederte Gesicht ist blaß gelb bis blaß grünlich. Der Schnabel ist normalerweise gelb, kann aber bei einzelnen Individuen auch einen orangen oder lachsfarbenen Ton haben. Die Iris ist bei adulten Vögeln gewöhnlich gelb oder gelblich-weiß, einzelne Individuen haben jedoch auch orangefarbene Iris.

Ein Mangrovereiher (Butorides striata) läuft einen kahlen Ast hinunter. Der Betrachter sieht ihn im Profil. Der Mangrovereiher ist ein kleiner Reiher mit einer Länge von 35 bis 48 cm und kurzem Hals. Die Flügelspannweite beträgt 52 bis 60 Zentimeter. Das Gefieder ist grau-grün, auf der Bauchseite heller und beinhaltet eine schwarze Kappe mit langem schwarzen Kamm. Der Schnabel ist schwarz, die Beine sind blaßgelb bis orange.

It didn’t make a sound, I only spotted it as the reeds started moving several feet in front of the platform. We’d only stopped for a few minutes break on the bench.

Rust-Crowned Sentinel

Every time I spot a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina), its subtle earth-toned plumage and rust-colored cap remind me of military camouflage—giving these little birds an unexpectedly rugged appearance. During the winter and early spring, they seemed to be everywhere, their numbers in the hundreds. Now, only a handful remain, occasionally seen foraging on the ground. I read that their diet shifts with the seasons, transitioning from seeds in the colder months to insects in the warmth of spring and summer.
