“At the Edge of Lake Manly, Sunrise” — Solitary figure at the edge of Lake Manly and the reflection of a desert mountain sunrise.

Most of my landscape photographs include little or no evidence of human presence. But sometimes including a human figure can transform a photograph. (I suggest obscuring the figure with the tip of your finger to see how much it changes things.) The person obviously provides a focal point, but also invites viewers to imagine themselves in the scene…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2026/01/19/pe…

Tallow Trees, A Twist on Tradition

This is a stand of Chinese tallow trees, photographed in late summer or early fall. The leaves were originally green, but I experimented with the color settings until they glowed with a rich orange hue. The transformation feels right—I like the way it turned out.

Crimson Star

This photograph features a vibrant red sweetgum leaf in its autumn phase, shaped like a crisp five-pointed star. It remains attached to a weathered, rustic branch and appears solitary at first glance. However, the framing is intentional—the leaf is one among hundreds, artfully cropped to evoke the quiet dignity of a lone witness to seasonal change.

Among the Branches

I saw this northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) one day, flittering through the branches of our crepe myrtle trees. Their silhouette is easy to pick out from a distance — the long tail helps, and they’re noticeably larger than the finches and sparrows. My wife used to hear them pecking at the window in the mornings and thought they were reminding us to put bird seed out.

If you’re captivated by cardinals and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:

Tufted Titmouse, A Crest Above the Rest

One afternoon, while sitting in the backyard with my dog Charlie, I spotted a Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) perched nearby.

Rose of a Different Color

This is a rose—but let’s call it a rose of a different color. The original photo captured an orange bloom, but what remains is a yellow-orange flower streaked with red, pink, and hints of blue where the shadows settle. Around it swirls a kaleidoscope of color, transforming the scene into something more dreamlike than botanical.

A Return to the Sky

This is a Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) shortly after plunging into the ocean. Now airborne again, it’s climbing to an altitude where it can resume hunting. I chose this photo because it clearly shows the pelican’s short tail—a detail often overlooked in flight.

Island in the Haze

This is a hazy coastal view of one end of a Caribbean island—likely Roatán, though I’d need to pin down the dates to be sure. The land extends from the right side of the frame, curving gently into the sea. Buildings cluster near the shoreline, modest and scattered, with white foamy waves brushing the coast below. The scene is quiet, softened by mist and distance, where land, water, and memory meet in a muted palette.

My photo gallery features over 1400 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

Grassland Encounter

Charlie and I spent a couple of hours outside yesterday, watching the birds and breathing in the cool air. I was hoping to spot something unusual—one of the odd species that sometimes pass through—but it was just the usual suspects for this time of year.

Still, there was a quiet moment worth noting: a sparrow and a cardinal sharing a patch of ground as they foraged. The cardinal found something—a grub or insect, maybe—and the sparrow turned to look, curious about the find. Not quite companions, but neighbors in the moment.

Sparrow in a Pine Tree

This is a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina), which I suspect has the largest population around here at the moment — though the goldfinches might have them beat. Hard to say for sure. There’s no official count, just what the eyes and ears suggest.

Shoreline Illusion

During one of my forays to the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi, I captured this interesting image of a ring‑billed gull (Larus delawarensis) and a snowy egret (Egretta thula). The scale in the photo feels a bit deceptive. The egret, which is actually the closer and much larger of the two birds, appears almost the same size as the gull. Maybe it’s just me, but the perspective plays a clever little trick on the eye.

Here’s a visually striking image of a Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), its feathers puffed slightly to insulate against the winter air. A light dusting of snow might have added to the scene — but I’m in Louisiana, after all.

Whisper of Indigo

Here’s a photo of an indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea). A few years back, they were everywhere, and I made the most of it—snapping as many shots as I could. This one isn’t as sharp as I’d like, but that brilliant blue is hard to ignore.

A Different Lens, Goldfinches in the Inverted World

This is a photo of a tree filled with goldfinches, shown through an inverted color filter. The sky glows gold, the tree appears in stark black and white, and the goldfinches themselves shift into black, white, gold, and brown. Their colors are subtle in this inversion—so subtle that I’d need to zoom in close to see them clearly.

Feathered Crown

This tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) showed up one quiet morning. These birds rarely pause long enough for a photo—you almost have to anticipate their landing before they arrive. In this case, I got lucky. I was photographing dozens of small birds when one happened to be this crested visitor.

Crimson Crooner

One morning, years ago, I looked up into a tall tree at the forest’s edge and saw dozens of birds with red breasts. Most flew off, but one or two lingered. I wondered if they might be house finches, but they were too large. Turned out they were American robins. I’ll admit to a touch of disappointment—I’ve never seen a full flock of house finches. Still, here’s a male House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) I spotted around the same time.

Sunflower Adventure

While reviewing some underexposed house finch photos I took one spring, I came across a bird with unusually colored head feathers. It might be a young male who hasn’t yet developed the characteristic reddish plumage around the head and chest—or perhaps it’s one of the rarer yellow variants. I managed to capture a few shots of this curious finch, and this one stands out as the most intriguing.

My Kingdom

A few autumns ago, in the morning rain, this hawk appeared in the oak tree just beyond my backyard fence. I first tried photographing it through the storm door, but a veil of leaves obscured its head. So I improvised—a quick waterproof cover for my camera—and stepped out into the rain to bear witness properly. Based on its size, I believe it’s a Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperii), though it could be a Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus). The resemblance between the two is uncanny—this is a sovereign guess, not a definitive ID.
