The difference between grebe species (to the human eye) is just the height of its black mask. I think this one - with its eye just inside the mask - is a Western grebe. The bird in this photo is serenely gliding toward the left in pink-streaked blue water.

Medium-sized sparrow with distinctive rufous grey and white coloration. The wings are dominantly rufous, the head is grey, and the underpants are white and rufous striped. Fox Sparrows tend to stay low in the undergrowth, foraging for food, but occasionally pop up for a conversation.

Zwei Kohlmeisen (Parus major) turnen durch das kahle Geäst eines Apfelbaums. Die Kohlmeise hat einen kurzen schwarzen Schnabel. Die Federn am Kopf sind schwarz und an den Wangen und Ohrdecken weiß. Der Rücken erscheint grünlich, Brust und Bauch gelb. Der untere Rücken, die Flügeldecken und der Schwanz sind blaugrau. In der Mitte der Unterseite des Rumpfes befindet sich ein schwarzer Längsstrich.

Ein Rotkehlchen (Erithacus rubecula) steht inmitten von grau-gelben Laub auf einer Rasenfläche und ist im Profil zu sehen. Die orangerote Färbung reicht von Vorderstirn und Kehle bis zur Vorderbrust und umfasst auch die Kopf- und Halsseiten, am ausgeprägtesten zeigt sich der Fleck auf der Brust. An der Stirn ist die Orangefärbung weniger deutlich und aschgrau gesäumt. Die Oberseite ist olivbraun, im Frühjahr jedoch durch Abnutzung der äußeren Federsäume gräulich gefärbt. Die weiße Unterseite wird von den hellolivbraunen Körperseiten eingefasst. Während die Oberschwanzdecken eine gelbbraune Färbung haben, sind die Unterschwanzdecken rahmfarben. Die Steuerfedern sind dunkelbraun mit gelbgrauem Außenfahnensaum. Hand- und Armdecken sind groß mit rostbraunen Spitzen. Die Unterflügeldecken sind gräulichweiß bis hellbraun gefärbt. Bei etwa der Hälfte der Altvögel tragen die zentralen großen Armdecken auf der Außenfahne einen kleinen gelben Spitzenfleck, der sich auf die Aufhellung der Schaftspitze beschränken kann.

Eine Lachmöwe (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) steht auf einem Geländer. Sie ist im Profil zu sehen. Der Hintergrund erscheint diffus grau. Der Vogel hat einen roten Schnabel mit schwarzer Spitze. Die Beine sind ebenfalls rot. Der Rücken, die oberen und unteren Flügeldecken sowie die Oberseite der Arm- und der inneren Handschwingen sind hellgrau; der übrige Rumpf und der Schwanz sind weiß. Die äußeren Handschwingen sind überwiegend weiß, sie zeigen eine schwarze Endbinde sowie schmale schwarze Ränder an der Innenseite der Innenfahne. Nur die äußerste Handschwinge ist auch auf der Außenkante der Außenfahne schmal schwarz gerandet. Die Iris ist dunkelbraun. Die Augenregion und der Ohrbereich sind diffus schwärzlich gefärbt.

Birds in a Winter Forest is a handmade paper collage by artist Karen Kaspar. In a snowy winter landscape in soft blue tones, three bright red birds sit on bare branches of tall, slender tree trunks that stand out in dark brown against the light winter background. Large white snowflakes are falling. The tree trunks and branches were painted on paper with acrylic paint and then mounted as a collage on the watercolor background and combined with the watercolor birds. The winter picture is minimalist and conveys a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Eine Großschnabel-Seeschwalbe (Phaetusa simplex) steht an einer lehmigen Uferböschung und schaut geradeaus. Sie ist im Profil zu sehen. Die Großschnabel-Seeschwalbe erreicht bei einem Körpergewicht von 208 bis 247 Gramm eine Körperlänge von etwa 38 bis 42 Zentimetern. Sie ist eine große Seeschwalbe mit relativ kurzem Schwanz und sehr großem gelbem Schnabel und auffälliger Flügelzeichnung. Der Oberkopf bis zu den Ohrdecken ist schwarz. Die Oberseite ist mittelgrau und dunkler als bei den meisten anderen Seeschwalben. Die Zügel, die Unterseite und die größeren Flügeldecken sind weiß. Die Flanken sind grau getönt. Die Iris ist schwarzbraun; die Beine und die Füße gelb. Im Flug zeigt sich ein auffälliges Muster mit schwarzen Handschwingen, grauem Rücken und dreieckigen weißen Flecken auf den Handschwingen und -decken.
