Foraging early in the morning when flowers have not been visited by competing pollinators may mean that the ‘early bee’ achieves extremely high foraging rates.
Many flowers furnish much higher nectar crops at this time.

"The biggest berry bloom in New Zealand’s forests in decades has set off a mating frenzy among the critically endangered Kākāpō, the world’s beefiest parrot.
[...]
The Kākāpōs have outgrown [their] tiny refuges, and the pressure is on to “restore the mauri, or life force, of the habitat” on larger islands by removing the invasive predators there, Davis says."

i simply do not understand the difficulty here

abc.net.au/news/2026-02-19/cli…

it's not hard, not complicated, it's easy, viz:

  • the science is clear & unambiguous... go with the science
  • bodies that go with the science are allies & are to be listened to, eg, the greens, the prog indies, greenpeace, the climate council et al
  • bodies like advance, & all the fossilfool lobby groups, are blatant liars, have no credibility, & shall not be even entertained by parlie. indeed, they should be proscribed
  • the science is clear & unambiguous... go with the science
  • the science is clear & unambiguous... go with the science
  • the science is clear & unambiguous... go with the science

"The study shows that current reforestation practices are on the wrong track – both here in Denmark, where subsidies are only granted for planting dense forests, and elsewhere in Europe. This will not only be harmful for biodiversity; it will be in direct contradiction to the type of ecosystems that Europe’s species have evolved in over millions of years."

More than four out of every five dead black vultures examined by Uni of Georgia researchers tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, says a new study published in Nature.
The actual toll of the virus on the integral species is likely exponentially higher.
Black vultures’ indiscriminate scavenging appears to sustain transmission of the virus beyond the typical bird flu season, the study found. This is worrisome.

Reading for today:

Wan, et al. "Functional coexistence theory: Identifying mechanisms linking biodiversity and ecosystem function." Ecological Monographs 95, no. 3 (2025): e70033.

Many many people have speculated on when species' coexistence leads to a diveristy-productivity relationship, but the links get messy very fast. This paper does a nice job linking simple models from both fields.

Some photos of Purple Pipers at Jones Beach, NY, last Saturday (Feb. 28).

Unusually there were dozens if not more of these shorebirds present, and not only on their favored rocky habitats, but running around on the beach in multitudes with Sanderlings and Dunlins. I suspect the intense cold and snow storms we've had over the past two months affected their food supply on the jetties, leading them to forage with their cousins. These birds nest in the Arctic tundra and overwinter in our middle latitudes. In a sense, by favoring the expansion of the polar vortex, climate change was bringing the Arctic conditions they migrate away from right to them.

World Wildlife Day – 3 March

Observed on 3 March to mark the adoption of CITES (1973). Declared by the UN in 2013, the day highlights the need to protect wild animals and plants from unsustainable trade.

Wildlife supports biodiversity, livelihoods, and ecosystem balance, but faces threats from habitat loss, climate change, and illegal trade. CITES regulates global trade to ensure species survival.

Australian wildlife in ‘harm’s way’, with volunteers left to ‘pick up the pieces’ amid climate crisis, fires and floods

"Last financial year, volunteers responded to more than 320,000 calls for help for sick, injured or orphaned wildlife. Nearly 130,000 rescue operations were conducted and vets assessed 51,000 injured animals."

"The soaring demand is being driven by climate change and habitat destruction."

“As a consequence of these pressures, more and more animals are getting in harm’s way. When they get in harm’s way, governments take very little interest. So it is left to volunteers to pick up the pieces and get those animals back into the wild. Currently responsibility for injured animals falls on the community."

"We need a national approach.”
