“Death Valley Wildflowers” — Hillsides covered with wildflowers, Death Valley.

We just returned from another visit to Death Valley National Park. Wildflowers are blooming in California’s deserts and the show is far from over. It has been an odd weather year in California, but desert areas received abundant well-timed rainfall that is producing an above average (and perhaps earlier than usual?) wildflower bloom. We saw the potential back in December and scheduled our return to the park accordingly. We were not disappointed…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/02/28/de…

Barrier Canyon Style Fremont "ghost" panel. These nearly human sized pictographs are between 1500-4000 years old.

Of course, I'm not of the culture that produced this imagery, but I do wonder why they chose such an irregular surface for the images when nearby there were perfectly good flat surfaces?

(Note: I isolated the images using a parametric mask in the rgb primaries module in Darktable & upped the saturation of the red ochre pigment used.)

Native San Diego plant #422 in my ever-growing collection: Eremothera refracta.

Commonly known as Narrow-leaved Primrose, Narrowleaf Suncup, here it is seen growing out of granitic gravel in a wash in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California.

I couldn't visit Joshua Tree Parks and NOT go to Mastodon Peak!

So here it is!

It's in a more arid part of the park so there isn't many Joshua tree there.
But it's quite a sight anyway!

I spent almost 1 hour on the peak, completely alone, enjoying the silence of the desert (yes, apart from the wind there's no sound, it's eerie and wonderful).

💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: 🦖🏜️ It is rare to find more than just the teeth of a Spinosaurus, but a recent expedition in #Niger successfully uncovered a nearly complete skull and articulated skeleton.

This 95-million-year-old #predator was the length of a school bus and lived as a "riparian" hunter, snagging #fish in forested rivers hundreds of kilometers from the #ocean.

“Evening Road, Death Valley” — A gravel road descends toward desert playa under evening skies, Death Valley.

Sights like this become familiar if you spend much time exploring Death Valley National Park — a deserted gravel track heading off into the arid landscape with hills in the distance. There are variations: a narrow track following a streamed winding between high walls, a road crossing high desert mountains, and others. This particular example is not all that isolated — though it doesn’t get a lot of visitors…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/02/19/ev…

“Dawn Light” — Red dawn light on ridgetop boulders, Panamint Range.

I share this photograph as much for illustrative purposes as for its value as a photograph — it is, in part, a record of a remarkable light phenomenon that too many people never experience. Indeed, it can be difficult to rise hours before dawn, travel to a remote place in the darkness, and stand on a mountain ridge in the winter. But once you do it a few times and see what happens, you will likely be hooked…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/02/15/da…

“Window Formation, Desert Mountains” — Desert mountains beyond a teardrop-shaped window in a rock wall, Death Valley.

Death Valley National Park is full of popular and famous attractions that are quite accessible — Mesquite Dunes, Badwater, Zabriskie Point, to name a few. But there’s far more to this immense park than just those popular spots. There are equally worthy things to see everywhere, including in some rather remote locations. This is one of those sights, and the odds are that you would be alone here if you were to visit…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/02/13/wi…

#PolaroidGo at the edge of Mohave, on the way to LA via South West Chief #Amtrak line.

The small size of the camera and the negatives/film pack makes the Go a fantastic companion for space-strapped travel scenario (I always try to travel light, everything ideally fitting into a backpack).

I took quite a pile of photos from the travel, really need to get around to uploading them soon.

The luxury liner, "Desert Excursions," has run aground. What a catastrophic loss of a once mighty beloved cruise ship.

(OMG: I just noticed, I need to haul a skeleton out there and put it behind the tiller!)

“Distant Mountains, Reflection” — Manly Lake reflects distant mountains and morning haze.

The scale of Death Valley is monumental. It is one of the few National Parks where you encounter distances so great that faraway features disappear into the light and haze. The absence of familiar reference points like trees makes it harder to comprehend these distances. It is perhaps a mile to the nearby hills in this photograph, but the distant mountain range is many tens of miles away…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/02/07/di…
