This trail in Vermont follows a picturesque stream for miles, crossing over the stream many times on bridges like this. While I was cross country skiing on the trail earlier this week, there were also people running, walking, and cycling (fat tires). Fun for all! #FootpathFriday #Footbridge #skiing

This innocent looking trail I hiked last week leads to a steep class-II descent down the wall of a gorge. Reward-- a beautiful frozen #waterfall! Wearing only microspikes and having (intentionally) left my crampons behind, I chose to stop just before the steep slippery section-- still got a decent view of the falls! #FootpathFriday #Vermont #mountains

Not all trails are made just of dirt and rock. Some also involve crossing streams. This is one of our stream crossings from the trip earlier this week. Relatively easy, just took a little thought before taking the stretched-out step over the water between the two boulders-- main concern was that the launch/land points on the two boulders were wet slippery moss on sloping rock surfaces. #FootpathFriday #hiking #nature

Here is a pic from my hike up to the ridge last month in the Presidential Range, White Mountains, NH. Above the tree line, there were significant fields of boulders and the "trail" was marked by cairns like this. I'm planning another trip to the ridge for sometime next month, but approaching from the other side of the ridge (east side). And, yes, more boulders!! #FootpathFriday #hiking #mountains

Check out the roots! The trail that I hiked on in my recent adventure in the White Mountains, NH varied dramatically as I hiked from the trailhead up to the ridge. While much of the trail consisted of either steep rock slabs or a boulder field up high, it looked much more like a trail down low such as in this pic with roots, small rocks, and dirt. #FootpathFriday #hiking #mountains

Can you see the trail here? After climbing up steep slabs of rock during the ascent on last week’s hike in the White Mountains, NH, I was greeted with an expansive field of boulders through which I traversed —- over two miles (3+ km) of boulders like this. Made for slow going. This mountain (Mt Washington) is nicknamed “the rock pile” for good reason! #FootpathFriday #hiking #mountains

This #FootpathFriday photo showed up on my lock screen earlier today. Made me remember a great time I had in the Glacier Peak Wilderness in September 2023. This photo is from Miners Ridge I believe. Want to visit this wildness again next summer for sure.
