Hailing from the vivacious city of Paris, Le CyKlopâs affinity for street art was ignited during the flourishing graffiti culture of the 1980s. However, his fascination was not confined to the freedom and spontaneity of street art; he was captivated by the potential to transfigure the ordinary world into an extraordinary canvas.
âI try to break free from conventional supports such as walls or canvas, to invest in objects. By putting an eye on them, I try to bring them to life, give them a soul and give birth to a form of fantasy,â Le CyKlop explains. He further adds, âA playful and anthropomorphic art that borrows its artistic language from toys, comics or animal bestiary. By drawing on the history of the Cyclops, I revisiting Greek mythology.â
Rather than utilizing paint on a blank wall, Le CyKlop views everyday street fixtures, particularly the humble bollard, as unique canvases. These mundane posts, with a splash of paint and a sprinkle of imagination, transform into one-eyed creatures. Suddenly, these functional items, often overlooked, develop a life of their own, morphing into Cyclopean characters overseeing the city streets.

HERA: I have an apartment with high ceilings in which the living room also serves as my workshop. So when I entertain friends, we sit in my open kitchen where a huge bookcase takes up an entire wall. There are a lot of childrenâs books, and just as many books by photographers like Christina Mittermeier and Steve Mc Curry. They are a source of inspiration and I take them from apartment to apartment, like an essential part of who I am.

HERA: Susanne Goga, German novelist, is single-handedly responsible for my renewed interest in the city in which I live, Berlin. Her series âLEO BERLINâ is full of historical glimpses when she tells the life of her hero Leo Wechsler, Commissioner for Crim âin the 1920s. I have as big a weakness for thrillers as for history. HERA: There are many of them but one that I take in my luggage when I travel to paint is âAlibi Schoolâ by Jeffrey Mc Daniel. Itâs a collection of poetry, and in fact, he gave it to me himself in 1997: I was 16 and I was on a school exchange at Venice High School in Los Angeles. Jeffrey had been invited as a lecturer in Lynn Sabinâs poetry class and he had an insane way of mixing humor with the gruesome side of life. To be honest, at 16, I didnât really understand where his energy was coming from, but I did understand a few years later when I started doing graffiti. It was at this precise moment that I rediscovered the book of Mc Daniel and that I reread his verses over and over again until I knew them by heart. It makes people smile and look at their city in a whole new way. His work shows that even simple objects in everyday life can be magical if you look at them differently.
Since 2006, OAKOAK has had streets, walls, sidewalks and roads as its playground.
Originally from Saint Etienne, he sticks his drawings in each of the places he crosses in order to create a smile in the pedestrian at the bend of a street where he does not expect it.
His approach consists of diverting urban elements, playing with flaws that at first glance seem of no particular interest, such as cracks in a wall. He thus adds his own vision, his own references which often relate to the geek universe. A way of imagining the urban space in a more poetic way.
From playful interactions with crosswalks to whimsical depictions of beloved cartoon characters like Homer Simpson and Obelix, Oakoakâs work brings a fresh perspective to the streets.
OAKOAK: For me street art has to use urban elements. Itâs the most important thing for street art. Using and playing with things you find in the street.
