Farmers in Australia and around the world are under immense pressure from climate change, but if that wasn’t bad enough, they are also under pressure from “the climate obstruction network.”

The climate obstruction network is a coordinated coalition of carbon-intensive industry lobbyists, ideological political factions, and digital disinformation actors working to delay or block the transition to a Net Zero economy.

In 2026 the Australian government released a report called The Integrity Gap: Restoring Trust in the Climate and Energy Debate. The report found that across regional Australia, this network is actively tearing communities apart by weaponising misinformation that pits farmer against farmer, deliberately seeding anger and distrust where there was once rural solidarity. By spreading false narratives about renewable energy and the economic impact of climate policies, they have transformed local town halls into battlegrounds, turning neighbours against each other and stalling the very local solutions that farming families need to protect their long-term livelihoods.

The government report identifies the climate obstruction network as a coordinated ecosystem comprising of the fossil fuel industry, major financiers like Gina Rinehart, international entities such as US libertarian think tanks, as well as the politicians they fund. The inquiry explicitly called out the National Party for playing a lead role in whipping up local renewable energy scare campaigns and amplifying disingenuous, misleading claims to undermine “social licence”. There messaging is further amplified through News Corp and weaponised via algorithmic distribution on platforms like X and Facebook to generate localised opposition. abc.net.au/news/2026-03-29/sen…

This is all happening against the Climate Crisis backdrop, where farmers are dealing with some of the biggest challenges in their history. From extreme weather, shifting rainfall patterns, severe droughts, and devastating floods, to escalating biodiversity loss, rapidly depleting soil health, and complex pesticide issues. At a time when the whole of regional Australia should be rising up together to meet these monumental challenges, farmers are instead having to expend their vital energy fighting “the climate obstruction network.”

The antidote: Farmers for Climate Action [FFCA]

This is exactly why organisations like Farmers for Climate Action are so vital. They are the frontline defence against this misinformation, division and distraction.

They are an ACTUAL farmer-led movement representing thousands of Australian farmers and regional agricultural leaders. They are a non-partisan network of people who work the land every day, witnessing first hand the reality of shifting rainfall patterns, longer droughts, and unpredictable seasons. Instead of throwing their hands up in the face of these challenges, or allowing themselves to be divided by outside political interests, they are organising, collaborating, and driving deep structural change across rural communities.

Cultivating an On-Farm Revolution

When we talk about reducing global emissions and building a resilient food network, agriculture is a massive piece of the puzzle. The members of FFCA are proving that protecting the planet and maintaining a profitable farm aren’t opposing goals. In fact, they go hand-in-hand. Across the country, they are scaling up brilliant, practical solutions:

• Renewable Energy Hosting: Farmers are integrating wind turbines and solar arrays onto their properties. Sheep graze under solar panels, and cattle wander around turbines, giving farming families a secure, diversified income while feeding clean energy back into the national grid.
• Regenerative Soil Practices: By transitioning to rotational grazing, cover cropping, and reducing tillage, farmers are turning their soil into carbon sinks—trapping greenhouse gases underground while naturally boosting soil health and moisture retention.
• Methane Mitigation: Through smarter livestock management and innovative dietary adjustments, the grazing community is finding ways to steadily drive down methane emissions.

Shattering the “Perception Gap”

Cutting through the noise created by the climate obstruction network requires independent, trusted, country-led voices. Research highlights a phenomenon known as the “perception gap” or the “quiet majority” effect in regional Australia. Data reveals that while roughly 63% of regional Australians personally support the shift to renewable energy, only about 37% of them believe that their neighbours share that same opinion. farmersforclimateaction.org.au…

The support is there; the majority of farmers understand the problem and want action, but “the climate obstruction network” weaponises this gap to make farmers feel isolated, which is why Farmers for Climate Action is so essential. By connecting these voices, FFCA gives the quiet majority the platform and confidence to speak out, proving that regional Australia is in favour of climate action.

By building a collective voice of over 8,000 farmers and tens of thousands of supporters, they are actively engaging with policy makers, publishing peer-reviewed, evidence-based research with scientific bodies, and pushing for systemic net-zero plans. They are making sure that rural communities don’t just survive the transition to a green economy, but actually lead it.

Exposing the distraction campaign

Ultimately, the work of the climate obstruction network is a calculated distraction campaign designed to divide and conquer. By manufacturing a culture war that pits farmer against farmer, they ensure that rural communities spend their energy battling each other rather than uniting against their true, shared adversary: the climate crisis and the industries causing it.

This toxic friction intentionally takes the heat off the real systemic culprits holding agriculture hostage. It distracts communities from the economic squeeze coming from the fossil fuel industry, corporate ag-tech monopolies, high-debt dependency cycles, the devastating toll that petroleum-based chemical farming inflicts on soil health and human bodies and the predatory pricing of major supermarket duopolies.

In their latest report, SHIFTING THE BURDEN: How to cut the industrial emissions which are hurting farmers, without passing the responsibility onto them, Farmers for Climate Action delves deeper into these hidden costs. The data reveals that while coal and gas companies use agricultural land for cheap offsets instead of reducing their own pollution, climate-driven fires, droughts, and soaring insurance costs have already slashed the average Australian farm’s profit by $30,000 a year.

Get Involved: How to Support

A greener, fairer future relies on a resilient and sustainable food system. Here is how you can support this incredible network:

• Learn and Share: Dive into their case studies and educational resources to boost your own climate and agricultural literacy.
• Amplify Their Stories: Follow their updates, engage with regional farming voices on social media, and share the realities of what’s happening on our food production frontlines.
• Join the Network: Whether you are an active primary producer, an agricultural professional, or simply a conscious consumer who cares about where your food comes from, you can join their community and add weight to their advocacy.

The climate crisis is a collective challenge, but seeing the innovation, pragmatism, and sheer determination thriving in our farming communities can give us immense hope. A sustainable future is being seeded right now—and through collective action, farmers are making sure it takes root.

Our Vision

Australia is a global leader on climate solutions, with profitable farms, restored natural capital and resilient regions that underpin long term national food and energy security.

Our Mission

To organise and amplify farmer leadership to drive climate solutions that strengthen farm profitability, restore natural systems and secure the long-term resilience of rural Australia.

Our Theory of Change

If we elevate and organise farmer voices around shared, science-aligned climate goals, then we shift the political and social environment to accelerate the adoption of profitable climate-smart and nature-friendly farming, strengthen regional participation in the clean energy shift and drive ambitious national climate policy.
