Black-necked Stork, Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus. This amazing bird landed down on the banks of Jardine lagoon in Far north Queensland as I was sitting there watching a Whistling Kite nest. The amazing colours on its head and neck shimmered in the sunlight, as it stalked about in the shallow waters, looking for food. 🕷 NEW: On an Australian #research expedition, marine biologist Jérôme Mallefet tested thousands of deep-sea specimens for light production in a darkroom aboard a research vessel.

Two giant sea #spider species, Colossendeis tasmanica and C. minor, glowed along the undersides of their legs when chemically stimulated. The researchers suspect the trait may be borrowed from #anemones the spiders eat, or used to find #prey.

🐕 NEW: New genetic #research shows #Chihuahuas carry a small amount of #coyote ancestry, possibly from crossbreeding many generations ago.

The #study validated a new #ancestry method on American #dog breeds, including the #xoloitzcuintli. Chihuahuas also retain roughly 4% pre-contact dog ancestry. Coyote #genes didn't make them small – a mutation in the IGF1 gene explains most small breeds.
