Relax, Play & Entertain Show Garden 2, The 36th Annual Southern California Spring Garden Show, Costa Mesa, California

welchwrite.com/agn/2026/07/15/…

RELAX, PLAY & ENTERTAIN

Step inside your new outdoor living space. Bring the comfort of home to the yard while you lounge on your shaded outdoor bed and take in the garden sights. Lovely shade trees and native and low-water plants create garden rooms that welcome children and pets with treats and water play areas. Later, enjoy your private shower under the sun and then sip beverages while you enjoy appetizers and pizza from your kitchen. Watch the sun go down on a perfect day as you bring the inside to your outdoor retreat.

Interestingly, they eat the leaves of the Common Milkweed, but only ever the flower buds of the Orange.

It is awfully dry here, no rain since mid-June, and hot and sunny every day. Many plants are flagging now, looking tired and wilted, but some plants are still looking good such as Achillea, Eryngium, Verbena, Dianthus, Anthemis and Scabiosa. I stopped watering most plants now except the young shrubs and trees, a few plants which are important to me and I top up the ponds. Everything else has to survive on its own. #climatechange #garden #drought #flowers

🧵1/3

We had 100°F / 38°C heat for several days this week and I thought it might be useful to report on peppers.

Most of the peppers I grow are the species baccatum - exceptionally long-lived perennials that can be cut back in winter and start blooming in March/April. They’re also extremely cold tolerant.

Well, a couple of new cultivars are showing that they’re not heat tolerant.

The wildlife pond on my allotment is a life line for many different animals at the moment as it is so extremely dry and hot and many other water sources have dried up. Many birds come for a bath and a drink; hedgehogs, foxes and other mammals come to drink in the night, and many insects such as bees and wasps need the water as well, honeybees for example collect water to cool down their hives. I also have frogs, newts and many damsel- and dragonflies. #pond #wildlife #garden

Swing Into Spring Show Garden 2, The 36th Annual Southern California Spring Garden Show, Costa Mesa, California

SWING INTO SPRING

This garden display highlights the fluidity between indoor and outdoor living, designed to serve as an open-air extension of the home into the garden. The warm palette and comfortable furnishings create a sanctuary that balances structural privacy with organic softness. At the heart of the design is a suspended swing, reimagining the traditional garden bench as a luxury interior piece. This garden offers a peaceful, flowing connection - a destination tailored for indoor/outdoor enjoyment.

I love Clematis x triternata 'Rubromarginata'. The flowers are quite small but very pretty, and there are lots of them, and they have the most amazing almond scent which fills the whole area on a still day. This Clematis likes well-drained soil and has so far coped very well with the hot and dry weather. #plants #clematis #garden

Have seen Bee wolfs (Philanthus triangulum) again on the allotment. They are solitary wasps and dig nests in sandy spots and hunt honey bees as food for their young. I have them on the allotment every year now as they like to visit the Eryngium flowers for nectar. #insects #wildlife #garden

Azaleas Japanese Garden, CSULB, Long Beach, California [Prints Available]

Dedicated in April 1981, the 1.3 acre garden was built through the generosity of Mrs. Loraine Miller Collins in memory of her late husband, Earl Burns Miller. Following three years of planning, in cooperation with California State University Long Beach, landscape architect Edward R. Lovell was chosen to oversee its creation. The resulting garden reflects the university's continued interest in international education, student and community engagement, as well as the Miller’s interests in nature and wellness. The university is delighted to share this educational, cultural, and aesthetic resource with you.

This area of the new allotment is planted with drought-resistant plants such as Phlomis, Stipa, Origanum and Euphorbia characias. So far I have not watered this area this summer and it is still looking good. The heat and lack of rain is really bad this year, it is more similar to Mediterranean climate than British climate, fields and meadows have turned beige and brown with mostly woody plants still green. #garden #climatechange

The first of the Cayenne chillies are ripening. I'm looking forward to seeing what they taste like but I'll be cautious as they're a LOT hotter than the Jalapeño chillies... 🤔🥵😂

#MothOfTheDay is another of the 'Thorn' leaf mimics. Initially on a wire, I thought it was a leaf, until close inspection revealed:

LUNAR THORN
Selenia lunularia

Named after the white lunar markings on its wings.

Peppers and beans this week.

Update on rat situation: I caged and netted my pepper plants but now they are digging underneath the cages! They even managed to move the bricks I placed around the fencing. So I bit the bullet and ordered solar-powered electric fencing. Won’t arrive until Friday.

So far, their favorite pepper seems to be ají habanero, also my favorite for drying bc it tastes like sweet saffron. 😭

The allotment today, still colourful and looking quite lush despite the dry and hot weather. We had hardly any rain this spring and summer and I am surprised the allotment is still doing ok. But I am trying to adapt the allotment to the changing climate for several years now, with lots of mulching, planting trees for shade, planting very densely and having maximum diversity as there is always something that does well if there are lots of different plants. #climatechange #garden

Not many flowers in the summer garden have a sky-blue colour, Himalayan poppies (Meconopsis) spring to mind but not many people can grow them. Wild chicory (Cichorium intybus) has the same sky-blue flower colour and is easy to grow, the plants are drought resistant and very hardy. Chicory is perennial and comes back every year. #flowers #plants #garden
