#TooManyRequests #issue #Mastodon #Android

Recently I told you about the offline translator available on #FDroid.
f-droid.org/packages/dev.david…
Currently, translating opens the translator app. The idea is to keep everything inside #Fedilab: the translated text comes straight back into the post, so you never leave the app. You do not even notice it used another app in the background. It is already done in #HolosSocial, and I will add it to Fedilab.

I won't vote on this, but I often use open source TTS software on my smartphone, it works tremendously well.
Soooo, I think this feature would be useless or double use.

#Fedilab

I talked about an Open Source AI solution to describe media. But what about audio that writes the text for you? When a description is missing, it lets you speak, writes the text for you, and you confirm. Would you like this in #Fedilab?

  • Yes (41%, 36 votes)
  • No (58%, 51 votes)

Go on with the good job, #Fedilab is very much appreciated ! You have no reason to apologize for *suggesting* a feature.

don't we have this already with @altbot ? The used model differs, but apart from that it reads very similar.

#Fedilab #MoonDream

An idea for #Fedilab: a feature to generate a description for your photos to help accessibility. You post an image, and a suggested alt text comes back for you to review and edit before publishing. It would run on a self-hosted open source vision model (#MoonDream: github.com/vikhyat/moondream) on my own server, in a closed loop with no cloud, no third-party service and no image stored. Would this be useful to you?

I am a little confused by the reactions to my last suggestion. It makes me wonder if I should also stop #LibreTranslate in #Fedilab, because it also uses AI. But it was already trained. When I use it, I only run it, I do not train it. I would like to hear your views before I decide anything.
We can keep talking here calmly, I am really open to it.

Having media with no description might be frustrating. Would you like a feature in #Fedilab to filter out posts with such media?

If you are a polyglot, #Fedilab introduces a feature for you: detect the language before posting. A pop-up lets you quickly change the language before posting to the #Fediverse.
You can easily enable this feature in the settings.

#Fedilab 3.42.1 is available.

You can now translate profile bios, set a custom background colour for direct messages, and view poll results without voting.
It also brings several improvements and fixes.

#Fedilab now lets you set a custom colour for DMs in your timelines, making them easier to spot. Just search for DM in settings to find it.

I often get the question of when #Fedilab will be available on #FDroid, and it's impossible for me to tell you exactly. When I publish a release, it means F-Droid can gather the new code to build it on its side.

But did you know that you can easily track builds of Android apps with "F-Droid Build Status"?
You can even favorite builds of your preferred apps.

Never forget that #Fedilab is driven only by you. Your suggestions, your reports, your feedback, and your opinion through polls. As a developer I do not impose anything, I step aside and follow what you wish. Fedilab has always been built on your input. And maybe that is what makes it stand apart, and still alive after 9 years. Thank you for that.

#Fedilab uses #UnifiedPush for push notifications in every version. The Google Play version comes with a built-in distributor that relies on Google, so notifications work right away. The #FDroid version cannot include that built-in distributor, so you need to install a separate one, like #ntfy or #Sunup. Once it is installed and selected in Fedilab, push works the same way. This is why F-Droid users need an extra app while Google Play users do not. This extra step is not specific to Fedilab.

#Fedilab 3.42.0 is available for all.

This release brings many fixes and additions from the beta channels, such as per-boost visibility, editing of profile picture and banner descriptions, a language check when posting, a mixed conversation mode, an unread DM badge, and announcement badges. It also brings several fixes.

Thank you for your contributions.

I am very happy to be able to maintain #Fedilab and #HolosSocial alongside each other and keep updating smaller projects (they are mostly a kind of break in coding).
But I do know I can't do more without breaking the development of one of them, or worse, all of them.
That's also why, the first week of July, I will take a week off. I'll keep my computer with me in case I need to fix something on the server side, but it's important to step back and have a break.

In #Fedilab there is #Markdown (MD) support, but this option only renders plain text with MD markers as formatted text on the client.
Fedilab can also flag that you wrote in MD, so instances supporting it convert your message to HTML before federating.
The catch is that once an instance turns MD into HTML, it defeats Fedilab's original feature, since the text is no longer plain Markdown to render locally.

#Fedilab has an old entry called "Extra features", which was added long ago when #Mastodon forks came around with features such as reactions. This is something to rework: the app can detect what an instance supports and enable supported features automatically.

The next #Fedilab release will be able to detect a mismatch between the written text and the selected language of the message. This uses the #LibreTranslate server, so it has no extra weight on the final APK size and doesn't use any Google stuff. It will be turned off by default.

Thanks to @RachelThornSub for the suggestion.

To beta testers #Fedilab 3.42.0-beta-2 is available. It adds a language check when posting (detects language mismatch, disabled by default). It also brings several fixes: collection errors on profiles, adding accounts to collections, notification timeline empty on restart, animated emoji freezes, and multiple app windows when sharing.

Release notes: codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/rel…

Working on and fixing a lot of bugs really takes some pressure off when it is published in the beta channels. The hardest part with #Fedilab is matching all the conditions to reproduce a bug.

But I am also happy to still support Android SDK 21. It is a deliberate choice on my side: keeping the app light on recent APIs and their dependencies, even if it means giving up a few newer features.

#Fedilab 3.42.0-beta-1 is available for beta testers.

It adds a boost visibility option, a remove button in thread composition, an unread DM badge in the bottom menu, a mixed conversation mode, and announcement badges.

I also prioritized all bugs with an easy fix to clear out several of them, including some old ones.

I apologize about the latest 3.41.0 release of #Fedilab that introduced a deceptive UX. Collections work with the #Mastodon API on instances running 4.6 (currently in release candidate). I should have added a safeguard depending on the Mastodon release. I am really sorry for that.

Long presses often give access to hidden features in #Fedilab. For instance, just long press a URL to get more options. You can even check redirects and visit the destination directly, bypassing the tracking redirect.

It's already available on #Fedilab. But even with the greatest care, mistakes can happen, so if you have the opportunity to test, don't hesitate to share issues so I can fix them fast. Thank you!

For #Mastodon app developers and fellow #fediverse platform developers, with the approaching Mastodon 4.6 release we've put together an overview of new and changed APIs that you may want to look at! Collections, profile editing, #Wrapstodon, and more:

I already said it, #HolosSocial is by far my most ambitious project. But most of you know me and support me for #Fedilab.
Right now I try to fairly balance the work between these two big projects. My smaller projects feel more like a break.
Please be honest, this matters to me:

  • Fedilab first, slow down Holos (23%, 28 votes)
  • Both together is fine (55%, 66 votes)
  • No opinion (20%, 24 votes)

Eat this Facebook

@si_irini

"... Über Screenshot... Ok, das heißt, es war dann auch nur eine Bilddatei (PNG oder JPEG) und somit auf einen Bildschirm (*ohne* Seitenumbrüche) beschränkt-->das bringt uns nicht weiter.
Ok, ich muss inzwischen sehen, wo ich den Chat habe und dann werde ich es über die #FediLab-App probieren (automatische aber willkürliche Thread-Umbrüche).

I took some time to fix the built-in translator for #Fedilab and #HolosSocial. No updates on your side, it concerns the service on the server.

#Fedilab 3.41.0 is available.

This release adds Collections support, ready for the upcoming Mastodon 4.6. You can create, edit, delete and browse collections, manage their members, and you get notified when someone adds you, with the option to remove yourself.

You can now tap the ALT badge to read a media description without opening it. It also fixes timeline gaps, the app refreshing on every open, and the battery drain caused by animated emojis.

Print feito no #Fedilab.

Most people know about messages, photos and videos on the #Fediverse. But the #ActivityPub protocol actually defines several object types, each one distinct and more or less compatible across apps:

- Note: short post (Mastodon)
- Article / Page: long text or shared link (WriteFreely, Lemmy)
- Image (Pixelfed)
- Video (PeerTube)
- Audio (Funkwhale)
- Event with date and place (Mobilizon)

A quick question for #Fedilab users: would you find it useful if I used milestones on #Codeberg? The idea is to group issues by upcoming release, so you can see what is planned for the next version, what is being worked on, and when it should be ready. Your feedback will help me decide if it is worth setting them up.

  • Yes, I would check the milestones (0 votes)
  • No, I would not look at them (0 votes)
  • No opinion (0 votes)

#Fedilab 3.40.2 is available. It's mainly a bug fix release, with one small addition: a warning for expired scheduled boosts at startup.

#Fedilab 3.40.1 is available!

This release integrates #OfflineTranslator as an external app that allows you to translate content offline if you have this app installed. You can also now choose to place the compose button at the top when using reverse mode.
The release also brings several fixes.
