A question to the Fediverse about that old favourite topic: federation!

I wrote this post on Pixelfed the other day: pixey.org/p/bammerlaan/9780635…

If I look at it through Mastodon, from this account, I think I see all of the replies. Among others, there's one from someone asking for details about zips and buttons, and someone asking where I got the sewing pattern. I replied to both of them using my Mastodon account. I then replied to one of my own replies with photos and more information.

If I look at the post from Pixelfed, though, I only see two replies. My first replies to them are visible, but not the follow-up reply with more pictures.

If I look at the original post of the person asking for the pattern (sh.itjust.works/comment/261642…) I notice that my reply to them isn't even shown. Looking at the post from Mbin, which I use, I also don't see all of the replies: thebrainbin.org/m/sewing@lemmy…

This is a problem, I'd say. It makes the Fediverse seem emptier than it is, let alone the fact that my reply doesn't seem to be visible even to the person I'm directly replying to. What's going on and what can be done to fix this?

Just finished my FreeSewing Crux Climbing pants. I first made a muslin, a first for me, just to see where the problem areas were and to reduce the amount of mistakes on the fancy pink fabric.

I also tried dying the muslin using saved avocado pits and shells, which worked out pretty well. I also tried out some of my Bernina 930's decorative stitches on the muslin. I figured just the topstitching was fancy enough for the pink denim.

Both feature these nice articulated knees and a gusset, a very interesting part of these. The fly of the muslin isn't perfect on the inside, but that's on the inside so 🤷

Whenever someone announces to "bring" something "to the Fediverse", chances are that Friendica has actually had it since 2010, for five and a half years longer than Mastodon has been around.

For example, just about everyone on Mastodon is fully convinced that Eugen Rochko has brought quote-posts to the Fediverse this year. That's because next to nobody on Mastodon knows that Friendica has been able to quote-post practically everything in the Fediverse, including Mastodon toots, for 15 years now.

And if Friendica doesn't have it, chances are still that Hubzilla has it, and that Hubzilla has probably had it for longer than Mastodon has been around, too.

For example, private messages that are actually private. Mastodon doesn't have them because the "privacy" of Mastodon DMs is only "guaranteed" by limiting whom a DM is sent to. Hubzilla does have them and has had them since 2012, since it was still named Red. How? Because Hubzilla also limits who is permitted to see a DM.

Oh, and Hubzilla even offers optional encryption on top of that.

Or how about server-independent identity? Everyone still waiting for Bluesky to finally be the pioneer who invents this and implements it for the first time? LOL! Once again, Hubzilla has had this since 2012. Not a vague concept, not an unstable proof-of-concept, but daily-driven by production-grade channels on production-grade servers. (streams) has it, too, inherited from Hubzilla through a whole number of forks. Forte has it, too, and Forte is the first and, so far, only Fediverse server software that uses ActivityPub for nomadic identity.

Now I'm waiting for someone to announce that something will "bring" actual groups "to the Fediverse". A feature that was actually introduced to the Fediverse by StatusNet in 2008, and that's also available on Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte. Not to mention that the very principle of the Threadiverse (Lemmy, the remains of /kbin, Mbin, PieFed) is based on groups.

This is what happens when you think that the feature set of the whole Fediverse is the feature set of Mastodon and maybe Pixelfed because that's all you know.

Speaking of Mastodon: Just because it's being "brought to the Fediverse", doesn't mean it'll be adopted by Mastodon.

When the Open Social Web Hybridizes: Raccoon for Friendica is a new app... Mastodon. And it even has a little Lemmy in it! That's why the Free Software + Fediverse duo is such a valuable resource.

Raccoon 1.0 was finally released for Android in recent days, a rather innovative client originally created for #Friendica, but which has now become one of the most innovative apps for the user experience on #Mastodon. The app is available for Android (already on the Play Store and Izzidroid, and will soon be available on F-Droid), but a #Debian package has also been released. An iOS version remains to be seen for its success.

The app introduces some very important innovations to the federated app landscape.

1. Navigate the Fediverse from an app, even without creating an account

Raccoon is the only app that lets you browse the Fediverse even without an account. When you install it, you can select any Friendica or Mastodon instance and "leverage" its local public and federated timelines. This way, users can explore multiple instances before choosing which one to open an account on. Of course, even after adding an account (the app manages multiple accounts), you can browse the timelines of servers other than the one you signed up to.

2. "Browse through" messages: "swipe" navigation

Unlike all other social apps (both those for the Fediverse and those for commercial social networks), #RaccoonForFriendica lets you open a post in your timeline and continue browsing through previous and next posts by simply swiping left and right.
This is a truly interesting ergonomic innovation.

3. Finally a formatting bar in social apps

Since the app was created for Friendica, it features a built-in formatting toolbar reminiscent of Lemmy clients (in fact, the developer @janTeko first experimented with app development with a Lemmy app). The formatting toolbar can also be used for Mastodon instances running the Glitch-soc fork, such as infosec.exchange, tech.lgbt, and my poliversity.it instance, which was the one the developer experimented with.

In addition to being more immediate, writing formatted posts is also made easier by a "preview" function that helps avoid errors in Markdown or BBCode coding.

4. Finally, Mastodon users will be able to enjoy Fediverse groups too.

As you may know, Mastodon doesn't support the display of group posts. Even if you select a group, you'll still see a single timeline where top posts alternate with replies. Searching for a thread on Mastodon is therefore very complicated, but the #Raccoon developer has found a way to enable "topic" viewing across all accounts that are "activitypub groups," be they #Lemmy, #NodeBB, Piefed, Mbin, Peertube, Wordpress, Mobilizon, Flipboard, etc.
This idea also came about thanks to the fact that the developer had previously tried his hand at developing an app for Lemmy and was able to experiment with the formatting bars and display of Lemmy "communities," which are nothing other than "#activitypub groups."

5. Other interesting features

Among other features, you can

• view the HTML code of messages;
• send scheduled posts;
• fully configure the interface;
• support for writing in HTML, useful both for Mastodon Glitch-soc and for writing WordPress posts by integrating the plugin "Activitypub for Wordpress" from @pfefferle and the "Enable Mastodon App" plugin from @alex
• integrate translation libraries

6. What's still missing?

The app features all the features found in most other Mastodon apps, except one: the correct handling of Mastodon posts that quote other posts. These are still displayed in a fairly primitive way. The developer is trying to decide whether to adapt to Mastodon specifications or reinterpret the feature in a more personalized way.
It must be said that, unfortunately, the implementation of quoted messages (already present in Friendica for ages) was implemented by Mastodon very late, only in recent months, and in a very "personal" way that many other software developers did not appreciate.

7. Raccoon is an app that will benefit users who already use Mastodon but also those who have never "tried" the Fediverse

This app has been under development for almost two years, and the beta version is just over a year old. However, version 1.0 has resolved all previously encountered issues.
Based on user feedback, the developer will evaluate whether to create an iOS version and even a Windows version.
Anyone who wishes to allow reporting of application errors can enable anonymous crash reports.

Ich frage mich mittlerweile des öfteren, ob es denn wirklich so schlimm ist, mehrere Fediverse Accounts zu nutzen. Fürs schnelle posten oder Bilder teilen unterwegs, bleibt #Mastodon - für mich - unschlagbar. Dort mit anderen zu schreiben fühlt sich auch einfach flüssig und sauber an. Für ausgiebige Funktionalität und vielen Extras ist die #Misskey Reihe super. Für gezieltes Foto teilen hat mir #Pixelfed sehr gut gefallen. Ich kann mir durchaus vorstellen, dass kategorisierte Kommunikation mittels #Lemmy gut funktioniert.

Es gibt weder eine App, noch einen Dienst, der alles irgendwie kombiniert oder gezielt zugänglich macht, wobei alle Plattformen über das selbe Protokoll miteinander kommunizieren (neben ein paar Kleinigkeiten).

Ich spreche hier nicht nur vom Posts erstellen. Ich war bei Pixelfed fasziniert davon, wie viele coole Bilder ich in der Timeline finden konnte, während es hier gerade auf Sharkey etwas mau aussieht. Ja, man kann sich hier bei Sharkey natürlich alles so einrichten, damit man mittels Antennen eine Bilder Timeline bekommt, doch die User Experience diesbezüglich ist bei Pixelfed halt einfach besser.

Ich sehe mich mehr darin, mittels Mastodon oder Pixelfed Bilder vom Alltag zu teilen, als über Sharkey.

Und jetzt frage ich mich, ob das wirklich nur ein UI Ding ist. Hat jemand Meinungen dazu?

Wenn es eine Sharkey-kompatible App gäbe, welche einlädt schnell ein Foto zu machen, hätte ich dann einen anderen Eindruck bezüglich des Themas?

Ich mit meinen eher kleinen und ziemlich überschaubaren Follower-Zahlen habe auf einen einzigen Beitrag insgesamt 265 Reaktionen bekommen. Likes, Sterne, Boosts, Emojis, Antworten. Und das alles in gerade mal ungefähr acht Stunden.

Vielleicht fühlt sich das Fediverse manchmal leiser an als andere Netzwerke. Aber wenn ein Thema Menschen wirklich anspricht, dann entstehen dort immer echte Gespräche und echter Diskurs. Manchmal frage ich mich, ob ich im Fediverse überhaupt noch eine Reichweite habe. Nicht im Sinne von Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie oder irgendwelchen Zahlen, sondern ganz banal als Teil einer #Unterhaltung.

Für mich war das Fediverse immer ein Ort für Gespräche. #Menschen teilen Gedanken, andere reagieren darauf, man widerspricht, ergänzt, lacht gemeinsam oder denkt weiter. Genau dafür schreibe ich dort.

Früher, als das #Fediverse noch aus ein paar Dutzend Servern bestand und vielleicht einige Zehntausend aktive Menschen hatte, war das einfacher. Es gab deutlich weniger Beiträge, weniger Kommentare und man ging in der Masse nicht so schnell unter.

Heute ist das anders. Mehr Menschen, mehr Inhalte, mehr Geschwindigkeit. Das ist einerseits schön, weil das Netzwerk gewachsen ist. Andererseits fühlt es sich manchmal so an, als würde man alleine in einem Raum sprechen und alles, was man dort hört, sind andere Leute, die ihre eigenen Themen ebenfalls in den Raum hineinsprechen.

Deshalb ist das hier ein kleines Plädoyer für den Like-Button, den Stern, den Daumen nach oben oder wie auch immer eure Plattform das nennt. Nicht als Zustimmung und auch nicht als Wettbewerb oder Eitelkeit, sondern einfach als kleines Zeichen: „Ich habe deinen Beitrag gesehen. Das ist ein interessanter Beitrag zum Diskurs.“

Man muss nicht immer einer Meinung sein. Aber gerade auf Plattformen wie #Friendica oder #Mastodon kann so eine kleine Reaktion den Unterschied machen zwischen „Ich rede ins Leere“ und „Da draußen hört jemand zu“.

Das Fediverse verstehen: Wie ActivityPub soziale Netzwerke neu denkt

In den letzten Jahren taucht immer häufiger ein Begriff auf, wenn es um alternative soziale Netzwerke geht: Fediverse. Doch was steckt dahinter? Wie funktioniert das zugrunde liegende Protokoll ActivityPub – und welche Plattformen gehören eigentlich dazu?

Was ist das Fediverse?

Das Wort „Fediverse“ setzt sich aus Federation (Föderation) und Universe zusammen. Gemeint ist ein Netzwerk aus vielen unabhängigen Servern (Instanzen), die miteinander kommunizieren können.

Im Gegensatz zu klassischen sozialen Netzwerken wie Facebook oder X (Twitter), die zentral betrieben werden, ist das Fediverse dezentral organisiert:

Jeder kann einen eigenen Server betreiben
Jede Instanz hat eigene Regeln und Moderation
Nutzer können instanzübergreifend miteinander interagieren

Das Ergebnis ist ein offenes, vernetztes Ökosystem statt einer einzelnen Plattform.

Das Herzstück: Wie ActivityPub funktioniert

ActivityPub ist ein offener Standard (W3C), der definiert, wie Server im Fediverse miteinander kommunizieren.

Im Kern basiert ActivityPub auf zwei Konzepten:

1. Akteure (Actors)

Jeder Nutzer, jede Gruppe oder auch ein Bot ist ein sogenannter Actor.

Das Ganze passiert über HTTP und JSON – technisch ähnlich wie moderne Web-APIs.

Inbox & Outbox Prinzip

ActivityPub nutzt ein klares Kommunikationsmodell:

Outbox: Hier sendet ein Nutzer seine Aktivitäten
Inbox: Hier empfängt ein Nutzer Aktivitäten anderer

Jeder Server verwaltet diese Strukturen und verteilt Inhalte an andere Server.

We have a five-class Fediverse nowadays.

First class: Mastodon. It's what everyone knows (everyone outside of Lemmy at least). It's what more Mastodon users than not take for the one and only Fediverse and ActivityPub gold standard (while literally nobody outside of Mastodon does, go figure). And it's the only Fediverse server application which many Fedizens take for the entire Fediverse. (Lemmings don't refer to Lemmy as the Fediverse, although many are still completely unaware that Lemmy is connected to anything else.)

Second class: the stuff that looks like add-ons glued onto Mastodon to enhance Mastodon. Pixelfed, an Instagram clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. PeerTube, a YouTube clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. Loops, a TikTok clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. WordPress, a blogging engine and content management system eventually glued to the Twitter clone. I guess you get the idea.

It's only up to the second class that Fediverse server software is generally recognised and accepted from the usual Mastodon-centric point of view.

Third class: other halfway well-known "clones" of or replacements for corporate online platforms that do not look like they're glued onto Mastodon as add-ons. This is limited to the Threadiverse (Lemmy, what's left of /kbin, Mbin, PieFed) as Reddit replacements and Friendica as "the" Facebook replacement.

Fourth class: anything that doesn't fall into the first three classes, but that has enough publicity. Like Bonfire and WriteFreely. Also, minimalist stuff for self-hosters like GoToSocial and snac. Hubzilla is ever so barely teetering on this class, if at all.

Basically, it's only up to the fourth class that Fediverse server software is known at all.

Finally, fifth class: the whole rest. I mean, why is Mastodon known as "the" Twitter alternative in the Fediverse if there are loads of others that are better, more powerful, sometimes even closer to Twitter in certain features? Why is Friendica known as "the" Facebook alternative in the Fediverse if Friendica's own creator has built a whole family tree of successors that outclass Friendica in various ways?

Eigentlich habe ich schon einige Zeit lang propagiert das man im Fediverse außerhalb von Lemmy für Gruppen die Lemmy Communities nutzen soll. Zum einen weil das Lemmy besser ins Fediverse einbindet, zum anderen da erst das den Austausch zwischen Nutzern des von Lemmy und Nutzern anderer Plattformen im Fediverse möglich macht.

Nun jedoch lässt mich eine Sache an dieser Strategie zweifeln. Ich habe einen Beitrag eingestellt und darin auch die Feddit Community DACH - Deutschsprachige Community für Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz erwähnt, damit mein Beitrag auch dorthin federiert wird. Das wurde er auch und ich bekam einiges von Likes von dort, aber im Gegensatz zu sonst keine Kommentare. Also habe ich direkt in der Community nachgeschaut und sah das dort mein Beitrag gelöscht worden war. Mit ein wenig Nachforschen bekam ich mit, das es dort bereits einen anderen Beitrag zum gleichen DW Video gab und man meinen Beitrag deshalb als Duplikat eingestuft und ohne jedes Feedback gelöscht hatte.

Der Unterschied zwischen den beiden Beiträgen bestand darin das der noch bestehende Beitrag aus einer URL und einem automatisch erzeugten Titel, sowie den via DW-Webseite gezogenen Kurzinformationen besteht. Mein Beitrag bestand aus dem kompletten Anrisstext auf der Webseite, entsprechender Formatierung, einen Link zur Webseite mit dem Video, einem Link direkt zur MP4 Version des Videos und einen Link zu weiteren Formaten des Videos. Dazu das Video selbst in eingebetteter Form und dann noch die entsprechenden Hashtags. Also doch zwei recht unterschiedlichen Varianten.

Aber mir geht es dabei gar nicht mal so sehr um diesen speziellen Beitrag. Mir geht es darum das wenn willkürlich und ohne jedes Feedback Inhalte gelöscht werden, Lemmy nicht kompatibel zum Rest des Fediverse ist. Das Lemmy Communitys nicht geeignet sind um darüber von anderen Fediverse Instanzen Inhalte zu teilen, da man sich nie sicher sein kann ob diese auf der betreffenden Lemmy Instanz nicht einfach sang und klanglos gelöscht werden.
