I am impressed by how lightweight #XMPP is. Most of time, I am not able to open even simple websites on my mobile data while in underground #Delhi metro, but XMPP messages go through immediately.
On a related note, I remember having internet issues in my previous phone a couple of years ago after switching to Lineage OS. Matrix, websites etc. didn't use to work. But XMPP messages used to go through fine.
A recent security audit of #Conversations_im¹ found that wildcard certificate handling didn’t fully comply with the spec.
Conversations was accepting *.a.example for c.b.a.example, even though wildcards are only meant to match a single label.
This issue has been fixed in version 2.18.0, now live on Google Play.

I really like using #XMPP, but the XMPP fans claiming "Signal isn't secure because it's centralised" are annoying.
It's like saying "Potatoes are not vegetables because they contain starch, just like noodles". It makes NO sense to say that.
Centralised services can be very secure, they just have different issues. Censorship could occur, for example, also downtimes.
And that coming from people often claiming that verifying fingerprints is "unnecessary" because "XMPP is secure".

Can't find a way to do this on Conversations IM either.

Al final conseguí montar el servidor XMPP en casa. Les he creado a mi novia y familia una cuenta y llevamos una semana usándolo.
Es una maravilla y es muy divertido no depender de empresas para mandar mensajitos a mis familiares.
El día que más he abierto Whatsapp esta semana ha sido el jueves y lo he usado 6 minutos, se siente muy bien.

@feld another point people miss: unlike on #Signal, #WhatsApp, #Telegram, etc where there is a central server watching all the social graphs of the whole network, in #DeltaChat and other decentralized platforms like #XMPP what a server can see is pretty limited and fragmented, We started talking about activists btw, and having the freedom to choose a server instead a central server potentially collaborating with your enemy is a killer feature

Vor ein paar Jahren hätte ich Dir von #Jabber/#XMPP abgeraten, weil große Gruppen (mehr als ein paar hundert Teilnehmende) eine Performance-Katastrophe waren. Das Problem ist wohl mittlerweile gelöst. In einer Gruppe mit 1256 Kontakten in diesem Moment online sehe ich keine Probleme. Kann man selbsthosten oder Du gehst auf einen Server Deines Vertrauens:

Over a year ago, I wrote ”A month using XMPP (using Snikket) for every call and chat”.
For something like 15 months now, Sandra and I have used XMPP via @snikket_im for probably 99.9% of our calls, messages, and video chats, running on an Intel NUC.
We both use the Snikket mobile app, and I also use @dino and @profanity in Linux.
Perhaps a fun holiday / weekend project, if you want family-friendly, self-hosted, #E2EE communications?
