Ein Stieglitz (Carduelis carduelis) oder auch Distelfink sitzt im kahlen Geäst eines mit Flechten bewachsenen Obstbaums. Der Stieglitz ist von schlanker Gestalt mit kurzem Hals und dünnen Füßen. Kennzeichnend sind eine kräftig schwarz-rote Gesichtsmaske, ein weißer Kopf mit weißen Halsseiten und abgesetzt ein schwarzer Nacken und Oberkopf. Die Flügel weisen eine deutlich abgesetzte, breite, leuchtend gelbe Binde auf. Sie sind bei der Nominatform überwiegend schwarz. Der Rücken ist hellbraun, der Bürzel weiß. Der am Ende schwach gegabelte Schwanz ist schwarz mit weißen Flecken im Spitzendrittel. Die Unterseite ist bräunlich an Brust und Flanken. Der elfenbeinfarbene Schnabel ist lang und spitz. In der Brutzeit ist er reinweiß, ansonsten befindet sich eine schwarze Markierung an der Spitze. Stieglitze haben eine Körperlänge von etwa 12 bis 13 Zentimetern.

You can tell this photo was taken in winter, when many of the branches of the bushes on the prairie near our house are mostly bare. A male hummingbird - we can tell it's male because the top of the very brilliant read head of the bird is aiming right toward us - is flying above a tangle of very bare branches. In the background are the fuzzy upstretching needled branches of a pine tree.

Another difficult warbler, then two favorites before finishing this Family - at least the ones I seen and been able to photography.

This is an Orange-crowned Warbler, likely an immature bird based on the amount of gray. These are variable distance migrators depending on sub-species, overwintering in southern areas, Mexico and portions of Central
America. The Nest in Canada, Alaska and the Northwest. They will show the orange crest if agitated, but typically not. ID is tough without a song.

Ein Bluthänfling (Linaria cannabina) steht auf einem Rotbuchen-Zweig, recht den Hals etwas vor und hat den Schnabel leicht geöffnet. Der Vogel hat einen grauen Kopf und eine leuchtend karminrote Stirn und Brust. Die weißliche Kehle zeigt braune Streifen. Der Rücken ist rotbraun. Eine Wacholderdrossel (Turdus pilaris) steht auf einem schräg gewachsenen kahlen Zweig mit dicken Knospen. Der Schwanz ist halb aufgerichtet. Der Betrachter sieht den Vogel von schräg hinten. Der obere Rücken, die Schulterfedern und die Oberflügeldecken sind rötlich braun; Kopf, hinterer und seitlicher Hals sowie hinterer und unterer Rücken sind hellgrau. Der Kopf zeigt einen deutlichen weißlichen Überaugenstreif. Kehle, Vorderhals und obere Brust sind auf ockergelbem Grund schwärzlich gestrichelt, die Flanken zeigen auf meist etwas blasser rötlich beigem Grund dunkle, pfeilspitzenähnliche Flecken. Die übrige Unterseite des Rumpfes, die Unterschwanzdecken sowie die Unterflügeldecken sind weiß. Die Schwingen sind dunkel graubraun und schmal hell gerandet. Der Schwanz ist schwarzgrau.

Eine Saatkrähe (Corvus frugilegus) sitzt auf einem fast senkrecht gewachsenen Zweig. Sie wendet dem Betrachter das Hinterteil zu. Der Vogel hat den Kopf so weit nach links gedreht, daß dieser im Profil zu sehen ist. Die Flügelspannweite liegt bei 98 Zentimetern. Das Gefieder der kräftigen, etwa 46 Zentimeter großen Saatkrähe ist einheitlich schwarz, mit leicht rötlichem Glanz. Je nach Lichteinfall schillern Scheitel und Nacken grünlich- oder violett-metallisch. Der Schnabelgrund der Altvögel ist nackt und grindig-weißlich. Der Schnabel ist spitz, der Oberschnabel vorn weniger nach unten gebogen und schlanker als jener der Aaskrähe. Unterhalb des Schnabels befindet sich wie bei der Rabenkrähe der Kehlsack, der zum Transport von Nahrung benutzt wird.

Today's small friend is this painted bunting, who should be vacationing in Florida, Cuba, or Mexico at this time of year. Instead, he decided to fly a thousand miles north to snowy Pittsburgh and hang out here for a month during the coldest part of our winter. 😅

I spent over 7 hours staking out a very kind stranger's house for a chance to see this bird and it was absolutely 1000% worth it. This is a new life-lister for me!

Der Truthahngeier erreicht eine Körpergröße von 63,5 bis 76 Zentimetern und wird etwa 850 bis 2000 Gramm schwer. Die Flügellänge beträgt 46 bis 55 Zentimeter und die Flügelspannweite 1,80 bis 2 Meter. Der Schwanz ist 22 bis 29 Zentimeter lang. Seine Gestalt ist schlank.
