July 17, 1983, 42 years ago today: Eventually, I had to return to the furnace and complete the roadwalk. I filled my canteen with cold water just before I left the restaurant. It was hot twenty minutes later. Two miles along, as I was crossing the bridge over Conodoguinet Creek, a car pulled up and a lady called out to me.

The valley is rather flat farm country, with several small villages, lots of farm fields and a few patches of forest. Long, low, flat-topped ridges rise along the far horizon. Die Wetterprognose hielt mich davon ab, eine Gipfeltour zu absolvieren. Vorbei an mehreren Bergseen habe ich den Mattmark-Stausee umrundet. Während es auf dem regulären Wanderweg nur so von anderen Leuten wimmelte, konnte ich die ungestörte Ruhe ein paar hundert Meter weiter oben auf dem alpinen Wanderweg geniessen. Auch auf dem Rückweg auf der anderen Seite des Sees war ich fast für mich alleine.

The weather forecast prevented me from completing a summit tour. Passing several mountain lakes, I walked around the Mattmark reservoir. While the regular hiking trail was crowded with other people, I was able to enjoy the undisturbed tranquillity a few hundred metres further up on the alpine hiking trail. On the way back on the other side of the lake, I was also almost alone.

Looking across a very calm lake on a sunny morning. A soft blue sky with a few thin, gauzy clouds. A gossamer early morning mist hovers above much of the far end of the pond, catching the early morning sunshine. A small peninsula coming in from the left features a very symmetrical spruce tree, tall grass and low shrubs. Many tall, stalky water plants are just offshore around it. A mountain rises in the background with a section of sheer rock cliffs on its steep, otherwise wooded slopes facing us. A beautiful forest of spruce, fit and northern hardwoods surround the lake and covers the mountain. Some of those hardwoods are starting to show fall colors.

This weekend we completed my first route rated at 3A on Soviet scale (AD/AD+ on Alpine Scale)

Named "Archa" after the tree of similarly named species (high-altitude Asian pine) marking the start of technical section of the route

Climbing was moderate - neither very hard, nor very interesting. Still physically demanding, because of undersized boots I wear for climbing, hot weather and mostly lost acclimatization for 3000m+

July 16, 1983, 42 years ago today: The South Mountain area in southern Pennsylvania is by no means pristine wilderness. The AT also crossed a bunch of dirt roads that ran east-to-west across the ridge. I passed dim traces of several old circular hearths where wood was partially burned in order to create charcoal.

July 16, 1983, 42 years ago today: The first six miles today resembled the last few miles of yesterday’s hike. The Appalachian Trail followed the long, relatively flat top of South Mountain, paralleling a gravel track which ran for miles along the ridge crest. Giant mounds of sand and twigs bordered the trail at frequent intervals.

Evening falls as we are hiking a trail high up a mountainside. Although there is no snow or ice visible, it is the middle of winter. Almost all the leaves are down except for a handful of wrinkled brown leaves clinging to a few trees and the waxy green leaves of a small laurel thicket to our left. Some flattened and faded fallen leaves are scattered across the bare ground. The sky is a soft blue gray with streaks of thin gray clouds. The recently set sun is tinting the sky and clouds along the horizon in bright orange and gold pastels.

Standing at the west end in the morning the sun rises just left of Mount Dana in the summer.
