I’m looking to create my own self-hosted ‘drive’ on my NAS. I’d store my files, primarily, plus photos/videos. I’d like to have easy remote access that doesn’t require too many hoops.
I’m overwhelmed by all the options out there. If you have had a good experience with any of them, I’m open to recommendations and tips. Big thanks! 😊

Today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is all about XMPP.
Snikket (snikket.org/) is an easy-to-install, and easy-to-administer, XMPP server. It is designed for families and other small groups. The apps for Android and iOS (based on Conversations, I think) are great.
Dino (dino.im/) is my desktop XMPP client of choice.
Profanity (profanity-im.github.io/) is a terminal / console XMPP client, which is incredibly convenient.
Why not have a fun festive project of setting up an XMPP-based chat server for you and your family and friends?

PSA: If you use #Nextcloud, make sure to update to the latest server and app versions. They published a bunch of CVEs.
In the past few days I’ve seen talk about RAM prices shooting up due to demand from big datacenters.
Today I read that a historic brand like Crucial - I own plenty of their hardware, including SSDs - is dropping consumer products to focus on gear for those same datacenters.
The result (or maybe the intention?) is to push people away from self hosting, undermine the OwnYourData idea and make everyone depend on huge datacenters for life.
So much for owning your data.
So much for decentralisation.
Because taking down one giant datacenter is far easier than taking down thousands or millions of individual nodes.
Friends and colleagues, don’t trade your freedom for a bit of convenience. Once you give it away, getting it back is very hard.

Spent some downtime this holiday weekend setting up an old #RaspberryPi 3B+ as a revese proxy server between my ISP's router and potentially multiple upstream servers at home. Currently everything was going to my #YunoHost VM, but I wanted the option to run other stuff outside of that ecosystem that can still be exposed to the internet.
Configuration was done through #ansible which wasn't as painful as times I've tried using it in the past.

Im #Homelab nutze ich unattended-upgrades, um das Linux in einem LXC aktuell zu halten. Jetzt ist es doch mal umgefallen und #paperless_ngx hat seinen Dienst eingestellt.
Ist aber irgendwas mit der aktuellen Version von Docker, wenn diese in einem LXC Container läuft.

So in my case from #Lemmy to xxx (I'm not sure yet what it will be, maybe #Friendica). Because if the instance keys no longer match, communication will be rejected.
Mastodon introduced the self-destruct command for this, but Lemmy doesn't have anything like that.

#AskFedi: If I was looking for "bulk storage" for a home lab setup, what would I go for?
I feel like a NAS, probably with HDDs, would be my go-to. But what to go for here? I think I want a RAID setup (in addition to (offsite) backups), something that is not too large (e.g. fit in a kallax), loud or power hungry, and not a locked down thing.
I might also host some services which need databases, so maybe SSDs as well...

My minio instance has very basic needs and continues to chug along, but they've clearly made every effort to do away with the community version and I need to figure out a plan before I'm stuck.

So I found a 4 GB RAM / 40 GB storage VPS for just USD 10.99/year (!) recently.
It's from George Datacenter, which I had never heard about before. I looked it up and found a few negative reviews but nothing that suggested it was an actual scam, so I decided to give it a try considering the absurdly low price and the fact the complaints were all from a long time ago.
So far it's been smooth. Apparently you can load custom ISOs (I haven't tried, but the UI is there) and there is toggleable VNC access.
I'm curious if anyone has any experience to share about this provider?

Ultimamente cercavo una applicazione per gestire la mia libreria di PDF con manuali per TTRPG. Volevo qualcosa che mi permettesse anche di leggere il pdf e tenere traccia dell'avanzamento tra vari device.
Alla fine ho scelto kavita, che ha un po' tutto (compresi client iOS e android compatibili)
Unica pecca: sto ancora cercando di capire l'algoritmo di raggruppamento dei pdf.

Start small: setup file/photo sync (@nextcloud), calendars and contacts and gradually start adding data from old backups once you feel comfortable.
