Crux
A #poetry thread

i.

Twinkle, twinkle, gilded cross,
I remember what I lost:
a guiding star in sable night,
compass rose aligned with right.

When the risen sun is dimmed
by dawn clouds red, unmoved by wind,
I write a book that’s bound by frost:
twinkle, twinkle, gilded cross.

The time of renewed life is coming soon…
Spring Equinox!
The balancing and the initiation of life.
Resurrection comes on its own.

#poem
After Escher - George Bilgere

Twenty-five summers ago
I wrote a poem about the summer ending,
the shadows lengthening, and the light
gone soft and elegiac
like the end of a love song.
It joined roughly a million poems
written that summer alone
on the same subject, but in Spanish
or Japanese, or Swahili,
always the same thing, same shadows
lengthening, same soft light,
and I ended my poem, twenty five years ago,
by saying that the back of my hand
had begun to look like a dead leaf
or the back of someone else’s hand.

Purgatorio
A #poetry thread

i.

To rest, to sleep,
perchance to dream
in the unending deeps
of stained glass moonbeams.

To feel less than cold stone
and have a skin of granite —
to not fear being alone
on a crowded planet…

I lie on my cool plinth
and bathe in the soft light
of wavering colorful myths
glowing in my soul-night.

3 Kings 1:1

Gothic synagogue
watches, iron cogwheels turning —
new Jeroboam

As chronicled in the books 1 and 2 Kings, Jeroboam was the tyrant who broke off from Judah to found the (Northern) Kingdom of Israel, eventually leading to that kingdom's downfall, then the fall of Judah, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the exile of the Israelites to Babylon.

I, kaching
A #poetry thread

The old market stands
sell their baubles and fruit —
the invisible hand
trading money for loot,

everything’s for sale,
pots of butter and guns,
the return on retail
growing billionaires’ funds.

In this berserk bazaar,
their invisible hands
waste green fields. How bizarre —
now they’re mere empty sands.

Into the black
A #poetry thread

i.

I dig —

— into dark seams of distant hills.
Though frosted green and palest blue,
hill-hearts are black with coal and spill.
I dig deep, chest bare, without a crew.

By mantle's light, with axe and pick,
cold iron that meets the blackened veins,
my forehead damp, my back is slick
with sweat beads formed from what remains.

We're lucky to live in an area where we'll see owls in the wild. This pair we watched from hatching to leaving the nest.

They always take me back back to grade school where one of my books had the #poem The #Owl Critic which has since been favorite.

To the owl out there making all that racket thanks for the memories.

Draco
A #poetry thread

i.

In the great wyrm’s house
with sable drapes
and eaves with spouts
in dragonlike shapes,

I stood to face
the beast within —
where heart had raced
from his rage-winds.

The chamberlain
who greets me there
with pale lips, thin.
In master’s lair

he drags me towards
the waiting wyrm,
whose towering hoard
of skulls that squirm

we met
in the summertime
brokenhearted
and bruised

then i
fell in love with you
all of autumn
and the winter through

now we
see signs of spring
the whole world blooms anew

and i am
the happiest girl
looking forward to a second
summer with you

“some poems sing”
a tribute to the sunset of winter ♡

Minab

A religious conversion
took place in the land
of Xerxes the Persian
amongst desert sands:

The orange second coming of Jesus
in his gilded ballroom
baptizes the schoolgirls, the meek ones,
with lead and steel doom.

An idolatrous God,
this coiffed prince of peace,
is more than mere fraud.
He whets death-angels’ teeth.

Psalm 12 (2026)
A #poetry thread

i.

Oh Lord, if you’re out there,
please help us in haste —
for the false god in his lair
is laying all to waste.

The wickedly faithful
have snared all humankind,
no matter how distasteful
their cultivated lack of a spine.

Their dark David still whispers
with split tongue in their ears
to flatter with false Scriptures
and strum on the lyre of their fears.

No-land
A #poetry thread

i.

In the faraway land of Reality,
I saw a small wooden throne for a king.
He ruled from his perch with vitality
and he never once asked for a thing.

Though it’s said power corrupts, he stayed sane
and ruled wisely to the end of his days.
And when he died, his successor was famed
for walking in her late forebear’s wise ways.

Lakeside
A #poetry thread

i.

The wind whips through tassels of grass
that wave in the sundown’s pale light.
Dark waters shine, reflect the mass
of oak branches that welcome the night.

Across the lake, the sun departs:
its weary disc slips past the dew —
the eye of day winks and embarks —
many distant suns wink into view.
