How do folks manage the balance between having a more private social media experience with the fediverse versus a fully public one? I'm starting to run into some conflict with how I use the fediverse like I would my Instagram for example. I've always had private accounts because I only want to share with people I know. Over the years, I've realized how far we've drifted from the original idea of the World Wide Web. These days, it feels more like a corporate, big-tech web. I think there's real value in self-hosting as much as possible while still using major platforms, especially when you can pick more European and reasonable options.
People often forget that YouTube, WhatsApp, and Instagram were once independent companies, not owned by Meta or Google. Google was meant to be ad-free, and OpenAI was founded as a non-profit research organization, etc.
We'll probably never return to that vision, but I'm glad I own most my data and have about half of my tech self-hosted and open-sourced. It's only a dent, but I'm proud of that dent.
Apparently there is a "backlash" against a Black community setting boundaries for themselves?
I guess that's one thing the fediverse and Atmosphere have in common. People throwing tantrums and demanding that complete strangers listen to their unwanted opinions.

1. Algorithm - pushes specific ideology, causes depression in young adults, distorts reality.
2. Owners propagandise their ideology (see above)
3. Certain voices are censored, just like in communist China. YouTube kicked off Aljazera news. TikTok US censors anti-#ICE sentiment, anti-genocide voices.
4. At election time, owners and the wealthy change the outcome of actual elections with social media.

Strict "age verification" laws is another way of saying more online censorship, more digital gate keeping, more surveillance, and more unnecessary exposure of personal data in breaches and leaks.
