Längst nicht alles ist besser als gar nichts

Anything is far from being better than nothing

It's more often eye contact than you may think

Brix. They will be shat.

But wait, there's more: Even if a Hubzilla channel, upon confirming your follow request, "follows" you back, it doesn't necessarily actually follow you back, as in, let your toots and boosts in.

Chances are that the Hubzilla channel uses its permissions system to keep your toots and boosts out. Replies are allowed. DMs are allowed. But anything that isn't either is kept out.

If I follow you back, I don't necessarily really follow you back

@hosh If I were to do that, my blogging platform would be Hubzilla as well.

Granted, articles don't federate to Mastodon, and 95% of all Mastodon users wouldn't even notice that the blog post is part of the same channel as the announcement post, as in, the blog post technically is in the Fediverse. But it is, so someone who is Fediverse-savvy enough might point out that, at least as far as accessibility is concerned, the same rules apply to non-federating Hubzilla articles as to Mastodon toots.

On the other hand, it could all be futile anyway because Mastodon users aren't exactly known for being keen on opening links.

If there's such a thing as a universal character limit for alt-text in the Fediverse, it's not Mastodon's 1,500 characters.

It's Misskey's 512 characters.

That's also because Misskey has a bug that deletes alt-texts from outside if they're longer than 512 characters. So no matter how much work you've put into your long alt-text, Misskey users will think you haven't written any alt-text.

The five-class Fediverse

Welp, he was wrong about Mastodon fizzling out in two weeks, but the one thing he wasn't wrong about was Mastodon growing stagnant. Mastodon's sat at the same active user counts for a while and it's plateau'd. The platform hasn't seen any significant growth since the 2022 Twitter exodus, and though growth obviously isn't everything, Mastodon remains relatively niche.

Still, funny reading about this dude just having a massive skill-issue with using Mastodon.

Mastodon has a new human-over-AI contribution policy.

tl;dr:

- The human contributor is the sole party responsible for the contribution.

- If AI was used to generate a significant portion of your contribution (i.e. beyond simple autocomplete), we require you to disclose it in the Pull Request description.

- If you cannot guarantee the provenance and legal safety of the AI-generated code, do not submit it.

- Cases of repeated violations of these ... guidelines could result in a ban from our repositories.

I was on Inworld Review today!

@Stefan Bohacek I don't quite recall because it was so long ago. It must have been Mastodon users talking about it.

But I can pinpoint what exactly got me to stop keeping it at short visual descriptions in alt-text and instead start writing these extensive, highly detailed, highly explanatory monsters that don't fit into alt-text anywhere anymore.
