Saturday vs Sunday commute. The highway wasn't bad either day, but the gravel road ( I have 3-4 miles depending on route, to get to pavement) was soupy and sloppy-mud, slush, ruts- from snow earlier in the week then again Saturday night and Sunday. Mix of snow (maybe some rain) with melting continues tonight and tomorrow (Monday/Tuesday) then some warmer drier days-at least until the weekend...lol #weather #Alberta #Canada #April #Sprinter #snow #commute #landscape #photography

The last few weeks have seen warm melting days, numerous snowfalls, solid freezing days- spring weather! The first few days of spring were not warm or sunny but we did have some fun clouds and pretty #frost and #light! #commute #Alberta #Canada #landscape #photography #weather

The Sphinx II (2022)

I took this shot in the high alpine meadows just south of #Jasper #Alberta, in a park that few actually visit in this mountain region. My sibling had suggested we go backpacking through this area on a weekend trip we had the opportunity to enjoy together.

This scene was without a doubt, the highlight of our hike as summited the ridge to see this sweeping valley.

Wishing all a happy and blessed season ahead (yesterday was Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn in the South). We had some springy weather earlier in the week (to at least 59C/60F) but the day itself rolled in just a few degrees above freezing (just a little below average) with some pretty fog. Rain and snow overnight and that looks about the same for the week ahead #spring #winter #sprinter #Alberta #Canada #nature #GetOutside #BorealForest

Thousands of Canadians have told Ottawa to act on nature. We need thousands more.

Canada's $2.3B nature fund expires this month. We're asking the government to renew it — and invest in ecosystems for the long term.

Be one of the thousands 👇

A supply run to town last week, before the big snow that came a couple of days later. In the last 9 days we've been as high as 10C/50F and as low as -24C/-11C, several snowfalls including one of 20-30cm, some high winds (coming again tomorrow) and some rain + melting at other times that have led to ice. In the next few days we could get up around 15C/59-it's gonna get wet, and then again icey overnight some days....

I usually take time to craft and hone and practice my Senate speeches. But yesterday I rose unprepared and impromptu to address an amendment to Bill C-12, thru the eyes of an Albertan, haunted by the official xenophobia of my province. Turns out, if you’re angry enough, you don’t need notes. youtu.be/7U4evGu-jks?si=5YNOEJ… #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli #Alberta #immigration

Since I couldn't go to work yesterday, I went for a walk in the bush- keeping an ear on the trees- with winds potentially gusting to 100km/62mi per hour, I was alert for falling branches or whole trees- a couple of times I thought-okay- time to move along!
Here's an 8 minute video featuring some of the crazy blowing snow with bonus of some cute birds in the yard eating seeds 😀

1-This is my longest video to date, around 26 min: new chainsaw, Narnia frost, melting days, chickadees, grouse, dragging logs, admiring moss +lichens.. a taste of my life here in Western Alberta, Canada. some talk, fairly gentle music and some nature sounds.
For the moment only a YT link- I'm enquiring (in replies) to see how large I can go with files on #Spectra so stay tuned.

Well another missed day of work I can't afford..lol after missing most of several weeks (I only work 2 days/week) due to car trouble. 10C/50F yesterday above freezing overnight, this morning started with rain then hail or graupel then snow with dropping temperatures and wind gusting up to 100km/h! Set off for work anyway, it wasn't too icey in the yard. Gravel road okay, just poor visibility, but the highway was pure ice under the new snow! turned around! #Alberta #winter #commute #photography

Wintry days come and go- a couple of melting days, then fresh snowfall and a return to cold, rinse and repeat.. the time of growth and flowers is still rather distant, but these days have their own beauty.. Moose tracks: they were checking Castilleja seed heads for edibility- conclusion: Nope!

The habitat in the Upper Oldman is TOO important to risk. We cannot allow for the continued destruction of Critical Habitat, especially when it’s vital to the long-term recovery of bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout.

Tell the Minister of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada to REVERSE this decision, and REVOKE the permit allowing for Critical Habitat destruction.

Danielle Smith’s address was a chilling moment that recalls some of the ugliest anti-immigration chapters of our country’s history.

This is what demagogues do: pit the public against the most vulnerable and blame them for the very crises their austerity policies have created.

Immigrants aren't to blame for Alberta's crumbling healthcare system, overcrowded classrooms, and strained social services — Danielle Smith and the UCP are.

All federal leaders must come together to condemn Smith’s politics of division and stand up for the human rights of people who are our neighbours, friends and a part of our communities.

We've had a long spell of well above average temperatures, and no new snow in weeks. All about to change with a brief (?) deep freeze and snow this week...starting tomorrow?
For me it's *always* about the light (and line, and texture!) but that may be even more true in winter when the colours are fewer and the lower sun gives dramatic light much of the day.

Ha- I saw the #SuperbOwl and didn't clue in- I mean, owls are superb so it seemed like a totally reasonable #! I wasn't thinking about the other use of those letters, cuz, why would I? lol #Birdwatching is a better sport ;)
here's a short vid I made last year when I had the luck to see Great Grey Owl several times on the farm.

It looks likely that the province of Alberta will have a referendum on whether it should secede from Canada. The group organizing the petition to trigger the referendum claims to have met with senior Trump administration officials several times, and U.S. lawmakers have claimed that Albertans would rather be part of the United States than Canada. The referendum looks likely to fail. Only 24% of Albertans support joining the U.S. But, Coda Story's Natalia Antelava argues, that isn't the whole story. "The rhetorical architecture that made Crimea possible is now being constructed around Alberta," she writes.

Look at Those Mouthparts! Grasshopper Chows Down

The media in this post is not displayed to visitors. To view it, please go to the original post.

I hope you can see some cool critters today 😀

I always see lots of grasshoppers here over the summer and some plants here and there get munched, but there is enough vegetation that the impact is not usually notable. This year there were a lot of them in my main Comfrey (Symphytum) patch- man they were really chomping the heck out of those plants! It still wasn't a big deal, since those plants are huge and vigorous and I have to chop them back majorly anyway (several times, or here and there continuously). Sometimes the grasshoppers are pretty placid and don't move much when I come near- this one on Aug 06 was too busy chowing down to worry about me- I even had the tripod set up and got quite close.

The Wolf's Paw

Often I show up early to pre-compose a shot leaving me waiting for the sun to shift and the light I wanted to reveal itself. This gives me lots of time to explore the areas around me, sometimes allowing me to stumble onto small scenes like this.

On this occasion I found pockets of air trapped in the ice, with a few pockets having broken the surface to reveal what look like a canine paw.

This year I have decided to make more trans mugs. Last year I raised money for our local gender affirming closet.

This year, I'm looking to raise money for an organization the helps trans people in Alberta, where the premier is trying to eradicate their human rights.

Does anyone know of any organizations that offer support/services for the trans community in Alberta?

Please comment below with any organizations and information you may have about them.

Sunrise on the Athabasca Jasper National Park

In the quiet hour before the world awakens, dawn slips softly over the peaks of Jasper National Park. The Athabasca River glows with reflected light, carrying the sky’s first colors in its steady, unhurried flow. Cool blues give way to warm gold and pale rose as the mountains emerge from shadow.
