How about a bit of good #nature news for once? I’ve enjoyed the company of a lot of #birds on my wooded land in Eastern Washington this summer. Nice big flocks of blackbirds, turkeys, and crows. A dozen species of songbirds. Turkey vultures. A couple of big ravens croaking out their spooky sounds. And a decent number of geese are back already.
Been here 25 years, and know these 35 acres well. Lots of changes I don’t like seeing to the #climate but when I see something that gives me joy like all these wings large and small, I try to appreciate it.

I like how the American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) seems to call out to the chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) as it departs. It’s almost as if the goldfinch is saying, “Wait, come back — there’s still plenty to eat here.”

Under the right conditions*, I imagine these sound like mewling mountain lion cubs** and I'm glad to finally figure out they're not. They're just weird little bird sounds, coming from a Gnatcatcher.

I visited the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens for the first time today, and the grounds were stunning. While I was there I was lucky enough to have a Welcome Swallow pose for me on a branch overhanging a body of water. I don't recall ever having seen one before - perhaps because they're so small and speedy. They're very beautiful birds, and there were quite a few of them flitting about at the gardens here today. I hope to see more of them.
