Not many years ago, small family farms dotted this landscape. It was a time before "get big or get out," when individuals, not corporations, were the norm.

May it be, in these days when humans are told we're unnecessary and irrelevant, that individuals join back together to form communities where the relevancy and value of humanity is celebrated, not attacked.

Think about roads. Think about how very many of them there are on this planet, from freeways to highways to country roads to primitive gravelways running through isolated landscapes.

They all go somewhere, all pass by and through landscapes that we sometimes observe and see, and other times rush through without noticing anything at all.

My father-in-law used to drive my mother-in-law nuts because he avoided taking the same path, on their daily trip to the grocery store, twice in a row. Always, he looked for a new way of getting there: "There are fewer stop signs here," he'd tell her, or, "We've never seen these houses before."

He refused to be confined to the same old way.

The rocks were slippery when wet, sharp if you fell on them, so as a sensible person, you watched your feet and kept them at a distance from treacherous places.

You didn't have to be right in the middle of it to feel as if you were.
