Wow.
An excellent post from a blind screen reader user, on how bad accessibility is on Linux (edit: the poster is on Mastodon as well: @fireborn)

It is a fucking shame. And it is pure neglect, as pointed out in the blog post.
Hot take: a new version of open source software should not release before accessibility is fixed. It should be treated as a show stopper, because it actually is for people with a disability.

I hate that: In the late 90s, the #Linux community was proud to be better at #accessibility than commercial operating systems.
Nowadays, the total lack of it, makes Linux an absolute NoGo for institutional and corporate environments.
I believe that the task of fixing that is too much for a community of volunteers.
If states (or the EU) don't fund the necessary developments, it will be the end of Linux and FOSS in many professional settings.

»Linux “just works”—if you can see.
If you’re blind?
You boot into a live image and get nothing.
No speech. No braille. No login prompt feedback. Maybe Orca starts, maybe not.
Maybe you know the shortcut (Alt+Super+S?) but does that even work in this session type?
Is it Wayland? Is it X11? Is the screen reader bound to a key combo that doesn’t exist on your keyboard?
You open the installer?
“Next. Button. Button. Button. Button.” That’s all Orca says.
Ubuntu MATE 12.04 had a working, labeled, navigable installer.
Ubuntu MATE 24.04? It’s garbage.
No headings. No structure. No sense of where you are. Just unlabeled buttons and blank space.
This isn’t a bug.
This is neglect.«
Thanks for writing this article, @fireborn

Ubisoft recently open sourced their colorblindess simulation tool "Chroma" (github.com/ubisoft/Chroma).
Well, here is a Godot Plugin version (Editor + In-Game) to make the world more accessible.
(Note: Even though I licensed my code under MIT, the shader code is taken from the Ubisoft project and thus technically Apache 2.0)

Thanks to @TheBreadmonkey I learned of the existence of @altbot !
Some people have to do a lot of work to get text typed out, and find posting images much quicker - it makes total sense not to suggest someone typing with a sip-puff or other switch to have to also fill in the ALT text.
Also sometimes we're in a hurry. Or we're wanting to report on a fast changing situation. Or whatever other myriad reasons! Looks like altbot can help 😀
Wo gibt’s Barrieren? Was würdet ihr euch wünschen?

Announces each fake bold and fake italic letter individually, including its case and style.
Building accessible applications is not about respect.
It‘s about a goddamn human right and also avoiding technical debt by following standards and convetions. Stop downplaying this. And stop making yourselves look like you care about people. #accessibility #a11y
#Blind users, users that rely heavily on #keyboardNavigation or anyone else with a preference on that matter (please indicate what applies in the comments):
Do you have a preference for or comments on the format of URLs? During user research, we have learned that URLs that are easy to handle are a good thing.
We are currently considering to introduce URLs that do not need more reserved usernames in #Forgejo, such as codeberg.org/-/something/ or codeberg.org/_something/.
Ever seen fancy italics, bold text, or even gothic letters in a slick marketing post on social media?
These platforms do not offer text formatting, so people use weird mathematical characters from the fringes of the Unicode spectrum. And because they aren't really letters screen reader software will announce them as silence or incomprehensible garbage.

Don’t Use Fake Bold or Italic in Social Media
I posted something on Mastodon that uses Unicode math symbols to produce fake bold and fake italic text. I used YayText.com to generate it, but I am not linking it because you I don’t want you to use it.Adrian Roselli
