While out on fieldwork in Cambridgeshire, England, I discovered the rare Yellow Loosestrife bee (Macropis europaea). This is quite an interesting little bee as the females only collect pollen from Yellow Loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris) as food for their larvae so the bees only occur where this plants grows (which is mainly wet and boggy places). The bees nest in the ground and are also using the oil from the flowers to make their nests water-proof. Quite ingenious! #bees #pollinators #flowers

I was not the only one seeking shade at the weekend. This bumblebee was just clinging to the shady side of the Allium flower and did not move at all. It probably got too hot and tried to cool down. Bumblebees are not really made for all this hot weather as they easily overheat with all the hair on their bodies. #bees #pollinators #climatechange

- bildet viele goldgelbe löwenzahnähnliche Blütenköpfchen an locker verzweigten Stängeln,
- überaus wertvolle Pollenquelle für sehr viele Insekten (Wildbienen, Käfer ...),
- lässt sich leicht entfernen, wenn es mal zuviel Pippau wird.🤭

I tried to find a #bee for #Bienstag today, but only spotted a beautiful Oriental hornet that likes to eat #bees. And pizza. So here's one from the archive instead. 🐝

The bumbles were really going after the pretty hardhack blossoms at one spot on the morning ramble, cool to witness the relationship between native species. #Hiking #Bloomscrolling #Bees #AltText

🎶 How many bees could a blue bloom boast, if a blue bloom could boast bees 🎶

Have found the Pantaloon bee (Dasypoda hirtipes) on my allotment for the first time. This bee is quite distinctive as it has extremely long, golden pollen-collecting hairs on the hind legs. The bees are quite rare and like sandy dry habitats. The females often visit composite flowers like the chicory in the picture. I have also seen them on Inula flowers. The nests are excavated in sandy sparsely vegetated soil. Really happy that the bees like my allotment 😀 #pollinators #bees

I posted a different angle of this (furrow, sweat) bee earlier today. Was just looking at this other photo and noticed what looks like 3 tiny eyes on the top of its head. Read a few insect sites, wikipedia and nothing mentions them. Any ideas?

The bumblebees love Black mullein (Verbascum nigrum). They are all over the flowers in the mornings as the flowers close in the afternoon. The bumblebees seem to especially like the orange pollen which they collect avidly. #pollinators #bees

My new bee hotel seems to be very popular with Leafcutter bees (Megachile sp.). I find it quite funny how they close their nests with pieces of leaves. The leaves they cut seem to come mainly from my Katsura tree which is the closest tree to the bee hotel, the tell-tale signs of the leafcutter bees in action can bee seen in the second picture. #pollinators #bees

Here are two of our resident garden inhabitants
- Common carder bumblebee (Bombus pascuorum) on white toadflax (Linaria purpurea alba)
- Early bumblebee (Bombus pratorum) on purple toadflax (Linaria purpurea)

I reckon that fits in well with #silentsunday too

Tiny Harebell Carpenter bees (Chelostoma campanularum) are out and about at the moment. The female bees collect pollen only from harebells and other bellflowers and nest in tiny beetle holes in wooden posts or tree stems. The bees also like to sleep and rest inside the flowers so have a look if you have bellflowers in your garden and you might be able to spot them. #bees #pollinators

Bumblebees love oriental poppies which are still flowering. They always make a very loud buzzing sound when inside the flowers which is also called buzz-pollination which helps to dislodge the pollen from the anthers. Poppies have no nectar but copious amounts of high quality protein-rich pollen so are highly regarded by bees. #flowers #pollinators #bees

Have seen the first Wool Carder Bee on the allotment today. The males are very aggressive and defend a territory, they are even known to kill other pollinators if they come too close. They like flowers such as lamb`s ear and perennial foxgloves and the females collect the hairs from lamb`s ear leaves to build their nests. #bees #pollinators

« A solar farm was built to make electricity, but the ground beneath the panels quietly began doing something no one planned for » ☀️

「 Among them were the ones that matter most : bees. #Bees have been collapsing for years, squeezed out by vanishing meadows and the steady loss of the wild corners they depend on. Yet the very pollinators in trouble across the country were not merely hanging on beneath the panels. They were flourishing. 」 🐝

I have self-sown Nigella all over the allotment, all sorts of colours, dark blue, pale blue, pink and white. The flowers are quite beautiful when looked at close and are loved by pollinators, especially bumblebees. #flowers #bees
