Today's small friends are this female house finch checking out the newly cleaned and refilled hummingbird feeder, and the blue jay on the suet feeder in the background absolutely horfing a chunk of suet. 😂

Sometimes a little bird will land on a branch close to you and give you enough time to set your camera for a few good photos. The encounter will be short but nice. Then you'll spend a very very long time in bird books and reliable websites to try to identify the little bugger, I mean the little bird.

This is a Hammond's flycatcher (Empidonax hammondii) photographed last week while tracking cougars.

Bird Bath 🛁 for #birbsday

While at my friend's we had a huge thunderstorm. So afterwards, we went outside to assess the damage and we found this little Eurasian Jay sitting on the fence, sheltering under a tree. We checked him out and he seemed okay. A little while later when the rain had stopped and he got dry, he flew home. ♥️✨

Exil.
Mein Abendprogramm im Hotel besteht in dieser Woche darin, zwei jungen Störchen bei ihren ersten Flugübungen zuzusehen. Wenn auch aus ziemlicher Entfernung.
Gestern kam mir einer von beiden im Tiefflug entgegen, als ich nach dem Arbeitstag ins Hotel zurückkehrte. Er hat wohl nur eine Platzrunde gedreht, denn inzwischen steht er wieder im Horst.

While exploring the tropical wilds of Key West, FL I stumbled across this primeval creature which seemed to be guarding the Hilton Garden Inn parking lot. We warily kept eye contact and parted in peace.

Green Heron last Friday at the Marine Nature Study Area, NY. The second photo shows a behavior I've seen on this species quite a few times. That protruding tongue gives them an impudent look and adds to their charm. I did a lit search, which suggested thermoregulation. While there was no direct evidence, sources did note that “Open-bill panting and gular fluttering increase evaporative cooling by exposing moist membranes of the mouth and throat.” I've seen the "gular fluttering" in other herons, but not this.

I've waited years to get a close view of a Bearded vulture (Lammergeier), to be able to see it's eye. I got one chance only on our recent trip to the Pyrenees. It was a very cool moment, we were sat resting, I happened to turn around and saw this immense bird coming our way, I quietly said to @elperronegro turn around look what's coming our way.
