Im Sommer wirkt die Landschaft, durch die sich die schmalen Straße 8100 schlängelt, wie eine einzige weite Tundra mit Blick auf die Barentsee. Im Winter wird sie komplett unter Schnee versinken und ist dann monatelang unpassierbar. Ich kann mir kaum vorstellen, wie isoliert die Menschen hier früher lebten.

Up in Weardale, around 3.5 km north of the village of Wolsingham, Co Durham, is Tunstall Reservoir.
Originally built as a water supply reservoir for the Weardale and Shildon District Waterworks Company, between 1873 and 1879 by the 19th century water engineer Thomas Hawksley.
These days the reservoir is soley used to maintain minimum regulatory flows on the River Wear, supporting of water abstractions further downstream, at Chester-le-Street.
There is car parking and a popular picnic spot available half way along the west side of the reservoir and if you're wanting to stretch your legs, you can do a complete circuit with an interesting section through the woods to the left in this view.

Summer and I were awake before first light.
It's getting to be that time of year.
A few chores to get done before we head out to adventure. We thought we might see a colorful sunrise but it was hit and miss.
Because our first choice was taken by people with several unleashed dogs we had to look farther off the beaten path. Lucky for Summer we have options. Driving very slow on a road that barely qualifies as a road got us to a beach with no people.
Summer was her joyful self.
I was feeling lucky that I can still get where we needed to get on foot. It was more work than our usual morning walk.
Worth it though.
