Mount Rainier National Park (U.S. National Park Service)
Ascending to 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier stands as an icon in the Washington landscape. An active volcano, Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S.A., spawning five major rivers.www.nps.gov
A neat moment that occurred during my mini-vacation this last weekend was spotting this Sea Lion about 6 miles off the shore of Moss Landing in Monterey Bay. This was a fast moving Raft and the ID Brand only appeared in a single frame.
I was able to pass this info along to the wonderful Tony Orr at NOAA for their tracking program and was informed that this Seal Lion was born ~2024 on San Miguel Island.

I was looking through old photos and spotted this one I took at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point in 2019, looking across Fancher Lake to the historic grandstand and agricultural exhibition buildings.
Funding to help make Fancher Lake a nice place to visit was provided by NOAA and the Indiana DNR.
It's disheartening that the current government is defunding NOAA.

"The Guardian US reports that before his Grecian vacation last week, 'Cruz inserted language into the Republicans’ "big beautiful” reconciliation bill, before its signing by Donald Trump on Friday, that eliminates a $150m fund to “accelerate advances and improvements in research, observation systems, modeling, forecasting, assessments, and dissemination of information to the public” around weather forecasting.'”
"Every Republican member of the Texas congressional delegation supports Trump’s devastating cuts to the NWS and its parent agency, NOAA. Texas Senator Ted Cruz single-handedly made the cuts even worse."

"In a repulsive show of cowardice and buck-passing, Texas Governor Greg Abbott went on a bizarre tangent about how asking who’s to blame for the historic flood disaster that has killed at least 111 people was for 'losers' and compared the tragedy to…a football game."

Greg Abbott denigrates flood victims in vile outburst
Today's Action: Demand Congress punish Trump for his outrageous corruption!Mark Charles Heidinger (@advocacy)
"Scott Calvert, John West, Jim Carlton, and Joe Barrett of the Wall Street Journal reported that after a deadly flood in 1987, officials in Kerr County applied for a grant to install a flood warning system, but their application was denied. They considered installing one paid for by the county but decided against it."
"[Greg] Abbott’s defensive answer [when asked who's to blame for the Texas tragedy] reveals the dilemma MAGA Republicans find themselves in after the cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service that came before the Texas disaster."

One hundred and eleven people are dead and more than 160 are still missing in Texas after Friday’s tragic flood.Heather Cox Richardson (Letters from an American)
"Fatalities in billion-dollar storms last year alone were nearly equal to the number of such deaths counted by the federal government in the 20 years between 1980 and 2000.
What is extraordinary is that at such a volatile moment, President Donald Trump’s administration would choose not just to minimize the climate danger —"
"In the United States, which prefers to measure its losses in dollars, the damage from major storms was more than $180 billion last year, nearly 10 times the average annual toll during the 1980s, after accounting for inflation. These storms have now cost Americans nearly $3 trillion. Meanwhile, the number of annual major disasters has grown sevenfold."
"That the United States once again is reeling from familiar but alarming headlines and body counts should not be a surprise by now. According to the World Meteorological Organization, the number of extreme weather disasters has jumped fivefold worldwide over the past 50 years, and the number of deaths has nearly tripled."
"The rapid onset of disruptive climate change — driven by the burning of oil, gasoline and coal — is making disasters like this one more common, more deadly and far more costly to Americans, even as the federal government is running away from the policies and research that might begin to address it."

Texas Flash Flood Is a Preview of Climate Chaos to Come
Climate change is making disasters more common, more deadly and far more costly, even as the federal government is running away from the policies that might begin to protect the nation.ProPublica
"Officials will continue to examine the crisis in Texas but, coming as it did after so many deep cuts to government, it has opened up questions about the public cost of those cuts. Project 2025 called for breaking up and downsizing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, claiming its six main offices—including the National Weather Service—"
"All five living former directors of the NWS warned in May that the cuts '[leave] the nation’s official weather forecasting entity at a significant deficit…just as we head into the busiest time for severe storm predictions like tornadoes and hurricanes…. Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life.'"

At least 80 people are dead and more than 40 are still missing in Central Texas after almost a foot (30 centimeters) of rain caused flash floods overnight on Friday.Heather Cox Richardson (Letters from an American)
"There’s a similar story at the NWS. Former NWS meteorologist Brian Lamarre explained to NPR in May that the NWS had 5,000-6,000 employees 30 years ago. That has gradually whittled down to 4,500 — and then another 550 were cut by DOGE or quit without being replaced. As a result, “for the first time in the history of the National Weather Service, the agency is below 4,000 people.”
"Trump’s attack on forecasting capability is unprecedented and inexcusable. He fired 24,000 employees at NOAA (they were reinstated — then re-fired). The budget for 2026 cuts more than a quarter of the agency’s funding, including all of it for the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, which conducts weather and climate research."

"Staffing data provided by the NWS’s labor union showed the San Angelo forecasting office currently has four vacancies out of 23 positions and San Antonio has six vacancies out of 26."

Was the Hill Country sufficiently warned about Texas flooding?
Water rose fast along the Guadalupe River, causing 68 deaths as of Sunday afternoon. Local officials said they couldn’t have seen it coming.Paul Cobler (The Texas Tribune)
"Today, about 40 percent of the 122 local forecasting offices of the NWS have significant staffing gaps. More than 10 percent of its 4,800 employees have left in recent months—either dismissed, retired, or bought out. Some of the usual predictive measures, such as the deployment of weather balloons and Doppler radar, many of whose experts and technicians have been fired or laid off, are now not available."
This past May, Juliette Kayyem issued the following warning:
"Preparing for emergencies is always difficult; extreme climate events can overwhelm even the best-laid plans. But this challenge has been exacerbated by major staffing cuts imposed by Elon Musk’s and President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency."

This Tornado Mayhem Is a Warning
As hurricane season looms, the effects of DOGE cuts on the U.S. forecasting and alert system are a new menace.Juliette Kayyem (The Atlantic)
"While Texas drowned, he danced.
With people still missing, he golfed.
He gutted the weather service. Slashed NOAA’s budget. As a result, the alerts came too late. 78 people died, including 28 children, with 41 more missing."
~ From Letters from God at Substack, in an email to subscribers
Either drastic cuts to NWS and NOAA budgets play a role — for weal or woe — in how those services function, or they don't. We can't have it both ways.
