The internet did not kill reading. It changed the way we read, rewarding fragments over depth, outrage over understanding and speed over thought. Meanwhile, misinformation is free and the truth increasingly sits behind a paywall.
What happens to a society that can no longer finish a long article or follow a complicated argument?

Hello, it is me again (again (again)). I am just some British geek with a daft sense of humour. I'm here for news, memes, and cats. Mostly cats.
This is not my main account. I'm just a strange (not so) little explorer hanging out here from time to time.

Hello everyone!
I'm Hester and I have hobbies. Quite a lot of them. I'm into #writing, #reading, #crochet, #linocut printing, #zine making and at the moment I am mostly #CrossStitching
I'm fairly new to #crossstitch and to mastodom, so I'm trying to find my feet.
This is it for my #introduction so far. If you have questions or any tips about mastodon, I'd love to hear from you!
I hope you have a lovely day.
I'm thrilled to share that my new book #HYPERSCALE is hitting bookstores on October 20. You can preorder it now!
It's an account of how the data center boom is pushing our planet past its breaking point, and of the incredible efforts of people and movements pushing back against the profit-driven interests of Big Tech.

Emma sighed and looked at the sunbeds again. "Damn. I thought I had an appointment with one of them…"
"They won't run away," another guest said as he heard her fake complaint. "We'll make sure it doesn't."
"By lying on it, I bet," Emma said.
"It's the best way," the man said with a straight face.

Is obesity a disease, a social condition, or a failure of willpower?
And if drugs such as Ozempic genuinely work, what exactly are they curing? Bodies, appetites, metabolic disorders, or something much larger and more uncomfortable about the way modern societies live?
Is Ozempic a miracle or a Pandora’s box?

question for book enjoyers out there:
if an artist were to produce some aesthetically very cool ex libris labels to stick inside your books and assert your ownership of them, would you want to buy just one, or maybe a sheet of several at once, for your lil library? asking for a me

This is pretty grim stuff.
“The generational collapse in literacy is measurable, persistent, and likely to get worse. Six weeks into the term, I assigned my rhetoric and writing students a 20-page article. It was the same length I had assigned for five years and the same length I had read without complaint as an undergraduate a decade ago. Not one student finished it. When I asked why, a student answered honestly: It was too long, and she kept losing track of what the paper was about. This was not a remedial class: These were students who had cleared the admissions process and written essays good enough to get them here. Yet a routine academic reading assignment had defeated them.”

I’ve just learned that The Guardian has assembled a list of the 100 “best” English novels, as chosen by experts, that is authors, critics and academics.

Over half of Australia’s bookshops closed within a decade. Should the government help?
“Objects of culture” under “financial pressures”
“Bookshops are the safety vaults for the seeds of our country’s cultural and intellectual life.” Charlotte Wood
"In the past year alone, at least 13 independent bookshops have closed in Australia. Some have operated for decades."
"Fixed book pricing is common in Europe, where books are formally exempted from European Union competition rules, as “objects of culture”. This allows publishers and their distributors to determine the retail price of books."

Book of the Week. 'Depraved: The Story of Dangerous Art' by Daisy Dixon.
A powerful case for meeting the monster’s gaze head‑on. Confront it, cut it open, expose its toxins to daylight.
By exposing the assumptions hidden within a painting, a novel, or a song, we weaken their power far more effectively than censorship ever could. You do not defeat the monster by refusing to look at it, but by facing it, understanding it, and then answering back.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. 👇
I’m only halfway through and I’ve already covered the margins with notes.
It focuses mainly on the US and the Netherlands as the author is Dutch, but one or two European and British politicians could have been lifted straight from its pages, in the way they exploit grief and fear to fan rage and violence.
Hive Mind: Looking for a sci-fi book read in the mid-'60s. Takes place in a moon colony run by a large corporation. Murders are happening & no one can find the murderer. A detective is brought up from Earth to assist. He is blind & has a "birth defect" that allows him to see people as strange, colorful geometric objects, which leads to the answer. Need author & title.

Since I read it (in Jabr, Ferris's book Becoming Earth), I can’t stop thinking about it.
"a single gallon of gasoline represents 100 tonnes of ancient life, roughly equivalent to 20 adult elephants".
I knew it was a lot, but not that much. A full tank is basically a small fossilised world.
In light of the continued enshittification of Youtube, I've finally scrounged together the energy to get files shrunk down and uploaded to a peertube account
@octaviaconamore@vid.northbound.online
It won't include any full streams since there's a 20GB total data limit, but I've uploaded every stand-alone book reading I've recorded
Most of them are still waiting to be transcoded server-side, but the whole YT library will be up in a few hours~
oh, and despite the potato video quality (only 1500 kb/s), the audio quality is a full 320 kb/s
add. if you follow the peertube account from your Fedi account and turn on notifications, you can get a notification every time a new video is uploaded~
