- bildet viele goldgelbe löwenzahnähnliche Blütenköpfchen an locker verzweigten Stängeln,
- überaus wertvolle Pollenquelle für sehr viele Insekten (Wildbienen, Käfer ...),
- lässt sich leicht entfernen, wenn es mal zuviel Pippau wird.🤭

Can we all stop using and recommending peat based composts please?

It takes so long to make, peat is a non renewable source

It does far more good storing carbon in the ground in situ than it ever will do in a garden, yes, even for growing food.

I’ve just seen a website recommending using peat based compost😭

Peat was introduced as a cheaper filler for compost mixes within the lifetime of people alive today. It was not always used. We can switch away

Azaleas Japanese Garden, CSULB, Long Beach, California [Prints Available]

Dedicated in April 1981, the 1.3 acre garden was built through the generosity of Mrs. Loraine Miller Collins in memory of her late husband, Earl Burns Miller. Following three years of planning, in cooperation with California State University Long Beach, landscape architect Edward R. Lovell was chosen to oversee its creation. The resulting garden reflects the university's continued interest in international education, student and community engagement, as well as the Miller’s interests in nature and wellness. The university is delighted to share this educational, cultural, and aesthetic resource with you.

The first of the Cayenne chillies are ripening. I'm looking forward to seeing what they taste like but I'll be cautious as they're a LOT hotter than the Jalapeño chillies... 🤔🥵😂

We recently started this project (sweet potatoes growing ) bug am looking for someone who can help us out by teaching us how to grow these potatoes effectively. The potatoes grew well and healthy looking but they didn't put on any potatoe over there down when we reached the day of harvesting , the we couldn't get anything.

Peppers and beans this week.

Update on rat situation: I caged and netted my pepper plants but now they are digging underneath the cages! They even managed to move the bricks I placed around the fencing. So I bit the bullet and ordered solar-powered electric fencing. Won’t arrive until Friday.

So far, their favorite pepper seems to be ají habanero, also my favorite for drying bc it tastes like sweet saffron. 😭

🧄 Another year's garlic harvest. Have not yet had a bum year with garlic. But if there's one thing I know about gardening: never say never. Plants are gonna do what plants are gonna do. A garden is a laboratory filled with X factors. Today, however, I will be thankful for this success. 🥰

I am so excited! I just found a Hummingbird Hawk Moth in the garden! No photo, I'm afraid, as I am still too wobbly, and they move so fast!

This site has some beautiful photos of them. I am going to be riding this high for weeks, I tell you!

Beyond my genius! A water tight solution after trying just about everything else. #gardening #plumbing

Hi, #Mastodon family

Once again, we are reaching out with hope.

First, thank you to everyone who helped us purchase our land which now belongs to us, and we are deeply grateful for your support.

Today, we are launching a new fundraiser for the next important step: digging a permanent water well on our farm. We have tried several ways to secure water, but they haven't been reliable.

A well will provide a sustainable water source, helping us grow food, care for our projects, and empower more young people in our community.

We kindly ask our supporters, friends, and well-wishers to stand with us once again.

Every donation, no matter the amount, brings us closer to making this dream a reality. Please boost or share our fundraiser it makes a huge difference.

Together, we can keep this sustainable project growing. Thank you for your #love #solidarity and continued support.gofundme.com/f/water-well-at-e…

Gardening folk: We have a west facing house which gets frightfully hot in summer. As well as increasing insulation in walls etc, I am thinking of installing a strong metal trellis and growing jasmine all over both stories of that wall. We can trim it in autumn to let the light in and grow it over spring and summer to add another layer of insulation.

Is there a flaw in my plan or gotchas to watch out for?

Alright friends, we worked to get this out today at what is for most of you the beginning of one of the hottest weeks in your region. We're used to living through temperatures sometimes as high as 126 F and often over 110 -- and we've learned a lot. Not a single one of these tips involves running your air conditioner or making expensive alterations to your home, because we understand that all of us are living through climate change with whatever resources we currently hold and nothing more.

Stay cool and hydrated, friends!

Gardening Through a Heat Wave: A Few Tips for You – and Your Garden

Not the author. Was browsing theindex.fyi/ and found this blogpost with simple advice. Some snips I appreciated the reminder for:

Water deeply, not daily. A thorough soaking encourages roots to grow deeper, making plants more resilient. [...]

Skip pruning and fertilizing. Heat-stressed plants are already working hard. Wait until cooler weather returns.

Don’t panic over afternoon wilting. Many plants perk back up in the evening. If they’re still wilted the following morning, they likely need water. [...]

Save the tough jobs. Weeding, digging, hauling mulch, and pushing a wheelbarrow can wait until early morning, late evening, or even another day.

These pretty Bellflowers have self-seeded in the garden, in unexpected places.
I guess I picked them up from a pile of discarded perennials in the bush (as I tend to do), and they may be an introduced species (Campanula persicifolia?), but I really like them.

It's still ridiculously hot with the heat index already way over 100F by 9:30AM but needs must, so we went out and harvested what we could and set the surplus out for the neighbors. Also got enough blueberries picked for another pie or two. Now back in the shade with a LARGE iced tea. Not gunna do no more today!

At #Area51 at 5:30 AM watched a vole hop easily over my anti vole shield as I watered and proceed to move its young from their now water logged nest. I stopped watering once I noticed, even if I have no love for voles.

It’s black current and black raspberry season. First blueberries ripe too.

Queen of the prairie, Filipendula rubra, in the garden right now. A native plant, basically a very tall pink meadowsweet. I think it should be renamed queen of the faerie tbh #flowers #BloomScrolling #gardening

Side note: the enthusiastic woman who sold us the original plant many years ago called it by its genus name but pronounced it FLIP-n-doolah so that’s how I’ve thought of it ever since.

Good morning from #Area51, a garden allotment in Northeast Connecticut, US. Out early (5AM) to weed before the heat. Rained overnight so already close to 100% humidity even before the sun clears the treeline. Nice moon though. Song sparrows, robin, a warbling vireo, catbird, swallows. It’s quite lovely and peaceful.
