Oriole in Amber

This Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) visited a few springs ago, part of a small group that lingered for a week or two. I set out orange halves to welcome them, and they took to the offering with enthusiasm. They were also drawn to the suet feeder, adding bright flashes of color and song to the yard during their brief stay.

Pelican Paradox

I spotted this brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) at Savannah Beach a few months back. It was quite distant, so I had to crop the image significantly during post-processing, which introduced a noticeable grain. The unusual—but not unwelcome—textures in the pelican’s plumage are the result of noise reduction and enhancement techniques applied to bring out detail and clarity.

Gull Over Gulfport

Here’s a ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) in flight over the ocean at Gulfport, Mississippi—wings outstretched, riding the coastal wind with quiet precision.

Deerling Moment

Yesterday, as Charlie and I stepped through the backyard gate to begin our walk, we came face-to-face with a young white-tailed deer. For five or six heartbeats, all three of us stood frozen—caught in a moment of mutual surprise, unsure who would move first.

I slowly raised my camera. It wasn’t even powered on yet, so I fumbled with it, knowing I had only seconds. Somehow, I managed to capture a single image before the deer turned and bounded back toward the forest.

Charlie gave brief chase but stopped when I called him back.

The morning was overcast, and the image came out grainy. But with a bit of post-processing, I was able to salvage a passable portrait of our unexpected visitor.

Weathered Witness

I’ve got a batch of overexposed Mississippi Kite images—Ictinia mississippiensis, if we’re being formal. I decided to see what I could salvage from one, aiming for a rustic feel. I think I’ve landed there. Birds of prey make it easy; they carry drama even when the lighting doesn’t.

Golden Gaze

Here’s an image of a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) perched on the roof of my old central bird feeder, gazing down toward the seed trough below—perhaps considering a seat at the table.

That feeder served faithfully for nearly twenty years. I kept patching it, season after season, coaxing a little more life from its weathered frame. Eventually, it gave out in a big way, and I replaced it a few months ago.

Great Egret in Black and White

This is a Great Egret (Ardea alba) captured in striking black and white. The color version of this photograph is equally captivating—the water reflects a kaleidoscope of vibrant hues. I may share that one another time. I took this image in Georgia a little over two years ago. What I love most is the way the water ripples outward in gentle circles from the bird, and how its partial reflection adds a delicate, almost poetic touch to the scene. In monochrome, it feels as if the egret is etched in silver—quiet, luminous, and timeless.

Please do not feed the Great Wheat Sharks

Shark fins poking out of fields of wheat

Sharks in wheat field along Highway 8 in Ontario, west of Dublin, have become a tradition.

Latest shark-artist is Anne Melady, an 75 and retired nurse and landowner. Anne thought she would have some fun by placing these “shark fins” in her wheat field west of Dublin, inspired by another shark installation last year. She calls them Great Wheat Sharks. All Melady wants is for those driving by the field to get a laugh amid the pandemic doom and gloom.

Fencepost Ritual

A pair of red-bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) raided my bird feeder simultaneously—a rare occurrence, as they typically visit at separate times. In the image, the male woodpecker stands on the left, clutching a peanut in his beak with what appears to be a triumphant upward tilt. I confirmed his sex from another photo showing his full red crown. On the right, the female continues her search, her posture focused and deliberate. Both birds show a clear preference for peanuts and almost always manage to find one among the mix of seeds.

Got Shrimp

Here’s a moment where a laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) swooped down and plucked a shrimp straight from the surf—mid-flight, mid-feast, mid-ceremony. And of course, a sanderling (Calidris alba) wandered into the frame, photobombing with perfect timing and coastal dignity.

I captured this scene on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi.

Procession at Sunset

This image of four ducks swimming into twilight caught my eye. Their near-black silhouettes glide through flickering ripples of orange and blue, where shadow and light dance across the water’s surface. It’s the contrast—the quiet procession against the shimmering backdrop—that holds the gaze.

Dunlin Drift

These are dunlins (Calidris alpina). I came upon a group hunkered down in the sand—most of them sleeping, tucked into the terrain like scattered leaves. When I got too close, they stirred and took flight.

I captured this photograph in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Woodland Bond

White-tailed deer pass through my yard nearly every evening. I rarely see them—just the tracks they leave behind, pressed into the soft earth like quiet signatures. But every now and then, they arrive in daylight.

This image of a doe and her fawn was captured through my office window—a fleeting moment of grace framed by glass and morning light.

Whispers in the Bramble

Owls can seem rather eerie, especially when lurking in the shadowed recesses of the forest. I imagine that sense of unease is even more pronounced for small animals. This barred owl (Strix varia) is no exception—tucked deep within a tangle of leaves and branches, it watches me with an unblinking gaze as I pass.
