Snug as a bug in a rose mallow bud!

Bit cold this July morning. Found this (likely) 2-spotted longhorn bee a bit sleepy/groggy in the rose mallow where it decided to bed down.

How 'bout that black and pink though?!

Extreme closeup photograph of a (likely) two-spotted longhorn bee resting just within the central petals of a partially opened rose mallow bud (Hibiscus laevis). The bee has a few patches of fine granules of pink-white rose mallow pollen on its leg and head. This bee species has similar features to honeybees with a black abdomen, dark thorax, and head covered in fine black hairs, two long antennae, three simple black eyes on the forehead, and two black and gray compound eyes facing forward, six segmented legs, and transparent wings with dark veining. The upper segments of the bee's legs are covered in fine black hairs but the lower segments on the rear legs are covered in fine pale-yellow hairs.

The recent rains brought out a beautiful Dog Vomit Slime Mold (Fuligo septica) munching on a decomposing log in the garden.
The German name "Gelbe Lohblüte" translates to "Flowers of Tan" and sounds more pleasant 😉 .

The agave weevil (Scyphophorus acupunctatus) is big, relative to most weevils. The larvae--called nixtamal worms--are evidently big enough to eat. What better way to get rid of your agave crop's pests than to eat them! There's a fascinating story about nixtamal worms here:

I found this one crossing the hiking trail at Black Mesa State Park in far, far western Oklahoma. The #biodiversity at this park was stunning.

My favourite butterfly of the summer so far – a common blue (Polyommatus icarus) in the garden today 🦋

The black & white fringed blue topside means it's a male – the females have a range of browns & blues, with orange edge spots. The underside is pretty as well.

Pictures aren't super-sharp – I was struggling to keep my footing in a steep location, trying to get closer 😬

A close-up macro view of an extremely skinny brown snake's head & next. The snake has large eyes and if you squint, extremely pale forked tongue. The snake is slinking down so that the head & tongue are positioned with a background of a large red petal of a tropical flower. This is a Blunt-headed Tree Snake. La Tarde, Osa Peninsula, Costa. All snakes were professionally wrangled by a local expert and returned to the wild after the shoot. Don't try this at home. I later learned this might be a mildly venomous species. A single currant leaf, the original green and dark red colors were changed to bright blue, and turquoise, the veins appear bright orange and pink. This festival of waxy lumps is a baby biting midge, AKA a Forcipomyia larvae. Before they grow up to be bloodsuckers, they're surprisingly cute.

They're very common on decaying logs here in Aotearoa, but I don't often photograph them. However, my good friend and fellow macrophotographer Andy Murray loves them, and has a whole webpage dedicated to them - so go check that out!
