This is Dionaea muscipula 'B-52', a giant Venus Flytrap cultivar known for producing some of the largest traps in cultivation, often exceeding 1.5 to 2 inches in length. "B-52" is a code number assigned by Henning von Schmeling, the person who developed the plant. It does not refer to the bomber, the band, or the hair style.

On a lighter note, I'm trying to improve my photography and nature ID skills – a return to my long-ago uni studies: zoology and botany.
Great Sun Orchids - Thelymitra aristata - were blooming at Anglesea (VIC) with a warm and sunny day. This one's simple, but some plants had 30-40 large (35mm/1.5in) flowers on their impressive flower spikes.

Galling 😀

Recently, friends and I have been trying to learn a little more about galls, particularly wasp galls on oak trees.

We found about a dozen species on local nature reserves. It took some work to identify them all, but we're reasonably sure of these.

The life cycles are fascinating, with all sorts of parasitical twists and evolutionary turns.

Somebody has chewed a hole through the side of a Sarracenia leucophylla pitcher. Wasps are a favorite prey of Sarracenia species, and sometimes when a wasp falls into the pitcher it's able to chew its way out. This doesn't really harm the plant, as it's still able to trap and digest additional prey. But sometimes the critters are able to make an escape.
