Happy Valley Reservoir (1892–1897) cost $1.8 million and became Adelaide’s third major water source after Thorndon Park and Hope Valley. The old township was relocated; its cemetery remains near the dam wall. Fed by a 5 km tunnel from Clarendon Weir, it began filling in 1896. Yesterday came across these tracks I hadn't photographed prior👍. I like to use b&w for man-made structures & people. I think it conveys a subtle (or not so subtle🤷‍♂️) mood that color often overwhelms.

I just registered a new domain, to replace my container infrastructure domain with an European one (@Linux inspired me for this!).

I went with kiste.nl (Dutch word for crate).

Only has 5 characters and allows for so many puns and nice word-plays in sub-domains:

- Logistics/shipping: cargo, freight, manifest, shipment, delivery, express, priority

- Materials: wooden, steel, plastic, cardboard, aluminum, composite

- Sizes: small, large, jumbo, mini, bulk, heavy

- States: sealed, open, locked, stacked, packed, labeled

Country roads are very different from urban ones. For one thing, they appeared far later in history. Until the nineteenth century, in fact, roads outside cities were virtually certain to be made of packed earth: rough, flood-prone, and very unreliable. The first method for improving them in a cost-effective way ap- pear-ed around 1820, when a Scottish road-building obsessive named John Loudon McAdam figured out how to lay out a level road with proper drainage, using nothing but broken stone. China's Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is set to open this year, becoming the world's tallest bridge at 625 metres high. Recent footage of the bridge has been released, showing crews putting on the finishing touches.

Construction began in 2022, and took just three years to complete. The bridge is nearly over a kilometre long and stands nine times higher than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It will cut travel time for drivers from an hour to a minute.

Ultimately, we need to start building new multi-country organizations, designed from the start to be community-run and resilient. A coalition of university libraries could be ideally placed to lead this effort, as they already have vast experience building for and supporting access to scientific data and publications. Just imagine a world in which universities mutually support one another by building scientific infrastructure based on free sharing, giving every country, from the poorest to the richest, secure access to the scientific data that can change the world for the better. This isn’t fanciful. It can happen, but we have to put the effort in, because nobody will do it for us.
