When I first looked at the image of this duck, its plumage seemed almost black. For a moment I was excited, imagining it might be the elusive Anas Daffiana. But on closer inspection, it appears more likely to be a dark‑feathered Mallard hybrid.

Giant anteater

This giant anteater was roaming the plains of El Encanto del Guanapalo, Colombia. It uses its claws to dig open ant and termite colonies and its thin, long, sticky tongue to catch them inside their nests. We had to get up before sunrise to see it but were able to get quite close without disturbing it. It is larger than I anticipated, probably 2 meters long when including the tail.

A dragonfly sits on the leaf of a bog plant. It is pale blue all over, eyes, thorax and abdomen. The pale blue thorax isn't seen in UK individuals so it isn't a reliable ID feature - the blue eyes rather than the green of Black-tailed Skimmer are more reliable.

Eine Kohlmeise (Parus major) sitzt aufgeplustert auf dem Zweig eines kahlen Apfelbaums. Der Betrachter sieht sie von schräg hinten. Der Vogel hat den linken Flügel angehoben und stochert mit dem (nicht sichtbaren) Schnabel darunter herum. Es wirkt, als wolle er sein Gesicht mit dem Flügel vor dem Licht schützen. Unter der Meise hängen zwei gelb-rote Äpfel. Der Vogel hat einen kurzen schwarzen Schnabel. Die Federn am Kopf sind schwarz und an den Wangen und Ohrdecken weiß. Der Rücken erscheint grünlich, Brust und Bauch gelb. Der untere Rücken, die Flügeldecken und der Schwanz sind blaugrau. In der Mitte der Unterseite des Rumpfes befindet sich ein schwarzer Längsstrich.
