Most mushrooms release their spores from their undersides through a catapult like action that shoots the spores out with incredible speed and force.

This Varnished Polypore was in the firing range of nearby mushrooms and itself, getting its top (!) covered with creamy brown spores. I rubbed away a heart-shaped patch to expose the mushroom’s normal appearance.

That’s a LOT of spores.

Progress. I was instructed to keep the buckets on the porch until they started producing mushrooms. A couple of days ago, I moved them out into the yard under a tree so they could be shaded. One bucket didn’t like it and the new fungi began to dry so I moved it back to the porch. This one seems just fine though. #mushrooms #gardening

Okay, I’ve got two buckets full of straw inoculated with pink oyster #mushroom spores. My friend came over with all of the supplies and it was super straightforward: we drilled holes in two 5 gallon buckets, spread straw on a tarp, mixed it with mushroom spores, wet it and mixed it all together and then filled the buckets with the mixture. I thought those were droppings of a deer but a closer inspection revealed they were very small (1-2 cm) mushrooms.

We had our first fresh #mushrooms of the year for lunch yesterday. Couldn't find many of them, just the four because they prefer growing out of melting snow that we didn't have this early spring, but they are substantial and were healthy so we added a few young #asparagus spears and parsley greens from the garden to the meal and, together with a dandelion greens salad picked at the #forest margins, it was well worth the slightly frustrating weekend walk in the #woods.
