Nature is a befuddling combination of regularity (high tide, then low tide, then high tide again) and what seems to be random weather catastrophes (tsunamis, earthquakes).

She's not tame or boring. But she also is not actuated by greed, so though she may be unexpected in her actions, she is not evil.

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🏖️📉 #California has lost roughly 60% of its coastal sand dunes since the 1850s, a loss of about 442 km².

Researchers used historical #maps, aerial #photos, and #lidar #data tracked by #machinelearning to measure the decline. Most losses came from development, #erosion, and invasive grasses, but some dunes expanded by 15 km² .

The Strandhalle in Bremerhaven’s Havenwelten.

A distinctive building with plenty of history and a direct view of the water. With its brickwork, tower, and red tiled roofs, the Strandhalle is one of the unmistakable landmarks along the Weser promenade — a piece of Bremerhaven that brings together tradition, the coast, and the cityscape.

Buildings like this give the Havenwelten their own special character.

By the Geeste in Bremerhaven.

Standing among reeds, trees, and traces of the harbor, this yellow-and-black buoy looks almost like a quiet monument to maritime life. In the background, a crane and harbor structures hint at how closely nature, water, and maritime work are connected here.

A small detail by the waterside — yet full of harbor character.

Bremerhaven from the waterside.

On the horizon, the container cranes rise like a skyline of steel — practical, functional, and still impressive. In front of them lies the open water, above them a bright sky: a typical view of the maritime working world that shapes Bremerhaven.

It is exactly this mix of openness, technology, and coastal atmosphere that makes the harbor so fascinating time and again.

Bremerhaven with a wide view.

A walk along the water, a sky full of clouds, and the city skyline with its distinctive towers and buildings — views like this are part of what makes Bremerhaven so special. Between the dike, the shoreline, and the harbor, this scene captures that typical mix of calm, openness, and maritime city life.

A lighthouse, a wide sky, and open water — sometimes that is all it takes for a true coastal moment.

This photo is all about quiet simplicity: the distinctive green beacon, its clear silhouette, and the sense of space around it. A calm scene that still instantly feels like the North Sea and the edge of the harbor.

Bremerhaven in black and white.

A sailboat on the water, the pier behind it, and a lighthouse standing at the edge of the harbor. No big spectacle — just a quiet, almost timeless coastal moment between wind, water, and clouds.

In black and white, the whole scene feels as if it belongs to another era.

In the port of Bremerhaven.

Between working ships, ferries, and a wide open sky, the harbor once again reveals itself as a place of constant movement — rugged, busy, and yet almost still in this moment. Water, steel, and maritime scale, the kind of coastal scene you can rediscover again and again.

Warming seas can threaten the hidden relationship that supports seagrass meadows

"Seagrasses are often overlooked, but they are among the most important coastal habitats on Earth."

"Our findings highlight an important idea: the impacts of climate change on seagrasses can’t be understood by looking at the plants alone. The microbial communities living in the sediment can also influence how these plants respond to warming. "

"This has important implications for conservation and restoration. Around the world, seagrass meadows are declining due to coastal development, pollution and climate change. "

I made this shot at Møns Klint in Denmark. When I took it, I didn’t realize how much potential it had, so it was just a rather quick photograph. When I saw the photo on my computer, I kind of regretted not spending more time on it. Nevertheless, I really like the way it turned out.

Shorelines receding, worsening storms and coastal erosion. Who pays?

"We've got kilometres and kilometres of coast. So much of our housing [is] built on coastal communities that we are walking into an absolutely existential crisis for some of these regional towns and councils."

"Someone is going to need to pay for the costs of climate change, and at the moment, it is being picked up by taxpayers and ratepayers while these fossil fuel companies make huge profits."

"Companies based in Australia have contributed significantly to the climate crisis, and it's only fair for them to have to pay for some of those costs." >>

Nordmole construction site, Bremerhaven.

Here, one of the city’s most distinctive maritime landmarks is slowly taking shape again. After the old mole lighthouse began to lean in 2022, work is now underway on the new Nordmole — helping secure safe access to the Geeste estuary and paving the way for the return of the historic beacon.

Between water, steel, and a grey sky, Bremerhaven once again shows its raw maritime character.

Where volcanics & sandstone meet: the beach & cliffs at St Cyrus.
The cliffs at the edge of the reserve date back approximately 400 million years. Composed primarily of andesite and basalt, they were once active sea cliffs, carved out toward the end of the last Ice Age.

Late winter stormy tides have scoured lots of sand away from our local beaches in Sunderland, NE England. Here at Seaburn, it may be a while before any sandcastle construction work gets underway!
Fingers crossed, that as in previous occasions when this has happened, the sand will return in time for the summer.

"Black Sand, Kiss Me Home". Iceland? Nope! California...but a part of the state so remote they call it "The Lost Coast", for the main roads don't go there. Thinking of the light of the sun, the unique sound of that surf, the spectacular beauty of the landscape...I have to go back. Some day...
