Climate change is bringing dangerous interlopers to Venice’s lagoon.

The city of Venice and its surrounding lagoon are irreversibly at the mercy of climate change.

New research has highlighted how warming seas are bringing invasive species that threaten the lagoon ecosystem and the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

"It is my genuine belief that the only way we will be able to avoid the worst consequences of this emerging existential crisis is if we create a critical mass of people who demand the changes required. For that to happen, we need to rapidly spread awareness, because the general public still lacks much of the basic knowledge that is necessary to understand the dire situation we are in. My wish is to be part of the effort to change that."

— Greta Thunberg, "The Climate Book"

PhDs really are tough but I don't think it is spoken about why. Yes you gotta work hard, I feel not as hard as many doing trades or those who have finished a PhD and are in the industry. The stress comes from the internal pressure. This is your project that defines you as a scientist at this point. It's scary. I'm struggling a lot. Reaching out to the ancient elephant void rn, anyone feeling the same?

How to Launch A Spacecraft Out of the Solar System

Leaving our solar system isn't just about speed; it’s about a complex gravitational dance. We break down the "Interstellar Exit" strategy, exploring how probes use planetary slingshots and ion propulsion to break free from the Sun’s massive gravitational well. This is the ultimate guide to becoming a galactic traveler.

Weekend #Plankton Factoid 🦠🦐
Some calanoid copepods, including Calanus finmarchicus, spend 6-8 months of the winter in a dormancy state as juvenile copepodites deep under the thermocline at a depth of 500-1500m which reduces predation and energy use. This depth is determined by interaction of temperature and salinity of the water and the copepod's lipid content of waxy esters. They have a distinctive overwintering posture with antenna folded underneath.

It turns out that every yawn is actually a coordinated maintenance cycle for your central nervous system.

🤖🤝 Instead of each #robot having its own separate computer, these new #humanoids are connected to a shared #AI #brain.

This "collective intelligence" allows them to coordinate perfectly on difficult tasks, like lifting heavy objects or navigating complex factory floors. When one robot learns a new skill, every other robot on the network instantly knows how to do it too.
