When I opened up Lemmy this morning I could not believe my eyes. The top story was a headline from Forbes stating:
« ‘Open Source And Ethical’ TikTok, WhatsApp And Instagram Alternatives Could Transform Social Media ».

The article mostly focused on #Pixelfed and did a fairly good job explaining how #ActivityPub works. But they spelled #Mastodon « Mastadon » over and over again with no links to it. Yikes.

Ich möchte verstehen, warum sich gute Leute wie Cory Doctorow zu der 30-Millionen-Dollar-Geldsammlung "Free Our Feeds" zusammengeschlossen haben. Damit wollen sie Bluesky dezentralisieren und deren AT-Protokoll stärken, vor allem aber einen zukünftigen Zugriff und Kontrolle durch reiche Dritte verhindern. Für uns hier im Fediverse mit dem Flaggschiff Mastodon und dem W3C-Protokoll ActivityPub muss es unverständlich sein, warum diese Initiative etwas bei Bluesky erreichen will, was es hier schon längst gibt: Dezentralität und ein offenes Protokoll.

Um das zu verstehen, habe ich mir zwei Artikel von Cory Doctorow angeschaut, die er in den letzten Tagen veröffentlicht hat:

Companies should follow the law, right?

If so, then #ActivityPub is better than #ATproto (and other platforms) for #FreeSpeech. The structure of #bluesky requires the relay be able to block stuff like CSAM but the govt where the relay is located could force whoever is running it to use this capacity to block anything. The entire network would be unable to access whatever that govt decided, no matter the locations of the people who posted the content or those who want to see it. #SocialWeb

We make good use of Mastodon’s interoperability with WordPress. When we recently moved our Vivaldi Tips (@tips) blog from vivaldi.net to vivaldi.com to start translating the tips, we noticed that things were a little off on the Mastodon side. Luckily we have the amazing @thomasp in our team, who ironed out every single issue we found.

One of the problems we had was the ActivityPub plugin not detecting the language tags our translation plugin (WPML) added to the posts on WordPress. Language tags allow people on Mastodon to subscribe to posts only in the languages they can read and use the translation feature, so this was an important issue for us to solve. Eigentlich wollte ich mich zu diesem Thema nicht äußern, weil es Menschen gibt, die es meiner Meinung nach nicht Wert sind, dass man sich über diese unterhält, diskutiert oder deren geistigen Dünnschiss teilt.

Aber wieso schreibe ich dann doch etwas über diesen Typen? Nun, ich finde, dass durch die Aktion bzw. Aussage von Musk bzgl. Wikipedia und der Fediverse sehr deutlich gezeigt wird, wie gut und wichtig es ist, dass es das freie Fediverse in seiner dezentralen Form gibt. Und besser beschreiben wie es @Dr. Michael Blume in seinem Artikel auf spektrum.de macht, kann man es nicht. Ein wirklich sehr lesenswerter Artikel, der von mir eine absolute Leseempfehlung bekommt.

As many users have asked for it, there is now an option to make the number of followed and following accounts public (still disabled by default). These are only the numbers; the lists themselves are never published.

Some fixes to blocked instances code (posts from them were sometimes shown).

Fixed non-appearing buttons Approve and Discard if the account requesting a follow were being followed.

Added a new user option to disable automatic follow confirmations (follow requests must be manually approved from the people page).

The search box also searches for accounts (via webfinger).

New command-line action import_list, to import a Mastodon list in CSV format (so that Mastodon Follow Packs can be directly used).

New command-line action import_block_list, to import a Mastodon list of accounts to be blocked in CSV format.

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.64 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes (mostly bugfixes):

Some tweaks for better integration with bsky.brid.gy (the BlueSky bridge by brid.gy).

A corner case bug in the media proxying code has been fixed.

Hashtags can now include underscores.

The server now creates a pidfile inside the data directory.

Mastodon API: fixed a crash in the notification code, fixed autocapitalization in the OAuth login field (contributed by fkooman).
