If you move your Mastodon account to a different server, you can still keep your existing followers and follows. (It's a bit like switching your phone provider, you can still call your friends even after the switch.)

If you're considering switching servers and looking for a place to go, there's an easy-to-use list of good reliable servers at:

➡️ fedi.garden

If you have decided which server to go to, there's a step-by-step transfer guide at:

Mastodon and the wider Fediverse aren't owned by any single person or organisation. Ownership is spread across thousands of totally independent servers, and they do not depend on any central infrastructure of any kind.

For a more detailed look at the ownership of Mastodon and the Fediverse, have a look at this guide:

Here is a list of reasons why it's so important to decentralise ownership like this:

Do you want your Mastodon posts to self-delete after a certain time limit? Mastodon has an option for this, you can find out more about it in this guide:

➡️ fedi.tips/deleting-posts-autom…

This feature is off by default. It only deletes posts if you choose to switch on the feature.

This feature also includes options for automatically deleting some posts and keeping others. More details in the guide.

#NeuHier?

#Mastodon #Fediverse #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier? Lass dich nicht von fremden Begriffen abschrecken. Boost bedeutet teilen. CW bedeutet Inhaltswarnung.

#Mastodon #Fediverse #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier?

#Mastodon #Fediverse #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier? Folge zuerst einigen Menschen, bevor du deinen ersten Beitrag veröffentlichst.

#Mastodon #Fediverse #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier? Hab Geduld.

#Mastodon #Fediverse #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier?

#Mastodon #Fediverse #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier? Nutze Hashtags in deinen Beiträgen.

#Mastodon #Fediverse #Hashtags #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier? Mach dir keinen Stress wegen deiner Instanz.

#Mastodon #Fediverse #FediTips #NeuHier #EinfacheSprache

#NeuHier?

⚠️ DO NOT USE FLASHING IMAGES OR FLASHING EMOJI. Flashing lights can cause seizures and physical danger to people with photosensitive epilepsy. There's more info about this in relation to Mastodon and the wider Fediverse at:

How do a.gup.pe #groups actually work?

I keep joining groups that look active and then suddenly become inactive/dead. I don't understand why this happens and how to find actually active groups

You can control who sees your post or reply by choosing a visibility setting for it:

"Public" - Everyone can see it
"Quiet Public (aka Unlisted)" - Everyone can see it, but it doesn't show up in searches, hashtag follows or trends
"Followers Only" - Only your followers can see it
"Mentions (aka Private Mentions or DM)" - Only accounts you mention in the post can see it

Lots more info and questions answered in this guide:

Pixelfed users, your DMs are closed to strangers by default.

If you would like to receive DMs from people you don't follow, you need to adjust your settings:

1. Log into your account on your Pixelfed server’s website
2. Go to "Account Settings"
3. Go to "Privacy"
4. Tick the box marked "Receive Direct Messages from anyone"
5. Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen

If you change your mind, repeat the process but untick the box instead.

Your server will be safer if your admin activates a feature called "Authorized Fetch" (also known as "Secure Mode"). It helps protect your server's members from abusive servers by making defederation more effective.

There's lots more info about it in this guide, including instructions on how your server admin can activate it:

If you see something problematic which has potentially broken your server's rules, you can report it by clicking ⋯ on the post and then selecting "Report".

It's really important to include a reason for the report and to have selected a post giving an example of the problem, so that the admin can get an idea of why it's been reported.

Two gender-related #FediTips:

1. The first time you interact with someone or say something about their post, it's worth checking their profile to see if they've shared their pronouns. I've seen a slew of misgenderings of trans and enby people in replies recently, all of which were preventable.

2. If you are comfortable revealing this about yourself, it's a great idea to share your own pronouns in your bio, ESPECIALLY if you feel like you don't "need" to. Normalize sharing pronouns!

Do you want to find a nice server to sign up on, or to move your account to? You might want to check out my other website:

Anyone know of a masto bot or service that resembles the remind me feature on Reddit? For example, you find a thread that you want to check back in on later, this bot would notify you at some later date with a reminder to check that post/thread.

@FediTips do you know of anything like this?

500 characters can be a brutal limit. You have a thought, you start writing, and suddenly you are two sentences short. So you trim, rephrase, throw out important nuance. Or you cut the post up by hand and post it as a thread, which is annoying and easy to mess up. FediSuite splits your longer texts automatically into clean threads, at paragraph, sentence or word boundaries, with a preview, in the order you actually want to see. You write freely, the tool takes care of the splitting.

Be really careful when blocking servers (aka "domains") on Mastodon. If you block an entire server, this will also remove all your follows and followers on that server.

If you have accidentally blocked a server and you wish you hadn't blocked it, here's a guide for what to do next:

➡️ fedi.tips/help-ive-accidentall…

Obviously this isn't ideal, and it's better not to accidentally block a server, but hopefully this provides some kind of way back if the worst happens.

Also kürzen, umformulieren, wichtige Nuancen rauskippen.

What annoyed me for a long time about posting across Mastodon, Pixelfed and PeerTube: every platform has its own character limits, its own visibility options, its own rules for media and alt text. You start typing, get cut off, start over. That is exactly what the FediSuite composer is for. It knows which account you are currently writing on, counts characters live, actively prompts for alt text and post language, knows the visibility options of each platform and stops you from sending a post that would not go through there in the first place.

Quick clarification upfront, because I get asked this a lot: FediSuite is not a new Mastodon client. Reading, following and replying still happen in your usual apps. What FediSuite takes care of is everything around that, which gets tedious once you are actually active. You write your posts in a central composer, schedule them, keep an eye on posts and stats across all your accounts, and afterwards see in a dashboard what actually happened. Publishing and analytics in one place, reading stays where it is.
