Please share your awesome custom emojis here. Then I can copy to my #gotosocial instance 😘
Here are mine

Does it have any negative impact if my instance allows up-to 5k characters per post? I don't expect to use anywhere near this limit - since this would be a blogpost length post - but wonder if there's any downsides to keeping this limit.
Fediverse people, need your advice! 🙂
Do you know any GoToSocial servers that are open to public signups?
Would especially like to know about general servers that aren't aimed at a specific niche.
I've had many people asking about joining a GTS server lately, not sure what to suggest as there isn't a "JoinGoToSocial" website anywhere and the official GTS site is aimed at self-hosting people.

In there I tell you how
- a simple config change brought the instance down
- I was completely misled as to the reason
- my backups failed
- the instance is up again

Hello hello, here's bugfix release v0.20.1 of #GoToSocial, aka More Sinister Sloth 😈😈
codeberg.org/superseriousbusin…
If you're updating to this version from v0.20.0, it's a very easy update with no db migrations.
If you're updating to this version from a version before v0.20.0, please follow the update instructions from v0.20.0, but replace 0.20.0 with 0.20.1 throughout. Be aware that the update to 0.20.x contains some potentially very long migrations. Please do read the notes carefully!
Thanks for all the bug reports that helped us find and fix stuff ❤
Release highlights
- Fix an issue causing duplicate posts to appear in timelines.
- Fix RSS format issue.
- Speed up some queries a little bit (lists in particular, but home timeline a little too).
- Return more sensible HTTP codes from fedi endpoints when things happen that aren't actually errors.
- Add API scope for managing emojis.
v0.20.1 More Sinister Sloth 😈😈 - superseriousbusiness/gotosocial
Here's version 0.20.1 of GoToSocial; it's a bugfix release! **If you're updating to this version from v0.20.0**, it's a very easy update with no db migrations. **If you're updating to this version from a version before v0.20.Codeberg.org
as foretold for many months, now that v0.20.0 of #GoToSocial is released, we have removed our mirror of the code from Github, and removed all our other archived repositories from there as well
all development has been taking place solely on @Codeberg for months now, we just didn't want to remove our repo from Github immediately when we switched, since people might have been relying on it; so if you hadn't moved whatever mirrors / build systems etc to our codeberg repo yet, you ought to do it

v0.20.0 Sinister Sloth 😈 - superseriousbusiness/gotosocial
Here's version 0.20.0 of GoToSocial, **Sinister Sloth**. It's been a long summer of gently poking and prodding at the sloth's tummy and sides to make xem giggle.Codeberg.org
Hi all, here's the third release candidate for version 0.20.0 of #GoToSocial
codeberg.org/superseriousbusin…
Couple little bugfixes for issues that were in rc2.
Please read the migration notes carefully for instructions on how to upgrade to this version.
If you're coming from v0.19.2 or below, please be aware that the migrations in this release are quite long (can take several hours, even!), as we had to rethread the entire statuses table to handle the new way we cache status threads (and to improve timeline performance). Please plan downtime accordingly, and most importantly hang in there and don't be tempted to interrupt the migration process!
What happened to rc3, you ask? It's a secret.
v0.20.0-rc4 - superseriousbusiness/gotosocial
Here's the third release candidate for v0.20.0 of GoToSocial. For instructions to update to this release candidate from versions < v0.20.0-rc1, see the [v0.20.0-rc1 release candidate notes](https://codeberg.Codeberg.org
my Fediverse post migration tool slurp can now import from Bluesky!
i'm looking for beta testers who would like to give it a try, ideally on a throwaway Fedi server like a GTS testrig.
caveats:
- currently doesn't check Bluesky's advisory "Discourage apps from showing my account to logged-out users" profile flag: imported Bluesky posts will have public visibility on Fedi
- doesn't attempt to translate Bluesky thread gates to GTS interaction policies, because i need to catch up on both first
- video alt text is preserved but captions are not, because Bluesky's per-language VTT sidecar caption files would need to be converted and inlined for Fedi servers expecting one file per video
- doesn't handle quote posts, because GTS doesn't have quote posts

Hi everyone, here's the second release candidate for version 0.20.0 of #GoToSocial:
codeberg.org/superseriousbusin…
Compared to v0.20.0-rc1 there's been a few bugfixes, some docs changes, dependency bumps, and some improvements to migration performance (hopefully!).
Finde dazu irgendwie kein #Tutorial ...

v0.20.0-rc1 - superseriousbusiness/gotosocial
Lads lads lads lads! Here's the release candidate for v0.20.0 of GoToSocial! It's been a long summer of gently poking and prodding at the sloth, and she's finally getting ready to lumber out the door and say hello.Codeberg.org
A friendly reminder for all who are looking for an alternative to gup.pe because it has apparently been taken over by new and/or unknown entities.
tootgroup.py offers group functionality for Mastodon, Pleroma, GotoSocial and probably others (albeit untested). All you need is an account that acts as your group and some computer running Python that regularily connects to it.
Its written by me, easy, lightweight and most importantldy, not dependant on a third party service.
Howto and Download from its Github Page: https://github.com/oe4dns/tootgroup.py

GoToSocial - ready for Prime Time?
Short answer: Hell yes. After completing the full migration and running in production for weeks, I can confidently say GoToSocial is ready for serious use.Matthias Klein
@adrian@social.kuntner.dev
notfellchen. Do you know by heart what the alt text description limit is?Any rules I should be aware of? I'd post not more than a post a minute and less than 20 per day overall (in reality it'll probably average 2-3 per week, just being cautious here)
More and more I see the value in running your own instance. I haven't tried with the Mastodon software yet, but #gotosocial was shockingly easy (for someone with a fair amount of linux experience anyhow) to get online in a tiny VPS.
I set it up to collect online writing I wanted to save while deleting Blog, FB, Twitter, LJ, Reddit, etc. Mostly longer-format stuff, and I was able to set post length to 12000 to accommodate some of the larger pieces.
Hello Fediverse, my name is Sam! I've been a regular fedi user since ~2019, mostly on Fosstodon, now on my own instance!
I'm a #Linux and #FOSS enthusiast, with a focus on #SelfHosting, #SmallWeb, #3DPrinting, and #CyberSecurity. My personal instance is running #GoToSocial.
Happy to be here!
i tried a bunch of things on the #fedi, and genuinely i think #gotosocial is the best. i wish it had a more direct front-end for me to post from. maybe that's coming. but, genuinely i love it.
it's super light, customizable, it reminds me of the old internet in all of the best ways possible. it's not a bloated mess and it's easy to navigate. it keeps on getting new features and new additions without ever feeling like it's getting heavier or harder to use. i'm not the system administrator of our server, but from what i understand from her, it's been pretty painless to run and manage. it's just great.
every time i check out a profile and i land on a gotosocial instance, it makes me super happy. i love it. this is what i want my little corner of the #fediverse to be like.
Dear Fedi friends,
By now you might have seen the post announcing the release of my promotional video for the Fediverse. But in case you have boosts turned off, here we go: news.elenarossini.com/fedivers…
I posted about it this morning from my #GoToSocial account because I have a 5000 character limit there. And I had so many people to thank for their help. It really takes a village.
Thank you for all the wonderful feedback so far ❤️

GoToSocial is a lightweight safety-focused Fediverse server type popular among people who run their own servers.
It's now much easier to run your own GoToSocial server as it's available through managed hosting, where the hosting company does all the techy stuff for you:
➡️ fedihost.co/hosting/gotosocial
You can also transfer your Mastodon account to GoToSocial:
➡️ video.fedihost.co/w/i2AGvZc69g…
(NOTE: Despite the similar name, FediHost is nothing to do with FediTips! 🙂 )

v0.19.1 - superseriousbusiness/gotosocial
Here's version 0.19.1 of GoToSocial! It's a bugfix release. We fixed some bugs. By which we mean we removed them from the sloth, and set them free. They can live their own happy lives now.Codeberg.org

That's it. I've migrated everything from my Fosstodon account to my #gotosocial instance 🦥
My heart felt thanks 🙇💕 to @vyr for making this possible:
- Adding the required APIs to GoToSocial to support back dating status
- Updating slurp and it's documentation

Given what's goin' on Fosstodon-wise, there is presumably a few more people than usual trying to figure out what their next Fedi home should be. If you already have a bit of a following, my suggestion is not to join an instance, but BE an instance (i.e. set up a personal instance). Here's some related stuff I've written and resources!

The migration to #Codeberg was successful 😀
codeberg.org/superseriousbusin…
All issues, comments, reactions, pull requests, releases etc have been preserved thanks to #Forgejo's excellent migration tooling.
We're now doing fix-ups and ci/cd changes to make sure everything works nicely in our new home. The sloth is still hiding under the bed but we're going to coax xem out with treats and pets so xey can explore (at xer own pace obviously).
When you clone GtS now, you can clone it into ~/go/src/code.superseriousbusiness.org/gotosocial to reflect our new module aliases at code.superseriousbusiness.org
The github repo is still there, but we'll be closing open PRs and issues there, since we have them on Codeberg now. We'll keep pushing to github using Codeberg's mirror tooling, but apart from that it is read-only. It will stay around for a while (months?) to give packagers time to move their automation/build tooling to our Codeberg repo.
Thanks for reading 😀
