Among the Branches

I saw this northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) one day, flittering through the branches of our crepe myrtle trees. Their silhouette is easy to pick out from a distance — the long tail helps, and they’re noticeably larger than the finches and sparrows. My wife used to hear them pecking at the window in the mornings and thought they were reminding us to put bird seed out.

Male Long-Tailed Duck in perfect pose to show off those fantastic tail feathers. During my visit to Homer, Alaska, these ducks were occasionally just off-shore of the spit, but far enough away that they were still small even with my longest lens. For a few minutes, a few of them were close enough that I could capture them for a moment between long, frequent dives. Only the males have the fancy long tail feathers.

Another difficult warbler, then two favorites before finishing this Family - at least the ones I seen and been able to photography.

This is an Orange-crowned Warbler, likely an immature bird based on the amount of gray. These are variable distance migrators depending on sub-species, overwintering in southern areas, Mexico and portions of Central
America. The Nest in Canada, Alaska and the Northwest. They will show the orange crest if agitated, but typically not. ID is tough without a song.

Eine Ringeltaube auf dem Dach des Gartenhäuschens, direkt oberhalb des Futterhauses. Wir sehen sie von Vorne. Fragend reckt sie das Köpfchen und hält es leicht schief.
Der Partner/die Partnerin gesellt sich hinzu und läuft hinter Taube Nr. 1 her. Taube Nr. 1 dreht sich nun nach links weg, wodurch die Spitze ihres Schnabels aus dem Bild verschwindet. Taube Nr. 2 ist von links zu sehen.

Männlicher Grünspecht auf der nun plötzlich wieder grünen Wiese. Wir sehen in von der Rückseite, den Kopf zur rechten Seite und nach oben gerichtet. Es liegt immer etwas Strenges in seinem Blick. Der kräftige Schnabel ist mit Gartenerde bedeckt, denn er ist ein ungeheuer fleißiger "Gärtner".

Little Tern Flyby

Lapwing Acrobatics
Watching lapwings during their mating dance is incredible. They are extremly manoeuvrable and doing 90 degree turns at full speed. Tracking them in Flight is a true sport.

This is a female Red-shafted Northern Flicker. Flickers are much easier to spot than most woodpeckers, but that doesn't mean they are any the less interesting. One of my goals for this year is to catch their mating dance when two males will engage in a dance off before a prospective mate.

Noch einmal der Grünspecht. Dieses Mal hoch aufgerichtet, man könnte denken, es sei ein farbiger Pinguin im Schnee. Wir sehen ihn wieder von links.
