Dreaming of Florence Italy This image captures the heart of Florence, a city that has shaped the soul of the modern Western world. Florence began as a Roman settlement in the first century BCE and over the centuries grew into a center of trade, banking, art, architecture and learning. By the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries it had become the cradle of the Renaissance, a place where ideas about beauty, science, faith and human potential took root and transformed history. The most striking feature in the scene is the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, known around the world as the Duomo. Brunelleschi’s great dome still stands as one of the most important achievements in architectural history and it rises above the red tiled roofs like a crown over the city. Before I traveled to Florence I knew about el Duomo. I had seen images of the dome and read about its engineering miracle. Yet nothing prepared me for the moment I arrived here in person. As I stood before this skyline I realized I was standing in the birthplace of the Renaissance, the birthplace of the ideas and vision that shaped our modern culture.
