Erythrulose, a sugar found in raspberries, kiwis and many red fruits, also apparently exists in a giant molecular cloud of gas and dust near the center of our galaxy, some 26,745 light-years from Earth. NGC 3628, more commonly known as the Hamburger Galaxy, is a prominent edge-on spiral galaxy located approximately 35 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. This detailed portrait highlights the galaxy's expansive galactic disk, which is bifurcated by thick, dark lanes of cosmic dust that obscure the light from its dense stellar population. Unlike other members of the Leo Triplet, NGC 3628 exhibits a notable tidal tail and a flared disk, features that provide critical evidence of past gravitational interactions with its neighboring galaxies, M65 and M66.
