Das #Fedilab Projekt braucht unsere Hilfe!

#Fedilab #fediverse #help

I've been working on Fedilab and few other open source projects since around 2017. It was a so good experience, having your feedback and your help. At the time I was financially comfortable and it helped me to spend time to develop useful software. But now, I am unfortunately facing some bad events in life. Each month started to be harder for me. I simply don't know how to ask you to help me financially. I have been accepting donations, but it has been to help the projects, not me personally.

With #Fedilab you can see profiles or conversations remotely with a simple tap. That means the app will use the public API of remote instances to get all data that might not be known by your instance.
This is really useful to get all messages especially for small instances.

⚠️If you made the choice to enable remote conversations and/or remote profiles by default in settings, it will bring edge effects with the coloring of action buttons such boost, fav, etc. (1/2)

If you want that #Fedilab displays your pronouns close to your username in messages, you just have to create a field with the key "pronouns" (don't translate it) and what you want in the value field.
This might not be limited to the Fedilab app.

#Fedilab

In the next release of #Fedilab, your features hashtags will be displayed on your profile. Tapping on them will display a timeline with all your messages containing the tapped hashtag.

- We started to fix bug reports for #Fedilab, we will also bring some enhancements that have been submitted.

- #Fediplan is on #Weblate (a request for Libre hosting has been submitted). The app should be available soon on #FDroid

hosted.weblate.org/projects/fe…

We would like to thank you concerning the development of the #Fediplan app. While it is not an app that many of you will use, you keep supporting our work. Now be sure we are back to fix bug reports and enhancements on #Fedilab

#Fediplan dev is over. We are submitting it to #Fdroid.

We included a way to edit your scheduled messages (kind of trick like delete and rewrite).
We also took care of adding accessibility labels on each action button.

We will see with #Weblate to open a translation project (codeberg.org/tom79/FediplanApp…)

Now, we are back to #Fedilab

For crash reports, we might add details about your settings. There is of course no personal information, but that will help us to understand some situations.

PS: Crash reports are filtered in a dedicated directory where emails are removed after a month.

If you didn't opt-in in #Fedilab, you are not concerned (and you can opt-out just by switching off).

Thank you for your contributions.

While coding #Fediplan in React-Native we are pretty sure that we can rewrite #Fedilab in future so it can be supported on other platforms than Android.

#Fedilab 3.32.3 has been published.

Fixed:
- Polls not displayed
- Pagination with trends
- Push notifications not working on some devices

In parallel with enhancements and bug fixes on #Fedilab, we started to develop the dedicated app for #Fediplan (iOS/Android).
For curious devs, it is in React-Native using typescript.
Of course, as it's not a priority, we can't give an ETA.

#Fedilab 3.32.2 has been published.

Added:
- An outline around media

Changed:
- Make username, display name in nav drawer clickable
- Gif media not animated by default
- Disable by default the mention to the booster when replying. Can be enabled in Settings > Compose (per account)

Fixed:
- Wrong preview picture on share from another app
- Crash when translating with MinT
- Refresh and pagination broken for the Trending timeline
- Fix lags / Crashes

codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

Now that #Fedilab 3.32.1 is available for everyone, we received several reports:

- Crashes and lags related to a library that we recently updated.
It is used to animate emojis. We will rollback this update as there are no critical issues with it.

For people having crashes without lags, it can be related while playing Gif automatically in your timelines. Could you please disable this feature and give us your feedback before and after? (More in the media description)

Thank you for your help.

To people that still do not receive push notifications with #Fedilab, please give a try to #SunUp

f-droid.org/packages/org.unifi…

We recommend this app over NTFY because you won't be rate limited.

It is of course not limited to Fedilab and you can use it with any other apps.

This month, #Fedilab celebrates its 8 years. Thank you for your support 🙏

codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

#Fedilab 3.32.0 has been published

- Add more content descriptions for buttons
- Update some buttons
- Update navigation drawer header
- Squeeze action buttons when needed to prevent overlapping

@Gerhard Hallstein @OldKid ⁂ I've had the same problem for a long time. I found a solution that works very well. I delete these contacts with the #fedilab app.

Currently we are giving a little more time for the next update of #Fedilab to catch more of your feedback about all previous releases. We should be able to publish a new release next week. Thank you for your reports and messages.

The huge version of #Fedilab (3.31.1) was compiled by #FDroid. We are sorry for that, we thought to have made everything to avoid that (3.31.1 exists in a smaller release).
This important difference in size is due to the use of a library that allows to locally detect the language used in a message. We needed it for MinT translator that doesn't support auto detection.
We immediately removed this lib and we used the language attached to a message (though it is not perfect)

Really sorry for that

To Google Play users, now, we attach each time the #Fedilab apk for Google Play in release notes.

codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

This is exactly the same apk that we submit to Google (no signature issue). That simply allows you to get it faster without breaking updates.

Did you know that you can customize colors with #Fedilab ?
These colors can be set for light and dark mode independently.

Sometimes, just changing the color of links is enough to improve your UX.

#Fedilab 3.31.3 has been published:

Added:
- Add new icon launchers (Settings > Interface)

Changed:
- Make logout/proxy button more visible in main menu
- Remove permission FOREGROUND_SERVICE
- Improve a little more media layout with translations

Fixed:
- Fix status bar icons not visible in light theme with custom accent color
- Reaction buttons not clickable for some instances

codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

#Fedilab 3.31.2 has been published

Added:
- Add support to URL scheme "web+ap" for opening profiles with the app

Changed:
- Layout for media descriptions

Fixed:
- Fix a crash when translating media descriptions
- Handle included twice when replying to a self user's boost
- Fix color issues when using a custom theme

codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

If you want to share an account without sharing its email/password you can do it with #Fedilab
You just have to create a token with the Mastodon Web UI (you can customize access read/write).
In the login page of Fedilab there is an option to authenticate an account with a token.

For people using our custom #FDroid repo with #Fedilab

The suggested version is not the correct one. Please manually update if you want to test MinT (date: 03/28).

Sorry for that.

#Fedilab 3.31.1 has been published.

Added:
- Add MinT machine translation system support
- Add support "instance only" for #GoToSocial

Fixed:
- GIF not displayed in timelines
- Fix a crash when unpinning timelines
- Top bar coloring at scroll for conversations
- Black screen when going back from the #Peertube section

codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

#Fedilab source code is not hosted on #GitHub but on #Codeberg at codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab

GitHub only contains our mirrored repository at github.com/stom79/Fedilab

Now we have a wiki for #Fedilab!

We are slowly migrating the existing (and not-so-complete) documentation to the new wiki 😀

If you would like to help by adding/maintaining a wiki page for a feature you like, DM us and we can create a wiki account for you 😀

Here's one of the pages we moved so far:
wiki.fedilab.app/wiki/User_Int…

Hey @pixelfed,

Are the API endpoints used in the official #Pixelfed app documented somewhere or we missed something?

We try our best to provide good Pixelfed support in #Fedilab. It would be easier if API information are easily accessible. That would help other third-party apps too. There are some information available in beta-preview.pixelfed.io and docs.pixelfed.org, but it seems not complete

#Fedilab 3.31.0 has been published:

Added:

- Pinned Trending Timeline (can be hidden in "Manage Timelines")
-Add a fallback to the default translator
- New #Pixelfed entry in Settings to disable fullscreen for media
- Add tooltips for tabs in profiles

More about release notes and fixes at:

codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

We added the Google apk files for people that don't want to wait.

#Fedilab 3.30.1 seems a really more stable release. We received only two crash reports.
Did you notice more stability recently?

  • Yes, with latest releases (46%, 13 votes)
  • No, stability is the same (53%, 15 votes)
  • I got crashes but I don't send them (0%, 0 votes)
28 voters. Poll end: 3 months ago

You might know that #Fedilab runs its own translation server (using #LibreTranslate).
But did you know that the app also supports two other translators?

- #Lingva: you won't need extra steps though you can change the default instance.

- #DeepL: A more powerful translator. It's a paid service but you can get 500,000 characters per month for free.

Everything is configurable in settings Have a look to media descriptions).

More about getting a free DeepL api key: support.deepl.com/hc/en-us/art…

Still no crash reports received for #Fedilab 3.30.1 (523).

- We fixed the issue with media descriptions not updated (when editing a message with several media).

- We are still investigating the issue with push notifications for some Google users where the app distributor is not saved in settings.

Would you be interested by a full step by step on how to use our #FDroid repo to get updates immediately?

It will cover all situations (when coming from FDroid or Google Play). Explain more about beta releases, backup data before switching etc.

We can even make this part translatable to reach more people.

#Fedilab

  • Yes, I am interested (57%, 106 votes)
  • No, not interested (14%, 27 votes)
  • I am already using it (28%, 53 votes)
186 voters. Poll end: 3 months ago

#Fedilab 3.30.1 has been published.

Added:
- Follow Twitter tags (pinned timelines through #Nitter)

Change:
- Remove automatic backup (Google only)

Fixed:
- Push notifications not working for some devices
- Filters not applied to media description
- Fix a crash with animated images in timelines
- Fix a crash for long threads
- Fix a crash due to some messages (happened in different timelines)

Today we should be able to publish a new release which fixes crashes that you reported.
It will also bring a fix for push notifications.

#Fedilab

In coming days, we will start to move our services to a new server that will be more reliable. We will keep you informed. #Fedilab

Next month, #Fedilab will be 8 years old. That's somewhat amazing to write that.

The app growed with your help. Most in-app features that we have implemented thanks to your suggestions became available through the Mastodon API.

- Bookmarks, translations, scheduled messages, timed-mute, home muted for lists, etc.

So simply a big thank you for your support and make the app as it is🙏

To people using instances that support more features than Mastodon, could you tell us what missing features should be implemented?

PS: #Fedilab already supports some features such reactions or quotes (you have to enable extra-features in Settings).

#Fedilab 3.30.0 has been published in production.

Added:

- Allow to follow the discover timelines of #Pixelfed instances
- Keep media proportions in timeline for Pixelfed
- Add a like button in timelines for Pixelfed
- Allow to login with a token

Changed:

- Use Pixelfed layout when following Pixelfed instances
- Allow to scroll buttons for larger screens in conversations
- Move QR code into header

Fixes ⤵️

If you write messages in different languages, the long list of available languages might be boring to scroll.

To make things easier, just go in Settings > Compose and tap on "Languages in picker".

Then select languages you want to see when composing.

#Fedilab

We have to change the category of #Fedilab in Google Play from "Social Network" to "Tools".
The reason, if it is set as a social Network app we have to provide a link to report child abuses.
While it is an important move from Google, it is impossible for us to link to such a report form. This part has to be managed by instances and Google will not understand when submitting the app to reviews.

Support for Twitter, even via Nitter, is not what i like to finance frankly.

#Pixelfed #Fedilab #Nitter

It seems no longer possible to follow #Pixelfed instances. Now, when pinning a Pixelfed instance #Fedilab will display their daily discover messages.

We are now fixing #Nitter instances to follow accounts on Twitter.

If you want to translate #Fedilab in your language, you can contribute on #Weblate

A big thank you to all our contributors

hosted.weblate.org/projects/fe…

People often ask us what "Home muted users" means.
For the context, when you want to add a user in a list, you have to follow the account first.
So that means, you will receive their messages in your Home timeline.
#Fedilab introduced a feature that allows to mute them only for Home (this is an in-app feature).
If you have a list, you can bulk mute users for Home. Otherwise it's possible from their profile.

#Fedilab 2.30.0-beta-1 has been published in beta channels (Google and #FDroid).

Added:
- Keep media proportions in timelines for #Pixelfed
- Add a like button in timelines for Pixelfed

Change:
- Give more space to focused message in conversation

Fixed:
- Not clickable URLs when Markdown is enabled
- Pixelfed timeline not displayed by default
