On March 26, 1746, nine bandits raided the farmstead and robbed Abbot Gregorio Gadaleta of a large sum of money (about 2,000 ducats). Three years later, in 1749, the three leaders of the gang (Marco Cariati, Angelo Arcieri, and Carmine Piturro) were captured, hanged from the surrounding olive trees, and quartered. Their remains were displayed at the site as a warning. This event fueled numerous urban legends about alleged sightings of ghosts and the spirits of the brigands around the farmhouse.

-A famous clash took place in April 1861 at Masseria Quinto between Major Giuseppe d’Errico and the band of brigands led by Pasquale Domenico Romano. Major d’Errico, through an ambush, managed to thwart a planned meeting between Romano’s band and that of Carmine Crocco. The men who perished in that ambush were thrown into a well, still known today as the “Brigands’ Well.”-

Postcards from Gravina in Puglia

On my way home from my latest ride, I stopped in Gravina in Puglia. I’ve passed through there several times on my rides, but there’s never enough time to wander around and take pics in the town, and, as some of you may have already guessed, my interest is mainly focused on old rural buildings. It’s a town rich in history, with numerous underground chambers from various historical periods carved into the tuff rock. The historic center, nestled against the canyon, is very picturesque. It has already served as a movie location for various movies, such as - 007 No Time to Die (2021) - , and is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Really pleasant city #Kopenhagen. Cycling friendly, all though you've to watch cars from your left if the traffic lights goes green, which is unusual in The Netherlands. Also some traffic lights in front of crosswalks doesn't always make sense to me. Traffic lights for bikes seems to turn green faster then in The Netherlands (in #Groningen you've to wait unfairly long sometimes compared with cars). Very nice bridges for cyclists, somehow they give a very nice (social) vibe. Less 'trafic furniture' then in The Netherlands (positive). No coloured bikelanes (less safe, less noisy?). People have a sign when they stop cycling, interesting, socially nice, but not sure if it is that useful actually. I mostly point downwards to the right if I stop unexpectedly, with hand open.

When it comes to museums, other capital cities have more to offer probably, but I could have missed something.

My latest bike ride took me beyond the borders of my region. Kilometers under the sun (yes, the sun is still beating down here) through the hills. So I decided to head to Montemilone, a small village perched on top of a hill, to stock up on water and enjoy my packed lunch in the cool shade. Unfortunately, little remains of the old village. Almost all of the original structures have been replaced by buildings from the first half of the 20th century or later.

Had to take a days holiday because numbers, took a scenic ride, starting with a pretty steep climb, then a several mile long coast past woods and hills, and finally a stop at a river where I saw some spider webs on a bridge (no spiders) before coming home via a well maintained cycle path. Just a really nice time. Also got some other stuff sorted but like, definitely going to take that route again, the long mostly gentle hill descent zoomy was like flying 😀
