The hardest part of self-hosting email isn't the setup — it's deliverability.

You need: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, rDNS, a clean IP, and patience. Even then, Gmail might decide your mail is spam.

Honest take: self-host everything except email unless you really know what you're doing.

Zwischendurch gibt es auch mal gute Nachrichten:
Der auch sonst sehr empfehlenswerte Mail-Provider Posteo verdoppelt einfach so das zur Verfügung gestellte Speichervolumen von 2GB auf 4GB - weiterhin für 1€ pro Monat.
Als Grund wird die fleißige Nutzung des Lösch-Tools genannt, mit dem man ohne großen Aufwand sein Postfach aufräumen kann.
(Ich habe seit weit mehr als 10 Jahren dort mein Postfach.)

Which email service (not self hosted for 2 reasons, effort, and deny-listing) do you recommend for own domain addresses, that has IMAP access and is not US nor EU/UK (not crazy about Russia either, but perhaps distributing my data over different dictatorships is not the worst idea, they will never work together to get the full picture)?

I currently use Zoho, the free one, no IMAP, just web mail, no PGP, so I encrypt a text file with what I would normally write in the email body and attach, but that makes communication with non-IT people difficult. Now I want something I can simply use in Thunderbird and I am willing to pay.

I'm not sure if the easy 1-click 'docker container' style email services recently get around blocks or if has these same problems.

But #email #selfhost I think is needed... and the way to avoid everything else that grows bad problems from google.

I think it's getting better but is their a total working solution ? (not just install and see how it goes until I-reach-the-same-problems-down-the-line?)

What I need is an imap access, no app lock-in, and a good privacy policy, preferably with server located in the EU.

I am evaluating @soverin and @eclipso so far, with the latter lokking a bit more feature full but suspiciously less pricy.

Do you have any experience with any of those services? Have you any suggestion about them or other services I may look into?

Email is a good idea to solve for ourselves - even as a sentiment or practical / political action - but I need also somewhere I can go when I get stuck which will for sure happen (half-way through maybe) and past just my sentiment phase I'd need to go to the finish with someone.

I've had the same free email for exactly 20-years, but over the last year it's become manipulative and intrusive while increasingly failing to filter spam.

My entire online life is linked to this email, now it might go sideways.

Are there proven, dependable, and hopefully free, services that do better, or is this a universal problem?

I don't want to bounce from one to another, constantly having to update sites. I'm also desperate to keep expenses down.

Endlich! Mit etwa einem halben Jahr Verspätung habe ich eine aktualisierte Mailserveranleitung für Debian Trixie veröffentlicht.

War wieder eine Mords Arbeit und ich hoffe, es hilft dem ein oder anderen 😀 Getestet ist es natürlich auch, allerdings derzeit nur partiell. Also nicht von Grund auf, sondern nur die Deltas zur alten Anleitung. Bei Gelegenheit teste ich auch nochmal vollständig "from scratch".

Mutige dürfen sie also gerne schon ausprobieren 😀

But I don't understand why I have to pay 2 1/2 the price to be able to do email import? I'm figuring it's something I'd do a couple of times during initial setup and never again.

Can I simply pay for the Legend/Advanced account for one month, do the import and then downgrade my account?

I created an account while on VPN and was told they needed to manually approve my account because people try to abuse their system using VPN.

Totally understand that. I was patient. Days later they denied me. Not with a notification, but by simply closing the account. Never even got to use it.

Mails können out of the blue nicht mehr an einige Empfänger zugestellt werden, in den Bounces steht was von DMARC-Fehlern. Alle Online-Tools sagen: "Dein DMARC ist OK"

Natürlich habe ich einen SPF-Record. Und da rührige Abteilungen habe, die dauernd irgendwelche Dienstleister anschleppen, muß der ständig um neue Includes erweitert werden, der ist schon jetzt komplett kaum noch lesbar.
Es muß also ein weiterer Dienstleister inkludiert werden. Kein Ding, einfach den Record erweitern: iinclude:spf.example.com Ja, ihr seht es sofort, ich habe es nicht gesehen. Das macht sofort den SPF ungültig, und damit natürlich auch DMARC.
Möchte jemand ein i kaufen?

I self-host my own e-mail servers for ~25 years now. Just finished he migration to a new system today.

- OS: FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE
- MTA: Postfix 3.10
- IMAP: Dovecot 2.3
- Filter: Rspamd 3.14

I used Imapsync to migrate the content of my Mailboxes from the old to the new system. Worked absolutely fine.

Having the E-Mail Jail and the mailbox data on an encrypted ZFS dataset (AES256) that's manually unlocked with my passphrase after rebooting the system. Backups are done via ZFS send/recv to by backup server (-w for raw send to ensure, data is encrypted at rest)

- SPF: ✅
- DKIM Signing: ✅
- DMARC Reporting: ✅
- E-Mail delivery to major providers: ✅
- IPv6 working and actually being used: ✅

All working perfectly well. In about a week, I'll decomission the old Debian based system, that I used since 2017!
