Australian mammal extinctions

"Where cats and foxes are abundant, there should be fewer native mammals."

"Tragically, Australia is the world leader in mammal extinctions. About 40 species have gone extinct in the 238 years since European colonisation began, and nearly 80 species are now imperilled. It’s essential we understand what factors caused these extinctions and ongoing decline."

I thought I was setting up a nice, charitable buffet for the neighborhood birds. Turns out, I’ve actually just hired a very demanding, barefoot site manager-and yes, he’s conducting inspections.

New video out!
This week we're taking a brief intermission from the summertime wildlife travels to share a little something different: a winter run I made with family up to visit Wind Cave National Park! The cave was finally open to tours again so we took advantage, and I put together a short "tour" of my own for you! Of course it's more visual here than anything, so I strongly encourage making your own visit if you can, it's a unique cave with some very particular formations that are exceedingly uncommon. And as a bonus, as we left the park it couldn't leave us without some sort of animal encounter, so we got some very nice footage of a small pack of local coyotes lounging around one of the prairie dog towns!

Two bird learnings for today. I've had trouble identifying a couple of birds for a long while. Using a telephoto lens really helped.

1. There's a variety of little birds that have thrown me off for some time. I could never quite pin them down until today, when I finally got a good look at the back of their heads and realized they were Ruby-crowned Kinglets! I never had binos or a good lens on hand when I see them and, without the red crown flaring, I missed the subtle red dot. Mystery solved! (I'll include a meh photo I took today that shows the elusive red spot).

2. Turns out those dark little birds have been Dark-eyed Junco all along. I had presumed they would be larger, which I need to stop doing for birds. I was also getting confused by their variety in color. Thanks to their pink beaks and song, I think I finally have them down now. Another mystery solved.

It's been a while since I posted, but Lopa the vixen has been a regular visitor this past week or so. I took this photo last night. She's looking in great condition. We've also spotted a dog fox nearby, which makes sense as this is prime breeding season. permuted.org.uk/photography/fo… #fox #nature #wildlife #photography

A bittern stands on the frozen surface of a lake. Its brown and beige patterned plumage contrasts gently with the cool blue tones of the ice and blends with the dry reeds in the foreground. The bird holds its bill slightly upward, a typical camouflage posture that conveys calm, focus, and winter stillness.

Tan with a Touch of Fire

I’m not especially pleased with how this image of a female Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) turned out. The original was too noisy, and I couldn’t quite smooth it out the way I wanted. Still, I liked the way her crest leans sassily to one side, so I thought I’d share.

If you’re captivated by northern cardinals and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:
