The hardest part of self-hosting email isn't the setup — it's deliverability.

You need: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, rDNS, a clean IP, and patience. Even then, Gmail might decide your mail is spam.

Honest take: self-host everything except email unless you really know what you're doing.

Very quietly I have transitioned substantially all of my #homelab services to exclusively #ipv6 over the past few days.

No drama. No performance regressions. Just a lot more flexible and resilient.

I think the next big-ish project is upgrading all of the #esphome devices and enabling ipv6.

We've just released Continuwuity v0.5.5. Continuwuity is a chat server for communities that speaks Matrix - and as you can probably guess we've exploded in popularity over the past week or two. The amount of people in our community rooms doubled!

This release is mostly about bugfixes, but there are two things to get excited about. The first is that the last blocker for calling in the Element X mobile apps has been squished! If you've set up the prerequisite service, you can now make calls from your phone.

The other is that we've greatly improved the first run experience - registering a first account is easier, and contexual help is presented where possible.

I would heavily encourage reading the changelog, and upgrading. Again, welcome to all of our new community members!

Email is a good idea to solve for ourselves - even as a sentiment or practical / political action - but I need also somewhere I can go when I get stuck which will for sure happen (half-way through maybe) and past just my sentiment phase I'd need to go to the finish with someone.

Got an AS number and IPv6 /48 via RIPE, set up a FreeBSD BGP router with FRR, two upstreams, and built GRE/GIF tunnels ti bring my own globally routable addresses to servers at different providers.

The interesting part: dual-FIB policy routing lets FreeBSD jails speak from both provider and BGP addresses simultaneously.

One thing I dislike in UX on many apps relying on services: full url requirements.

App connects over http(s) to known port. But you have to give "some.server.name:PORTNUMBER" each time.

When "some.server.name" should be enough.
