John Maurelio on the slab-sided and bland designs of today’s “future-cars” (Ferrari Luce, Audi Nuvolari, Jaguar Type 00, Tesla Cybertruck):

“I think that this points to something bigger: Nobody believes in the future any more. … Companies and the people who work there know that something has to change, but they have absolutely no idea of where things should go. There just isn’t any optimism. … So, they try to make something jarring and attention-grabbing rather than something that’s actually looking toward a better future, not just a dystopian one.”

I happen to like the design of the Nuvolari, but in general, I agree. Looking back to the cars of the 1970s through 2000s, there was clearly an optimism in technology and art that is absent from the concept #cars of today, which look like objects that defend you from the dystopia outside.

How about another fun car from Saturday? This is a Cord. They were built by Auburn in 1936-37. In addition to the great swoopy design they were known for several technical innovations: front-wheel drive, hideaway headlights, and a semi-automatic transmission.

Alas, those innovations led to reliability problems Demand dropped quickly after the initial sensation and the Cord brand faded away.

Car drivers, when I say I'm ***terrified*** of biking on a city street where the speed limit is 50 km/h (and realistically most will still do do 60-70 km/h+) this is why.

It's also why you should slow the hell down and "it's just 10 over" doesn't fly.

An abandoned 1930s Opel Olympia lies deep within the highland forests of Scotland's Highlands

For decades, it has stood here, away from public roads and in a forestry logging area. The forest has now swallowed the old track that once drove the car here, leaving it alone among the conifers.
