Today this 1 m long and 1,850 kg heavy Cucuzza made an Italian-Canadian family very happy.
The plant is growing in the garden below the deck, and would overgrow the house if allowed 😂.
Surprised to be able to find a lot of recipes now online. Much needed to be able to deal with this monster vegetable!

📰 America’s Biggest Irrigated Crop Is Lawn Grass 😬
🌎 U.S.: With **40+ million acres** of turf blanketing the country, experts warn that our yards have become ecological dead zones, in the midst of rapid insect and bird population declines.
🦋 Native plants otoh feed caterpillars, support specialist insects, and rebuild the energy pathways that lawns erase.
👉 Dedicate just a corner of your yard to natives and restore the wildlife pantry.
A single oak, a viburnum, or a patch of goldenrod and coneflower can jump‑start a functioning food web right outside your door.

The biggest irrigated crop across the US isn't food — it's grass, and wildlife pays the price
Across the United States, lawns and turf cover more than 40 million acres, making grass the country's largest irrigated crop by area.Leigh Cook (The Cool Down)

Peppers and fruit today.
Realizing I planted way too many yellow and orange peppers. Will fix next year.
Also bunny broke into the raised garden bed again: chewed down leafy greens and obvious evidence of bunny parkour. Patched up more fencing and they seem to be out for at least 5 days so I fall planted. 🤞

A town in Germany transformed all their public green spaces into edible gardens.
Can we get this everywhere?

Clematis in my back garden, after going more or less dormant in the late spring it’s starting to show new growth and a couple of blooms.

I still have some 5¼" floppies, but we found a better use for this box.
Surprised to see a Ruby-throated Hummingbird probe a wilted, male Cucuzza flower.
The Cucuzza, a gourd, flowers at night, each flower lasting only one night. The flowers look beautiful in the twilight hours.
We've been giving away a lot of Cucuzzas, or we would have had to eat them every few days until next summer 😂.
Grasses and seed heads are still looking good, providing structure and interest. The beauty of naturalistic planting is that it does not depend solely on flowers but offers beauty in seed heads and foliage as well. I think with future gardens, in areas that will have hot dry summers, we have to accept that the majority of plants will go dormant in summer, and the main flowering season will be spring and early summer, like in Mediterranean countries. #climatechange #gardening

I think that #ecogrief and how we come into action without getting overwhelmed, is one of the big topics of our time.
Your way is a healing one, it connects people. We can build our communities by finding like-minded people, and this can change bigger structures or build new ones.

The hot and dry summer is a good test to see what is doing well with these new climate conditions and what not. Doing very well are all my grapevines so I will plant more in winter. They got frosted several times in spring but have come back without problems and look very happy now. They are full of large bunches of grapes which will be ripe soon. Pretty much the only fruit that I can harvest this year so very much looking forward to it 😀. #fruit #gardening
Not every soil found can support the growth of carrots.
And the worst mistakes most farmers do here,is to feed the plant without feeding the soil.
Hello fellow farmers, before you feed the plant, feed the soil first and the soil will feed the plant.
Together we can strengthen communities through food production and environment conservation programs.

At least one female Agapostemon has emerged 💚 She flew by while I was photographing the squash bee tucking in to sleep before the pumpkin flower closed up for the day. Three different native bees visited this flower this morning. #bees #gardening

For several years now I am trying to adapt my wildlife allotment to climate change/breakdown. Planting more trees for shade, planting more densely and with high diversity, planting resilient native plants, lots of mulching, keeping ground covered, adding lots of organic matter, planting in layers as is done in forest gardening, encourage self-seeding. Still this is not enough, the climate is breaking down so fast now it is hard to keep up. Not sure what else to do. #climatechange #gardening
#ArschDerHeide #Garten #gardening #GrowYourOwn #Selbstversorgung

Unexpected garden guests this morning. They somehow jumped in and didn’t seem to know how to jump back out. It took some encouragement getting them through the garden gate. I left them by the bus stop to catch the 6:15 local back to the edge of town. 🦌
Food security can begin at home.

My garden Chipmunk planted a bunch of Sunflowers in the garden - just for me, of course 😊.
Forgiven are all the tomatoes he is investigating for ripeness and taste.
(Granted, DH might have a slightly different opinion about that.)

●Don't Plant Everything at Once.
If all your vegetables are planted on the same day, they may also mature around the same period.

We are pleased to introduce a new member of our household, Myra. She's a 3-year-old rescue and extremely shy. When we brought her home, she hid under the bed for about a month. She's settling in now and loves to be petted and brushed. She inherits a position in a long line of torties to guard the house.

Behold!
It may not look like much but it’s evidence I was finally able to lock out the bunnies from the raised bed! They can’t resist red veined chicory and chew it down to the base whenever they’re on it.
This comes after weeks of chasing them around and reinforcing/patching fencing wherever they escape.
Hopefully now my plants can recover to collect seed and I can plant for fall. (Too hot this week)

And the first ripe maypop that wasn’t stolen by a squirrel!
What are these? Sloes? Or something poisonous? Am I going to die?
We're starting to let these tromboncino squash harden into winter squash. They weigh a lot and should hold us over through winter.
I also have a dozen more to pick... 😳
Last year had success with a few bell pepper plants in a pot. This year, I ordered and planted a variety of sweet peppers, since we enjoyed them so much.
Guess what?
They aren't all sweet! A few have been quite spicy! Even son who likes spicy stuff says these have a lot of heat.
Is this typical with pepper seed and plants? This is literally the entirety of my pepper growing experience.
I would really prefer to spend my day making more squash slings for the pumpkins and spaghetti squash that have annoyingly decided to climb the bean trellises, even though they produce 3lb+ fruits.
But no.

Now this one is trying their luck with the Coriander. I hope they abhor it as much as I do 😬.
I love the coriander seeds though to spice up my sourdough rye bread.
Just astounded I got this picture.

So the purple bell peppers worked, except they are black, not purple. I have another one on a plant that is developing a green patch, but almost all of them are turning out black. Hope they taste good!
